REMOVING OF PARTS OR COMPONENTS FROM MACHINERY

1. OBJECTIVE

To provide a Standard Operating Procedure for engineering staff to ensure that any parts that are
removed from one machine for another is logged on a standard document.

2. SCOPE

This Standard Operating Procedure is applicable to all MCC sites, operations, employees and sub-
contractors.

3. RESPONSIBILITY

The Project Manager, Engineering Manager, Engineering Foremen, Engineering Supervisors,


Artisans, Servicemen, Production Foreman and Production Supervisor.

4. DEFINITIONS

Whenever operational requirements dictates a need for spare parts or components and the only
solution to the existing problem is to strip the required parts or components from another
machine.

5. ACTIVITIES

Before stripping a machine of any part or component the responsible artisan will obtain written
permission / justification from the Plant Manager instructing him to remove only the required part
(s) / component(s). This permission shall be granted only upon proof (i.e. requisition number) that

these items have been ordered and that neither the OEM nor any other source is able to supply
immediately ex stock.

5.1 The correct documentation must be submitted:

 Parts robbing authority form,


 Requisition and order number as proof that replacement parts have been ordered.

5.2 Once the correct documentation has been signed off and approval has been obtained, the
artisan must ensure that the donor machine has been parked in the correct parking bay
and that it will not pose a safety hazard or obstruction to normal operations.

5.3 Only after all the proper documentation has been submitted and all safety requirements
have been met, the artisan may remove the required components.

5.4 After removal, close and secure all related openings, i.e. pipes, hoses, component
mounting places, etc. with proper coverings. Do not operate signage must be placed in
Cab of machine that has been robbed with robbing authority paperwork.

5.5 When the new components arrives, it must be fitted immediately to the donor machine in
order to avoid creating an unnecessary backlog of work.

5.5 The responsible Foreman to commission and verify that parts are refitted to standard.

6. HAZARDS IDENTIFIED

6.1 Refer to SOP‘s for lifting and slinging of heavy goods.


6.2 Slippery surfaces.
6.3 High pressure / high temperature hydraulic fluids leaking from pin-hole punctures may lead
to fluid injection and / or burns.

6.4 Stored energy.


6.5 Failure / improper use of PPE.
6.6 Incorrect use of tools, lifting equipment or rigging methods.

6.7 Uneven floors or working areas.


6.8 Inadequate illumination.
6.9 Fluid spillage pollution.
6.10 Sharp edges on equipment, tools or pipes and frayed hoses.
6.11 Improper body positioning leading to injuries and / or falls. etc.

7. MONITORING AND MEASUREMENT

This procedure will be reviewed every second year or as is required.
