Create a Nursery You Love
One of my favorite things about Redwood Shores is that it’s home
to many expectant parents and growing families. It’s no surprise
that I get asked a lot of questions about decorating a nursery, so I
thought I’d share my tips this month. Here are a few ideas on how
to approach designing a space both you and your baby will love.
1. Safety first.
Safety is the most important thing to consider when designing a
nursery. Important safety considerations include furniture
placement (cribs shouldn’t be under windows, for example) and
non-toxic paint and material choices. Exercise caution when buying
or accepting used items, as they may not meet current safety
standards. is advice just scratches the surface—I recommend you
look for guides on child-proofing for a more comprehensive list.
2. Choose the right furniture.
A crib, dresser, changing table, and comfy chair are the basic pieces
you could use. Also consider extras—a bookshelf, cabinets to store
diapers and supplies, or a soft rug for tummy time and play time
as your child grows. Begin by measuring the room to figure out Be sure to incorporate some décor that you like in the nursery—you’ll
what will fit. Next, decide what size furniture you should buy and be in this room a lot! Photo courtesy of Room & Board.
where you’ll place each piece in the room. If you have a small space,
you could consider multi-functional pieces such as a
dresser/changing table combo. You can also buy furniture that will
grow with your child, like a crib that turns into a toddler bed.
Don’t forget to incorporate a night light or other dim lighting for
late night feedings and changings.
3. now for the fun part—what inspires you?
You’re going to spend a lot of time in this room, so decorate it the
way you like! ere are many fun baby themes you can choose
from such as outer space or safari animals. For a style that can grow
with your child, play with richer colors, textures, or patterns such
as stripes or geometrics. Some families choose to create a gender
neutral space that goes beyond traditional baby colors and
furniture. Create an accent wall with paint, fun wallpaper, or large
wall decals to give your room a focal point.
Most importantly, enjoy the process. Use the act of decorating
as a time filled with reflection, love, and excitement as you
anticipate the arrival of the newest member of your family.
