“When we first started talking about a new
home, I happened to be walking by the Lake
Country Log Home office in Sicamous,”
recalls the homeowner, who invited Jamie
Gervais down to their site. A plan soon de-
veloped between the contractor, Cam Bos,
the designer, Alana Humphreys, and Jamie
Gervais who were intrigued by the concept
of blending a post and beam log structure
with contemporary interiors. “If his office
wasn’t in Sicamous, I would probably still be
in my old cabin.”

Knowing they desired something different,

the homeowner’s vision was to have a mod-
ern interior within a home that would still
complement the area with its rustic influ-
ences enhancing both styles. “We wanted a
family home that would be very comfort-
able for my wife and I, plus our family visits
a few times a year and it fills up,” they add.
With lots of space to accommodate every-

“The client’s property is located on the lake

and is designed as a family vacation home
although it would function beautifully as
a primary residence as well,” states Jamie
Gervais of Lake Country Log Homes,
whose family has been in business for nearly
30 years. “We were able to create the vision
the clients had, capturing the full aspect of
a vacation lake house with grand views and
space for a large extended family within
approximately 7,500 square feet, includ-
ing the boat house in the basement and
attached garage.”

Using sustainable logs and building materi-

als in the construction of the home, Ger-
vais explains, “Western Red cedar logs have
a very high thermal mass and the frame was
designed between the log post and beams
to accommodate additional insulation with-
in the framed walls, ensuring maximum
energy efficiency.”

Located on the lake with its natural shore-

line and trees, they used large diameter, char-

surrounding landscape. “The luxury
of the handcrafted cedar logs blend-
ing with contemporary finishes and
décorating really showcase the advan-
tages of post and beam homes, as you
have a lot of flexibility with the finishes
and design,” admits Gervais.

“I had worked with the clients previ-

ously and they contacted me initially
to help with their kitchen design. That
escalated into something much more
comprehensive, which ultimately in-
cluded the floor plan layout design,
interior finishes, furnishings, and
décor,” shares designer Alana Hum-
phreys, owner of Alana Humphreys
Interior Design.

Intended as a vacation property, the

clients wanted to maximize their
vacation time and opted for mod-
ern elements from a cleaning, easy
maintenance, and functional stand-
point, while sustaining wow factor
without the complications or care of
log wall surfaces. “While every room
does showcase log beam accents, they
are not intended to overwhelm the
space,” says Humphreys. “The effect
is unique and was purposefully curated
to accommodate a desire for encom-
passing natural beauty.”

Offering a décor palette that is com-

fortable and stylish, it was conceived
for entertainment and intended
for grandchildren, extended family,
and friends given the attractions of
Mara Lake. Displaying an open and
spacious layout, the vacation prop-
erty has five bedrooms and multiple
amenities for in-home entertainment.

“The décor features a blend of hard

Mountain House Furniture
Embracing the sleek, European styles that enliven your exterior
living space with comfort and décor continuity, Mountain House
Furniture offers quality outdoor furniture for those seeking value
without compromise.

For over 15 years their design team has proven that sophisticated
settings need not be the sole realm of southern climes. Creating
chic furniture that can withstand extreme temperatures with
stylish ease, Mountain House combines the best of both worlds—
durable outdoor furniture that is beautifully designed.

Not only made to last, it is also made to enjoy with light frames
and chairs that are always comfortable with or without cushions.
Requiring minimal maintenance, its fiber coating makes it soft so
that even the most delicate clothes remain intact.

“We offer our own Mountain House line that we design and
manufacture with custom cushions made from a wide range of
Sunbrella fabrics, or we can work with the designer’s fabric for a
custom, complementary look,” shares Sandra Howell on their flexible
design sensibility that allows them to accommodate any décor.

Focusing on a clean, European aesthetic, the furniture displays

its own unique character that can function as beautifully inside
the home as it performs on the patio or terrace. The collection
is comprised of different styles from Colonial, exotic, and cozy
to minimalist cool and chic. Their talented designers combine a
high-tech fiber with other premium quality materials that include
stainless steel, aluminum, teak, and wicker weaves to create well-
balanced proportions and modern shapes.

“People now are more drawn to sectionals as they are seeking

comfort throughout the day versus the limitation of dining units,”
cites Howell. Low slung fire tables accent these seating areas,
extending seasonal comfort. Bar height tables are also popular as
their added height eliminates the scenic obstruction of balcony
railings. “As more modern design evolves Alberta architecture,
these preferences can be reflected in the patio furniture,”
continues Howell. “We make what people want and ensure that it
is done well. Plus, in five or ten years, it will still look great.”

Diamond Valley Custom Homes
For over a decade, Diamond Valley Custom Homes has been enriching
Calgary and the Foothills area, specializing in acreage development.
“My brother and I pride ourselves in our commitment and
understanding of our client’s needs throughout the build to ensure total
customer satisfaction,” admits Raham McIlroy. “Mike has extensive
metal fabrication experience and I have the building background, and
together we focus on projects that are out of the ordinary.”

An outdoor kitchen of pure custom appeal on an acreage south of

Calgary, was constructed to fit the appliances perfectly. “They wanted
an outdoor space—an oasis if you will—to cook and relax and to be
with friends and family,” shares McIlroy. Also desiring a space that
would extend the limited warm months of summer, it was designed
and built to comfortably accommodate three-season comfort.

Hosting in-floor heating as well as a snowmelt system with drainage

beneath the Kayu Batu floor deck, six radiant heaters that heat the
objects around them, not the air, combined with oversized motorized
screens on all three open sides of the kitchen for ultimate function,
comfort, and unobstructed views.

Featuring a tongue-and-groove cedar roof with beams fashioned from

reclaimed fir from a helicopter hangar in Lethbridge, the U-shaped
kitchen by Danver Stainless Outdoor Kitchens, hosts Dekton quartz
countertops and stainless steel, powder-coated cabinets with soft close
function. Further housing a smoker, barbeque, and an artesian style
pizza oven, it also hosts a cooktop and fridge/freezer drawers. An
icemaker, outdoor dishwasher, and an oversized custom hood fan
raises the bar for full service amenities.

Capturing over 2,000 square feet of luxurious surfaces, the outdoor

kitchen is actually pie-shaped with a front curved façade that displays
copper fascia with hidden gutters. LED pot lights are programmed to
produce select ambience or “scenes” via touchscreen control through
the home’s automation system.

Thrilled with the end result, homeowners enjoyed working with

DVC Homes and their crews. “They are very knowledgeable. We had
numerous ideas before going with DVC Homes and their ideas fit our
needs better than anyone else.”

“It was a dream project with amicable clients, a good budget, and a
true desire for innovation, luxury, and comfort,” admits McIlroy.

“Melcor has done a tremendous job with their amenities,” notes

Kevin Birkholz of Birkholz Homes. “With trails that parallel the
ravine, play areas for children, and work out areas for adults, it’s
beauty and features are a real asset to Jagare Ridge.” Also keen on
the architectural codes that promote authenticity in styles, Birk-
holz adds, “Your exterior elevation has to follow a style and as a
result the value is that no two homes are alike—each has it own
unique appearance and own elements and that creates a dynamic
streetscape.”

“We have strongly encouraged that all architectural styles retain

their true form, while integrating modern materials and construc-
tion strategies,” shares Banks, who cites their Larch Park commu-
nity, which focused on high valued architecture and low impact
development, as one of the motivators for Jagare Ridge.

With this most recent stage, Jagare Ridge offers more home types
to fit any budget. “It’s about price point and quality. Our new
multi-family development and smaller lots have really opened
Jagare Ridge up to a wider demographic, without forfeiting the
quality and stylish architecture that is renowned in the community,”
notes Banks. The ambience of Jagare Ridge feels far removed
from the hustle and bustle of the city, yet everything one would
need is nearby. Offering quick and easy access to Anthony Henday
Drive and Currents of Windermere, South Edmonton Common,
Ellerslie Road, and the shops of 23rd Avenue just minutes away,
there is no shortage of shopping, dining, services, and entertain-
ment options available. “It feels like an inner-city neighborhood,
but is secluded from the sprawl of urban development.”

“People appreciate the proximity to the golf course and without a

doubt, Jagare Ridge Golf Course is the community’s star amenity,”
affirms Banks of a course that winds around creeks, cliffs, hills,
and mature forest to create breathtaking vistas for its residents
and a truly memorable golf experience.

allotted 100 acres will eventually host 400-500
homes and 20 businesses over the next eight

Royal Building Products
For almost fifty years, Royal Building Products has been enhancing
residential exteriors nationwide with durable and eye-catching
options that Canadians and their climate rely upon. Introducing two
new products for style conscious buyers, Celect Cellular Composite
Siding and Zuri Decking both combine great wood aesthetics with
the benefits of value and low maintenance.

A premium siding that is available in horizontal, vertical plank, and

shake shingle, Celect is a pre-painted option that comes in fifteen
popular colours. Featuring an interlocking joint system that keeps
moisture out and almost eliminates seams, it not only looks authentic
but will never warp, buckle, or shift like wood. “All it needs is an
occasional spray wash. It looks as handsome as natural wood and is
priced competitively with fibre cement and wood products,” admits
Vice-President of Product Development, Steve Booz.

In additional to being completely re-usable and 100% recyclable,

Celect offers an R-value that is twice the thermal value of any
other comparable material in the market, making it warmer in the
winter and cooler in the summer. “With Celect you don’t need to
worry about mold, deterioration, or scrubbing. You can also forget
about painting and caulking with the added benefit of a 25-year
warranty,” he says of Celect that offers coordinating or contrasting
trim colours, allowing the homeowner the ability to create their own
unique design.

Equally innovative and aesthetically pleasing, Zuri Decking looks like

hardwood flooring for outdoor living areas. “It’s an actual photo
print of real wood that we apply to the deck board and protect it
with an acrylic cap,” describes Steve Booz. Available in five colours
it offers lasting durability in terms of colour retention and is scratch
and stain resistant. Also easily maintained with a simple power wash,
it shares a 25-year warranty and is priced below cedar and exotic
wood options.

“Homeowners are steadily spending more on their outdoor living

spaces and people want the style and cohesive finishes that reflect
their décors with the added benefit of low maintenance,” admits Steve
Booz. Now with Zuri and Celect, which are very complementary
products, homeowners can extend their outdoor living spaces with
products rich in design, function, and lasting beauty.

Building the very best homes for some of
the world’s most discerning people on the
west coast, Triple Bar Construction sees
the process from the client’s perspective.
“They had camped in Tofino for years and
were ready to build their vacation home,”
recalls Project Manager of Triple Bar
Construction, Brad Johnson. “They knew
what it meant to belong to that commu-
nity and with the help of Scott & Scott
Architecture in Vancouver, designed a
very minimalist home with an organic
feel that would blend well with its setting.
We were careful to save many trees in the
build, alot more than would be typically
spared during construction.”

shares Johnson.

A two-story home with a separate inde-

pendent suite, the half-acre lot is seclud-
ed and embraces its own intimacy with
nature. An extensive stairway was also built
above the rain forest, leading to a hot tub
with sitting areas. “The lot is 300 feet deep
and the back 200 feet is a conservation
area,” shares the homeowner. “We could
not build a permanent structure, but we
could construct walkways and platforms
throughout for low-impact living that
would still make the backyard usable and
fun,” he adds of a home that could be best
experienced from the outside.

Working with the architect, the home-

owners appreciated their use of common
materials to create an honest aesthetic.
“While others rely on expensive finishes,
I personally prefer a design that does a
lot with a little, which worked well with-
in our budget,” admits the homeowner,
who recognized Triple Bar Construction
for their body of work in Tofino and their
excellent reputation as a builder of merit.

Durabuilt Windows & Doors
Committed to ensuring that their product meets your needs, Durabuilt
Windows & Doors Calgary Design Gallery hosts a fresh perspective on style
and innovation. “Everything we do is centered on creating an unforgettable
customer experience. We are committed to providing innovative products
and exceptional service to both our renovators and new home builders,”
shares Branch Manager, Rob Rennie, who agrees that it is the customer that
shapes what they provide.

For instance, their multiple colour options for the interior of the window
addresses more cohesive décors with selections that extend to the exterior.
“In the past white and beige were the only interior colours available. Now
we offer laminated black and stained-grade wood aesthetics,” says Rennie.

With their new location at 2105, 6027-79th Ave SE, their Design Gallery
features 3,000 square feet of engaging displays with workspaces and an
additional 7,000 square feet of offices and warehouse space. “The Design
Gallery is impressive in how it displays the products within an open and
airy décor,” admits Rennie of their showroom that includes select areas for
accessories that features grills, glass, and hardware options with a coffee bar.
“It was designed for comfort and ease of selection.”

Within their wide range of high quality products, the Alpha sliding window
features a monoframe design, on-trend exterior colours, and triple-pane
glazing. “The Alpha’s monoframe design makes it more air and water tight,
which improves energy efficiency, comfort, and customer peace of mind,”
cites Rennie.

Vivacé Eurostyle windows and doors afford the ability to design large
window walls—much larger than conventional windows alongside unique
features with a tilt-and-turn function for windows and tilt-and-slide patio
doors. Luxurious vinyl laminate finishes can applied on the interior or
exterior window, offering a more durable and long lasting finish versus
painted metal, and is available in eight colours and three woodgrain finishes.

Durabuilt recently introduced a stainable Fir vinyl laminate for wood

without the worry, and a black interior laminate to capture current design
trends. “The black laminate is very popular in modern décors,” observes
Rennie. “With current trends we are seeing more glass, energy efficiency
with an emphasis on triple versus dual pane windows, and of course, colour
options. Focus on front entries for making a great first impression are being
widely populated with more contemporary styles that offer clean lines and
geometric designs, providing the distinctive curb appeal that homeowners
want,” concludes Rennie.

and the Trans-Canada Highway can take you downtown or out of
town swiftly and easily. Grocery stores, shopping malls, ski hills, and
sports complexes are all close by with schools and medical centres
equally accessible. “The LRT is only five minutes away, which is great
for the entire family, and being on the west side of the city brings
one that much closer to the recreation activities that the Rocky’s
have to offer,” cites Jones.

“Our original concept has really come to life the way we envisioned,”
adds Jones of Watermark that is located on the boundary of Calgary
and Rocky View County. ‘There are no other communities this close
to Calgary with fully serviced lots of this size.”

“The difference between what you get here and in the inner city with
its narrow frontages and neighbors four feet away is astounding,”
admits Jones. “Our smallest lots are eighty feet wide with a minimal
separation of 25 feet between homes that are set back nine meters
from the street. It creates a terrific streetscape with extraordinary
landscaping potential and a great open feel.”

Comprised of families, it is often said that it evokes a wistful nostalgia

driven by its close sense of community. “A friend of mine who re-
cently moved here told me that within a couple of weeks their daugh-
ter had been invited to two or three birthday parties. We have so
much parkland plus the pavilion and that translates into many oppor-
tunities to get out and about and meet your neighbors,” shares Jones,
adding that the community hosts several functions each year includ-
ing Stampede events, Easter egg hunts, and movie night in the park.

Featuring a total of 5 kilometers of paved pathways at build out and

Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park next door, the City of Calgary is
further developing Haskayne Park, which will connect to Glenbow,
allowing residents to walk or bike to the provincial park and even
Cochrane.

With architectural codes that afford a variety of home styles and

plenty of creativity, they conform to quality standards that ensure
value, authenticity, and variety within the community.

“Ultimately, the main draw for many is the lot sizes. We have the first
three phases completed and people can see the vision of Watermark
and its millions of dollars of amenities that they can enjoy now,”
admits Jones. “It removes all the guess work.”

Growing up is all about running around and exploring. And Watermark at Bearspaw’s 46 acres of
parkland, three playgrounds and many other outdoor amenities offer plenty of opportunities. Plus,
with average lot sizes of 1/4 to 1 acre in size (our smallest lots are almost twice as big as an inner-city
estate lot), there are countless adventures to be had in your own backyard. When it comes to giving your
family more space to experience and grow, bigger is certainly better. WatermarkAtBearspaw.com
