CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION
A. Background of the Study

Water Lilies are very useful for the lives of various aquatic animals like fishes as it serves

as a food, provide shade for the fishes, and can keep temperatures from getting too high in the

pond for the fishes to be alive, as defined by www.ehow.com. These plants are useful yet they can

be a disaster to water bodies like canals and freshwater rivers because they may be a hindrance to

water transport because theses water bodies can become impassable as they clog up with densely

intertwined carpets of the weeds that may cause flash floods.

Water Lily plant is also a contributor on the victims of malaria and dengue as it may serve

as a breeding grounds for mosquitoes and cemeteries for living organisms because of the still,

anaerobic water said by jacintoandlirioph.weebly.com. Malaria, dengue, and water borne parasites

and other water borne diseases increase as the water hyacinths provide habitats for mosquitoes.

Also, they reduced biodiversity by out competing other aquatic plants that may cause to an

imbalance in the micro‐ecosystem resulting in reduced flora and the fauna that depend on it.

Localized water quality also deteriorates which may be harmful to people who rely on the

waterway for drinking water.

According to www.timesofmalta.com, water lilies plays a massive part in flashfloods in

the Philippines. More than half a million people in the southern Philippines have been affected by

flooding after water lilies clogged the country's second longest river.

This group thought of making those negative effects into positive ones by producing

machine called “Stalk Braider Machine” that is capable in making water lilies into useful and
durable ropes. By this, water lilies may be lessen, reduce the burden to the people, and may invite

the people to also recycle water lilies. This may also offer a source of income in the near future by

manufacturing efficient and eco-friendly ropes with the use of Stalk Braider Machine.

B. Statement of the Problem

This research study aims to find the answer to the question: “Is the stalk braider machine

effective as machine in producing alternative ropes made up of water lily stalk?

Specifically, it sought to answer the following:

1. Is there any significance difference among the treatments in terms of:

a. Adaptabilitym (what do you mean)

b. accessibility

c. maintenance ability

d. performance results

2. Is there any significant change in use of stack braider machine in terms of:

a. rope capacity

b. tensile strength

3. Is the stack braider machine performance acceptable in producing water lily ropes in

terms of:

a. Accountability (what do you mean)

b. durability
C. Objectives of the Study

The primary objective of the study is to produce a wide range of water lily rope using the

stalk braider machine. It provides a solid foundation in fundamentals of braiding design, process,

and especially machinery. Also, it covers the patterning of the braided rope product which is the

water lily rope and the design of the tubular braids.

D. Significance of the Study

The success of this study may give benefits to the following:

1. Community

It may benefit the citizens to have a cleaner environment especially rivers that may affect

them during calamities. It can also make the water activities possible by lessening the amount of

water lilies. Also, they will be benefited by conserving their time in making ropes with the use of

Stalk Braider Machine.

2. Farmers

This study may benefit them to have a cheaper rope than the commercial ones and to help

them to have less expenses than before.

4. Present Researchers

It helps the researchers to know how to use Earth's treasure properly and conveniently.

5. Future Researchers

This study may serve as a basis for future researchers for them to make a better machine in

making alternative ropes.

1.6 Scope and Delimitation

The research study entitled “Effectiveness of Stalk Braider Machine in Producing Water

Lily Ropes” was conducted at Aurora Senior High School in Ballesteros, Aurora, Isabela. This

study was conducted from January 11, 2019 to DATE.

This study focused in testing the effectiveness of stalk braider machine in producing water

lily ropes. (Treatments)

The product will be tested using the following parameters: a) Durability of the product

through its maximum tenacity b) Affordability of the machine c) the Acceptability of its physical

appearance through survey that will be conducted among 50 randomly selected respondents.

The length of each rope will be constant. Other variable such us the origin of the water lily

and additional uses of the machine as well as other materials that will be braided by the machine

will be limited in the study.
