(2006) The Essential Guide to Teaching. Harlow: Pearson Education. ‘Activity 10.9 Evaluating paraphrased text Paraphrase 1 is the better example. The author has made a better attempt at finding synonyms, changing the structure of the sentences, retaining meaning and not copying text. Activity 10.10 Paraphrasing text There is no one correct version of these texts. Make sure you have referenced the source, you have not copied any text (unless technical terms are included), you have kept the meaning and the length the same as the original and you have written the paraphrase in your own style. The following are suggestions only: Text1 ‘One study compared results between children adopted from an at-risk background and those ‘who had retured home or were fostered. (Manin etal, 2007) Aclivity 15.5 Improve this referencing 41 In the first reference the writer has left out the initials of the two authors and has: forgotten to include the year of publication (2000). 2 In the second reference the writer has spelt the name of the author incorrectly (Gilman, not Giman). They have given the names of the editors of the book the chapter comes from, but have left out all other details. It is not enough to put, as this writer has, ‘see above for details’. The information must be given in full. Sn the third reference the writer has reversed the order of the surnames of the two authors. This cannot be done, the details must match exactly. 4 The writer has forgotten to include one of the references (Kroll and Taylor, 2000).
