Indefinite article: a/an


We use a with nouns starting with a consonant sound and we use an with nouns starting with a vowel sound.
We use a/an:

   with general descriptions:


A soccer player is a person who plays soccer.
An apple is a type of fruit.

   with a person’s job:

   with a person’s character or status:

Definitive article: the


We use the definitive article to refer to specific things. We use it for all genders in singular and plural.
We use the:

   with unique objects and known references

The moon circles around the earth. (There is only one moon)
The tower of London is very old. (When the noun comes before the name)

   with geographical features

Names of countries in plural: The United States, The United Kingdom.


Names of mountain ranges, region: The Highlands, The Alps, The Middle East.
Groups of islands: The Bahamas, The British Isles, The Canaries
Proper names, oceans, seas, rivers, deserts: The Statue of Liberty, The Atlantic (ocean), he Mediterranean
