Welcome to the June issue
When planning a new kitchen there is a very

important consideration that we often overlook
– long term flexibility. It may seem obvious
but it’s very easy to live in the moment and not
consider how we will need that room to adapt
to our changing needs. As our lives move on our
priorities change and the key living spaces of
our homes need to reflect and adapt to this –
particularly if your project involves knocking
down walls, hiring architects and re-planning

the whole ground floor. A project of this scale,
rather than a few decorative tweaks, requires
careful thought about all those stages you and
your family have ahead, so consider how the
kitchen or bathroom will work for you in five or
ten years time. It’s always good to examine how
your taste may change as well. Top of the range
appliances can account for a large proportion of
your overall budget. Your favourite thing right now may be the latest florescent
pink model, but will you still want it in ten years? If the answer is yes, then go
for it. If you’re not sure, why not use paints, fabrics and accessories to make a

statement and stick to more neutral elements for the things that are hard to
change. Having said that, don’t be afraid to make some quirky choices of things
that you love to ensure the space is truly your own. To help you make all the
right decisions, talking to top professional kitchen and interior designers and
architects is certainly a worthwhile investment in both time and money. Making
Spaces (see page 72) shows how working with an architect will assist you in
thinking outside of the box when it comes to making major spatial changes
to your home, particularly when striving for the ultimate in open-plan living.
Another big story this month is Truly Classic (see page 100). With so much in
our homes becoming increasingly cutting edge, it should be surprising that this
bastion of the old traditional kitchen remains top of many people’s wish list.
Radiating heat, warmth and comfort, they’re still highly desirable, add value
to your home and are eminently practical. Not only that, while maintaining the
aura of charm of past models, technological advances have made new additions
to the range cooker family more efficient and much, much easier to use.
One question that I’m asked time and time again is exactly what is suitable to
use on a bathroom floor? Our feature on page 124 tackles this topic head on
with an overview of what the best choices are and why. Enjoy the issue.

‘I wanted something welcoming and suited to the chaos of family life’
f aced with a rather ugly 1970s-built bungalow, Sarah and Graeme Boy
decided there was only one thing for it: to get out the bulldozer. ‘The plot
of land was in an ideal location, so we decided to knock down the bungalow
and re-build,’ explains Sarah. ‘Our plan was to build an Edwardian-style house
with box bays in keeping with the style of other properties in the area, and
our overwhelming ambition was not to make it look new.’ Going out of their
way to source bricks and roof tiles with a reclaimed look, their new home in
Hertfordshire began to take shape. ‘It was surprisingly easy – Graeme and I have
very similar taste and a clear idea of what we do and don’t like – so we found the
decisions straightforward,’ says Sarah. So you won’t be surprised to learn that, when
it came to the choice of kitchen company, there was no dithering involved – the couple
headed straight for Smallbone of Devizes in St. Albans. ‘We wanted good quality

quite delicate but it fits in with the

for their five-bedroom Edwardian home
in North London meant Laura and
Gaston Braber had to make several
decisions. One thing, however, was always
a forgone conclusion – the kitchen. ‘We
used to live near the bulthaup showroom in
Clerkenwell and I remember walking by the
showroom and saying that I loved the kitchens,’ explains Laura. ‘Years
later, when we went through this process, it was the first company we
thought about. We wanted something modern and clean-looking that
would go with the rest of the house, while still combining with some of
the existing features, like the fireplaces.’ Working with architect Sebastian
Sandler from Xul Architecture, the couple remodelled their home and
added a rear extension. In the meantime, they approached bulthaup
Mayfair to help them create a design that would make the most of the
extra space. ‘The previous kitchen was quite classic and the space was a
bit fragmented whereas we wanted it to be open-plan,’ says Laura. ‘The
extension needed to include a dining area and work around a central
island but beyond that, we were open to ideas.’ After being shown a
range of colours on smooth, flat-fronted cabinetry, the couple were torn
between grey and white. In the end, they chose a b3 kitchen in white as
it was more affordable but still had all the modern styling they loved.
While the island was intended to function primarily as a workstation,
Laura and Gaston chose to include a wooden breakfast bar with barely
visible frames, so they could eat and enjoy views out over the garden. ‘We
only chose our dining table and chairs much later, after we’d spent time
living in the house, to see what we liked and what we needed,’ she reveals.
As well as beautiful furniture, the couple had a few appliances in mind
that would make their kitchen a pleasurable space in which to cook.
‘I really wanted a steam oven because I cook a lot of healthy food for
our son Mateo, who’s four, and now my newborn daughter Mae,’ says
Laura. ‘We were also debating whether to choose an induction hob or
a gas one, but in the end we went for induction and I find it quite good.’
Luckily, most of the project was straightforward and within six
months the house – and its open-plan kitchen – was finished. ‘It’s hard
for someone for the first time to understand how the different parts of
a project all work together. There’s no time to waste,’ laughs Laura. ‘It
was worth it though. The kitchen goes so well with the rest of the house.
We spend all day now at the dining table or sitting at the breakfast bar

R emembering the day that her kitchen fell apart,

Belinda Kennedy says, ‘Everything started to go
wrong at the same time. The cupboard doors began
to fall off, the drawer runners broke and the oven
stopped working.’ If ever there was a signal that it
was time for a new kitchen, this was it. After moving
into their Edwardian home in South London thirteen years ago, Belinda
and solicitor husband, Jonathan, began a major renovation project. They
added an extension to the side and rear of the house at the same time,
expanding outwards in both directions. ‘The kitchen was the last room of
the entire project and by that stage we just wanted to get the whole thing
finished,’ she recalls. ‘We put in a relatively cheap kitchen so that we’d be
done and dusted as quickly as possible. So this time, we wanted to do the
job properly and create a beautiful kitchen with a more open feel, designed
to suit our family,’ explains Belinda, currently taking a career break to raise
their sons, Eddie, now 12, and David, seven. The first task was to replace the
wooden-framed glass doors with an entire sweep of sliding, pivoting doors
with very slender aluminium frames which can be fully opened in the
summer, providing easy and direct access to the decking and garden beyond.
After admiring a friend’s kitchen, ‘It was five years old and still looked
and worked immaculately’, Belinda contacted Andrew Hall of Woodstock
Furniture. Her brief was for a functional and durable design that would
withstand the wear and tear of busy family life, but also with warmth
and character to make an inviting space for relaxing and entertaining.
‘I wanted a clean, fairly minimal look, but I felt it also needed some
interest, because the room is large with a lot of natural light,’ explains Belinda.
‘Andrew captured that idea immediately with the combination of walnut and
very pale grey. It is restful on the eye, but with subtle points of difference, such
as the curves, that create a sense of flow around the space.’ eKBB

t he six bedroom Edwardian house that Susanne Willumsen and Anthony
Baldwin bought in 2012 hadn’t been touched since the 1950s. It was a case
of gutting it and starting from scratch, presenting a wonderful opportunity
to create a dream home for themselves and their two children Marina, 13, and
Jan-Michael, 11. What most excited Susanne were their plans for the new kitchen,
which would be positioned at the sunny, south-facing rear of the house. By
knocking down a wall between the existing kitchen and a neighbouring reception
room, and extending out into the garden, they planned to create an all purpose
kitchen, dining and sitting room in which the family could gather together in their
various pursuits on a day-to-day basis. The frustrations and limitations of previous kitchens helped
Susanne decide exactly what she wanted. ‘The most important thing to me was to have plenty of
storage as I’d never had enough in our previous home,’ she says. To provide her dream kitchen
Susanne looked to Hampstead Kitchens, suppliers of Schmidt kitchen furniture. ‘They had a quality
product and were just round the corner so I could pop in and out whenever I needed to.’
Tall banks for handleless wall cabinets gave Susanne all the storage she could ever hope for, at
the same time as giving her the contemporary, streamlined look she was after. Her desire to hide
away all clutter was tempered by a wish to create a homely, welcoming space, so she included two
areas of open shelving, one to break up the block of wall cabinets above the sink, the other at the
end of the island. To this end, she also decided upon a dual colour scheme. ‘I toyed with the idea
of having an all white kitchen,’ she says. ‘But in the end I thought it would look too clinical.’
This eclectic approach carries through to the island, where Susanne chose to combine a Corian®
work surface with a stainless steel breakfast bar. ‘I’ve always liked stainless steel but thought it would
look too industrial to use it throughout. I spotted something similar to this on a trip down Wigmore
Street and thought it worked really well.’ Keen to retain a simplicity and purity of line, Susanne chose
not to include a sink in the island. ‘I’ve never really liked having taps sticking out in the middle of the
room,’ she says. In contrast to the kitchen, the
dining and sitting areas display a more rustic,
traditional style. ‘I’ve always liked to mix old and
new,’ says Susanne. She bought the 18th century
Scottish scullery table online from an antiques
dealer in Bath. ‘We love it. It’s super practical as
there are so many marks on it already that it really

pen-plan living has become the ideal. Most of us

aspire to a large, well-lit space linked seamlessly to the
garden where we can gather to cook, dine, entertain and
relax. However, the period homes many of us live in were
built with a very different lifestyle in mind. The kitchen
was definitely not a place for entertaining and is often located
in a dark, pokey room, supplemented by a scullery and separate dining room.
The kitchen extension has become the modern way to deal with this problem.
Open out the rooms at the back of the house, extend into the side passage
and/or to the rear, install as much glazing as possible and, hey presto,
you’ve got yourself a light, bright, spacious contemporary kitchen.
An extension of this sort, however, is a major and costly building project and
needs careful planning. Do it properly and it’s almost guaranteed to add value,
do it badly and it will be a wasted opportunity and money ill spent. Start by
thinking about the possibilities. Most Victorian houses have what’s known as a
side return: a passage running between terraced houses which is often used, if at
all, as a dumping ground for bikes and garden equipment. Typically this space is
a couple of metres wide at most but you’ll be amazed how much difference this
additional space can make to a room, turning an average-sized kitchen into a
spacious cooking and dining zone. Another option is to extend to the rear or,
for maximum space, combine the two with a wrap-around L-shaped extension.

become so much the modern standard that it’s sometimes difficult to think
outside the box. Do you want to keep some separation between areas? Do you
want to incorporate a toilet or utility room? For a project of this size you’ll
require professional help from an architect or design-build company who will

lifestyle and budget. Design-build companies offer a ‘one-stop-shop’ service for

INSIDE OUT
The boundaries between inside and outdoor spaces have
been gradually eroded and now it is often desirable to
achieve as seamless a transition as possible between the
two. In many cases, as in this project, this is achieved by
the continuation of flooring materials from the kitchen out
into the garden. The polished concrete used here lends
itself particularly well to this treatment, being robust
enough to use outside, but with a natural softness that
sits comfortably in interior spaces. Choosing frameless
glass sliding doors will make the boundary between the
two spaces as unobtrusive as possible and will allow an
uninterrupted flow between inside and out when open.

‘There is always the danger of
creating a fish-bowl effect, where

Stevenson. ‘We tend to bring in

I nside this period family house in Notting Hill in London, interior designer Louise Bradley has worked
her magic, considering the natural light, space and proportions and enhancing its best existing features.
Architectural alterations have been made, including the addition of a sizable basement which fully
extends beneath the house and front and rear gardens. The first level of this six-floor home has
been transformed into the master suite, making use of the full width of the house, including a relaxed sitting
area and sleeping space. A spacious bathroom is the main attraction as it includes a freestanding bath, open
rainfall shower behind a feature slate stone wall and dark walnut dressing tables with chrome pivoting mirrors.
When approaching a new project Louise explains, ‘I consider every aspect of the imprint of the space such as
the shape, proportions and light coming through before planning what to do with it. The house benefits from
high ceilings and bay windows and so we used shutters in place of curtains to make the most of the natural light
and to maintain a contemporary feel.’ The sophisticated and well-thought-out design of this room offers a
place to unwind, whether you want to take a long soak in the bath or indulge in an invigorating shower.
Storage plays an integral role and has been planned to ensure a tranquil and ordered space and this has
been carefully considered as Louise describes, ‘Several floor-to-ceiling storage cupboards with mirrored

How did you work with the unique shape of the

bathroom? The client just wanted a beautiful
bathroom that had clear spaces and areas –
hence the freestanding bath nestling in the
curve of the bay window and the beautiful
shower area behind the double basin unit.
How important was maximising space

and light? The master bathroom has an
abundance of natural light from the large
bay window, and I used white shutters to
maximise this whilst also giving the bath
area privacy. I placed a large feature mirror
above the vanity unit as well as mirrored doors
on storage cabinets and an additional wall-
mounted mirror, to both reflect light around
the room and add a sense of space. There are
also subtle floor-level spotlights in the shower
area to ensure this area is bright and well-lit.
What type of mood did you want to create and

how did you decide upon the colour scheme?
I wanted the bathroom to be a tranquil and
calming retreat, and also to fit in with the
colour scheme in the rest of the property,
hence using a neutral colour palette. The
dark slate wall does ‘pop’ when you enter
the room, and I like the contrast between
the dark polished walnut units and the
clean white walls and white marble floor.
How did you choose textures for this room?

I like the polished tiles and dark sleek walnut
as the contrast between the light, white areas
and the darker textured areas really work well.
How do you create a balance between function

and beauty? It is important that a bathroom
has clean lines but also that it doesn’t become
too stark, as the use of stone, marble and
glass can create a space which lacks warmth.
By using details such as the wooden plantation
shutters, the freestanding bath and the
feature mirrors, I soften the look.
How do you find new products and do you like

to incorporate technology into your design?
Both my design team and I are always on the
lookout for innovative new products and like
the challenge of including new technology
where possible, for instance within this

A beautiful bathroom floor is not just a joy to behold, it can

make or break a design scheme. Choosing carefully means
that the floor will be a permanent central feature, able to
withstand as much wear and tear as can be thrown at it,
and also bearing up under any possible future changes of
colour scheme or fittings. Hard floor tiles are often thought
to be the best choice – ranging from real stone, such as
limestone, marble, slate and granite, to ceramic and porcelain versions of real
stone. Cement and concrete can be treated and polished to look like real stone,
and is a good choice for anyone wanting a seam-free, contemporary and
perhaps slightly industrial look. The fashion for freestanding baths and basins
means that fittings are often standing away from walls, with the flooring visible
all around the room – and often beneath the freestanding bath as well. In these
cases, a skirting or border in the same material as the flooring is an intelligent
design choice, and creates a neat and highly presentable outline to the room.
Louisa Morgan, of Mandarin Stone, highly recommends using natural stone
and porcelain in the bathroom. ‘Visually, it’s the most practical and pleasing.
Options in terms of shade, texture and format are endless and any look can be
achieved according to your requirements. It’s important to remember that all
natural stone is porous to varying degrees so wherever it’s used we recommend
sealing to improve stain resistance. In wet areas such as showers or wet rooms,
‘tanking’ (normally with a waterproof membrane) is always essential for both
stone and porcelain’. Rebecca Cherrington, Head of Projects at Lapicida,
when discussing the use of marble for flooring, says ‘Always have marble
professionally laid and sealed. Professional installers will advise on any
sub-floor preparation needed, and will finish it with a durable sealant’.
If a patterned floor is your top choice, consider some of the small,
intense patterns supplied by, amongst others, Fired Earth and British
Ceramic Tile. Jayne Adamson, Senior Product Manager at British Ceramic
Tile, points out ‘Some patterned floor tiles require meticulous planning and
measuring up, but there are many designs now that feature just one uniform

RIGID VINYL Available in tile and plank form, and designed

to look like real stone, wood, mosaic, or abstract colours and
patterns. Extremely hardwearing and needing no specialist
treatments. A good selection of cleaners are available.
CUSHIONED VINYL Available in sheet form, so can be

installed with no seams or joins. Comfortable underfoot, and
for children’s bathrooms, there are specialist non-slip options.
CONCRETE & CEMENT Currently popular to achieve

an edgy urban look, concrete and cement can be tinted
and coloured to provide sleek and unusual finishes, as
well as the more industrial greys and neutrals.
