Building the 1D KdV Equation Model

Startup 4.x.
Select 1D.
Click Next.
Click Twistie for Mathematics in the Add Physics window.
Click Twistie for PDE Interfaces General Form PDE (g).
Click Add Selected.
In the Model Wizard – Dependent variables – Number of dependent
variables edit window.
Enter 2.

Figure 4.1 shows the Desktop Display – Model Wizard – Dependent


variables – Number of dependent variables edit window.
Click Next.
Select Time Dependent in the Select Study Type window.
Click Finish (Flag).
Click Save As MMUC4_1D_KdV_1.mph.

Right-Click in the Model Builder window on Geometry 1.
Select Interval from the Pop-up menu.
Enter -8 in the Settings – Interval – Left endpoint entry window.
Enter 8 in the Settings – Interval – Right endpoint entry window.
Press the Tab key.

Right-Click in the Model Builder window on Model 1 u PDE (g).
Select Periodic Condition from the Pop-up menu.
Select Settings – Periodic Condition – Selection All boundaries
from the Pop-up menu.

Enter 6*u1*u1x in the first row of the Settings – General Form
PDE – Source Term – f edit-field array.
Enter u2 in the second row of the Settings – General Form
PDE – Source Term – f edit-field array.
Enter 0 in the second column - second row of the Settings – General
Form PDE – Damping or Mass Coefficient – da edit-field array.

Values 1.
Enter -6*sech(x[1/m])^2 in the Settings – Initial Values – Initial value
for u1.
Enter -24*sech(x[1/m])^2*tanh(x[1/m])^212*sech(x[1/m])^2*
(1-tanh(x[1/m])^2) in the Settings – Initial Values – Initial value for u2.
