Reflective Essay-1

Organizational Behaviour and Human Resource Management, as a module, teaches us the non-
expiring lifetime lesson of cause, effect and solutions (management) related to behaviour of Human
Resource in any organizations. In the modern globalized and competitive business environment,
people are the key assets of any organization and should be managed responsibly to achieve
success. As a real-life oriented module, we were given a group task to accomplish with minimum
resources with the help of proper planning and co-ordination among co-members. We performed
quite well but lost the competition. In my point of view, some of the reasons behind it were lack of
leadership, proper planning, and communication.

Firstly, our team was lacking a good leadership personnel. Generally, I always lead my team. But in
this task, I stepped back and helped my team because I had no proper idea of making a reliable
tower which could hold three soft-drink cans with just paper and tape. So, there was no officially
declared leader who could lead our team effectively. The consequences were that there was no
proper direction and control in the group. So, the team was not organized well. Therefore, lack of
good leadership skill was the main reason behind our defeat.

Secondly, absence of suitable planning was one of the reasons behind our failure. Before the
starting of task we discussed and came up with many plans. But we all could not agree in one plan in
last moment. Therefore, there was confusion between us regarding the plan. There was absence of
conceptual skills in our team. One of our member started to build the tower and we had no option but
to help him. None of us knew what was going on due to lack of skill. However, everyone helped him
in building the tower and I brought water to protect our tower from competitors and destroy theirs.
So, lack of proper planning was also the reason behind our failure.

Lastly, there was weak communication between us. We were confused throughout the task. We did
not know what we were doing and this resulted in not-so-competitive tower. Everyone tried to
execute their own plan. So, we did not complete the task in time and lost to our competitors.

In conclusion, we were a fabulous team with great talent but lack of managerial skills costed us a
win. From starting phase, we did a couple of mistakes one after another. Lack of good leadership
skill was the costliest mistake. There was no proper planning and communication between the
members which lead to dissatisfaction among the group fellows. Other reasons of failure were lack
of conceptual skills. We were confused with the plan we made in less than five minutes which
afterwards lead to dissatisfaction among us. But, teamwork and respect for each other helped us in
completing our goal. The good thing is that I have learned many things from this failed task. From
this task I have learned the importance and techniques of being a good leader, value of proper
planning and specially time. Therefore, good leadership skills, planning and communication are the
key factors of achieving the goal in any organization.
