What is animal? For many people, an animal has four legs, a head at the front and a tail at the
back. There are, in fact, many different kinds of animals. Some are so small that you cannot see with
naked eyes. Some have no head, no mouth, no legs. Some live in the sea. Some can fly. They come in
thousands of different shapes, sizes, and colours.
Here is a page from a biology textbook which shows how different animals can be.
Insects. One of the largest groups of animals is the insect group. These animals have six legs
and three parts of their bodies. Many insects cause humans problems. Some carry disease. Others
cause a problem because they eat food that farmers grow. But bees and butterflies help flowers and
fruit to grow.
Birds. Like many of the insects, birds have wings and can fly. There are many different types
of birds. Some eat fish and live near rivers. Others like to live in town in groups and eat mostly
insects. And there are birds which like to live alone high in the mountain. These birds, like the
mountain eagle, eat meat with their strong sharp beaks. They also have sharp claws on their feet for
hunting and killing.
Fish and Reptile. Fish and reptiles are cold blooded animals. Fish live in the sea, but reptiles
usually live on the land. Reptiles are probably the least popular animals.
They include the long snakes that many people are afraid of. However, some people keep snakes in
their homes as pets.

Dick was a clever boy, but his parents were poor, so he had to work in his spare time and during
his holidays to pay his education. In spite of this, he managed to get to the university, but it was so
expensive to study there that during the holidays he found it necessary to get two jobs at the same
time, so as to earn enough money to pay for this study.
One summer he managed to get a job in a butcher’s shop during the day-time and another in a
hospital at night. In the shop, he learned to cut meat up quite nicely, so the butcher often left him to do
all serving while he went into a room behind the shop to do the accounts. In the hospital, on the other
hand, he was, of course, allowed to do only the simplest jobs, like helping to lift people and to carry
them from one part to the hospital to another. Both at the butcher shop and at the hospital Dick had to
wear white clothes.
One evening at the hospital, Dick had to help to carry a woman from her bed to the place where
she was to have an operation. The woman was already feeling frightened at the thought of the
operation before he came to get her, but when she saw Dick, that finished her. “No! No! She cried.
Not my butcher! I would not be operated on by butcher” and fainted away.

Long, long time ago there lived two brothers. They had completely different characters. The big
brother was very stingy and greedy. He never shared his wealth with poor people. The little
brother was exactly the opposite. He was generous and kind to poor people. He even had no
money left because he had shared it with the poor.
One day the generous brother was sitting in his garden when suddenly a little bird fell on his
lap. It was wounded. He took care of it, fed it, and put it in a nice cage. After the bird was health,
the generous brother let it fly. After some time the bird returned to him and gave him a
watermelon seed.
The generous brother, then, planted the seed and watered it until it grew into a good
watermelon plant. However, the plant was very strange. It had only one fruit; a big and heavy one.
When the watermelon was ripe enough, the generous brother picked it and cut it into two. How
surprised he was. The watermelon was full of gold.

SMOKE AND FOG
Air pollution from human activities has created many problems for us. Pollution comes from
many sources. The exhaust smoke from cars and trucks is one cause of pollution. Another cause is
the smoke that comes from factories.
One of the main sources of pollution is the energy that we use. Coal, oil, and gas are used to
produce electricity. The burning of the fuel causes extensive pollution. They not only produce smoke
but also poisonous gases.
Some big cities are very polluted. There is white smoke and fog called smog covering the
whole city. The health of people is affected by this smog. Beside people, plants are also affected.
The wind carries the smoke and the gases into the countryside. There, they affect the farms and the
lakes and rivers. Plants and trees are destroyed and fish in the lakes die.
Governments are doing their best to reduce air pollution. The atmosphere today is much better than
it was fifty years ago. But everyone must make an effort to try to reduce pollution further. In many
places today, cars are not allowed in the centre of the city. People are encouraged to use bicycles or
to travel by public transport.

MY LOVELY HOME
My house is only a five minute-walk from school.
It is not very big, but cozy and quiet. This is the place where we can relax and find our own
space. In our home, we really enjoy our relaxing time from the pressure of school and work.
It has a nice and warm living room. There is a beautiful painting of scenery hanging on the
wall. My father is a keen gardener. He puts some pots of indoor plants near the door. In a low
cabinet, you will see the trophies, pictures of my family, small toys and some books.
I am lucky to have a room to myself. I paint the wall olive green. It’s my favourite color. There
is a desk. I do my homework there. I also put a portable radio-tape there.
The kitchen is my mother’s domain. My mother keeps it clean all day. There is a blue wall
cabinet in it. It harmonizes with the grey wall tiles.
However, only few will give my home a second glance. Still we are very proud of it. It may not
