Scientific and Technological Developments in the Philippines

1. The Prevalence of Filipino Inventions and Innovations

A. Salamander Amphibious Tricycle
Made by Chief Designer Victor "Atoy" Llave, together with H20 Technologies, this
tricycle can travel both on land and water. Since Philippines is an archipelago and is hit by
heavy storms most of the time resulting to flooding, this invention is perfect for the country.
Not only it can travel through flooded streets, but it can also cross lakes and rivers. It is either
powered by 5-kilowatt electric motor that runs on electricity or 250 cc internal combustion
type gasoline engine. Through this, Atoy is hoping to change the "Philippine-made-only
mentality" and to show the world that "the Filipino can”.
B. Salt Lamp
Electricity is one of the many needs that a lot of Filipinos doesn't have access to. Many are
resorting to candles and kerosene lamps as a source of light but these impose certain risks as
they are fire hazard. Rechargeable batteries and Solar panels are also considered out of the
options since they are too expensive for ordinary Filipinos. Luckily, Aisa Mijeno was able to
come up with Sustainable Alternative Lighting or SALt Lamp. This lighting system runs on
saltwater therefore making it safe, environment-friendly and cheap.
C. Water Gasoline- also known as “Tubig na Gasoline” or “Dazo Water Fuel Hydrogen”
This is an innovation of Noli Dazo, a Filipino graduate from Southern Nevada. It enables
a vehicle to run not with diesel or gasoline, but with water (H20). In line with this, it also has
improved power engine that produces the same speed as gasoline or diesel engine. This is
significantly beneficial to the Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) drivers, as well as to the
environment.
D. Medical Incubator
Philippines, during the 20th Century, lacks incubators especially in rural areas due to
scarcity of resources and electricity resulting to high mortality rate of newborn babies. Dr. Fe
del Mundo, a Filipino pediatrician, created an alternative incubator made from cheap
materials. It is made by placing a native laundry basket inside a bigger one and placed hot
water bottles in between to maintain warmth and oxygen circulation suited for a newborn.
E. Mosquito Ovicidal/Larvicidal Trap System
Dengue is certainly common in the Philippines nowadays and is rampant during the rainy
seasons. Insecticides, a previous solution to kill mosquitos, were proven to be harmful to the
people and the environment. Fortunately in 2010, the Department of Science and Technology-
Industrial Technology Development Institute or DOST-ITDI was able to come up with a
mosquito trap called Mosquito Ovicidal/Larvicidal Trap System or OL trap which consists of
natural ingredients which are safe for the people and the environment but not for the
mosquitos.
F. eJeepney
Although the iconic jeepneys were considered as a major innovation for the Philippines,
these public utility vehicles were harmful for the environment since they emit black smoke
and mainly contributes to noise pollution. To solve this, the eJeepney was developed which
utilizes electricity instead of diesel. Not only it is cheap, it is also safer for the environment.
G. Hydrogasifier
Invented by Roberto Celis, the hydrogasifier was developed as an anti-pollution device and
uses water as supplemental fuel. This works through the hot exhaust splitting the water into
hydrogen and oxygen gases, and transferring these to the combustion chapter to burn the fuel
completely. Moreover, this also increases the car’s power and lessens fuel consumption.

2. Technological Adaptations Implemented in the Philippines

A. Mobile Phone Usage
It seems that mobile phones are now considered as a “need” in today’s society for its numerous
benefits to people; having a mobile phone is like owning a desktop, a camera, a calculator, a radio,
and many more, all for the convenience of carrying a single tiny piece of device. Mobile Phones
have numerous features which aid man in order for them to ease daily life activities. Its main use
is centered on communication intended for people located with great distances. Through the use
of mobile phones, it makes it seem like we are closer to those we are communicating with. Mobile
Phones does not only offer us communications, it also serves our entertainment needs.
B. Online Education
With the use of modern technology, distance learning has become available to Filipino students
who would want to pursue their studies off-campus. Several educational institutions are starting to
provide such namely: AMA University Online Education (AMA OEd), University of the
Philippines Open University, PUP Open University System (PUP OUS), CAP College Foundation,
Inc., Asian Institute for Distance Education (AIDE), New Era University (NEU), Benguet State
University – Open University, Visayas State University – Open University, and E-Learning for
Agriculture and Fisheries.
C. Online Banking

D. Online Bills Payment

Internet - the invention of internet has a lot of benefits to many. We can surf the net and search for
news updates, lets us use social media, and helps communicate to other people. Calculator - as a
student, a calculator is a must have especially the scientific one because of its features. Calculator
made the lives of not only students, but also people working in different fields to ease math and solving
problems.
