Title : FAST DRAW: A TECHNIQUE IN IMPROVING


MATH WORD PROBLEM SKILL

This proposed innovation titled Fast Draw: A Technique

in Improving Math Word Problem Skill utilizes the process

mnemonics FAST DRAW as a teaching strategy in word problem

solving. To solve word problems successfully, pupils must not

only be able to perform the necessary computations, but must

also understand the questions that are being asked, identify

the relevant information within the problem, and determine

the specific operations needed to solve the problem. In this

intervention, pupils will learn an 8-step strategy for

solving math word problems, along with self-regulation

procedures to assist them in completing the strategy

successfully.

The first part (FAST) cues pupils through the steps to

follow to solve word problems effectively. The second part

(DRAW) cues pupils through the steps to follow to draw


pictures to solve the problem. This strategy can be

implemented individually, in small groups, or whole group.

It can be facilitated by a teacher, paraprofessional or adult

volunteer.

Furthermore, this study aims at exploring the effects of

the Fast Draw learning strategy on academic achievement and

attitudes towards mathematics in elementary third grade

mathematics in Canjumadal Elementary School. Specifically,

this study aims to improve math words problem skills of

elementary third grade mathematics in Canjumadal Elementary

School; determine whether there is significant difference

between treatment variable and controlled using various

activities in the posttest scores of the “Mathematics

Aptitude Scale” in favor of the treatment group; and finally

determine whether there is significant difference between

treatment variable and controlled using various activities in

the posttest scores of the “Mathematics Aptitude Scale” in

favor of the controlled group.
