VISION

"Together we create the enterprises of tomorrow"

MISSION

"To provide world-class information technology solutions and services to enable our
customers to serve their customers better"

OUR HISTORY

The genesis of HCL began at a Delhi "barsaati" (akin to a garage start-up) in 1976 which evolved
three decades later into a dynamic USD 5 Billion Global Empire.

A young team of six led by Shiv Nadar, the pioneers of HCL, believed in the growth prospects
IT industry had for India. Today HCL is one of the leading IT enterprises employing 60,000
professionals, with a global presence in 23 countries spanning locations worldwide.

Acknowledged as a visionary by the IT industry and his peers, Shiv Nadar has been a man ahead
of his times who often made daring forays based on his conviction of the future. Recognized as
one of India's most effective entrepreneurs, Shiv Nadar sees a parallel with top-level
sportspersons, in terms of their sharp focus on goals and complete commitment to their
achievement. For conceptualization, he draws inspiration from the performing and fine arts,
where preconceived notions are questioned.

Shiv Nadar firmly believes that, "If you want to empower people, give them the tools. There's
enough entrepreneurship in this country to take care of the rest." He is quick to grasp new
opportunities, select a team to transform his ideas into reality and delegate the project to
competent professionals.

From modest beginning 3 decades ago, Shiv Nadar entered the Forbes List of billionaires in the
year 2000. In 2007 he was ranked 214 globally and among the top fifteen in India. Business
Standard ranked him 4th in the billionaires club and he is also amongst the top 20 Indian
personalities as per the Business Today – Cirrus survey. During this process, he has not only
created wealth for himself but also for his customers, partners, employees, and investors. The
scorching pace did not go unnoticed nationally or internationally. Shiv Nadar was awarded the
Padma Bhushan by the President of India, Pratibha Patil on May 5, 2008. The Padma Bhushan is
the country’s third highest civilian honour conferred by the President of India to recognize
distinguished service of a high order to the nation, in any field. The award is not just an
acknowledgement of HCL’s many firsts in the technology domain or Shiv Nadar’s contribution
to the IT industry; but also of his efforts in the field of education and to the upliftment of public
health in India.

Armed with an uncanny foresight and a global outlook, Shiv Nadar has charted a defining
growth path for his company as well as the Indian IT industry, both in India and across the
world.

The Initial years:

Developed the first indigenous micro-computer at the same time as Apple and 3
years before IBM's PC – in 1978. This micro-computer virtually gave birth to the
Indian computer industry.

HCL's in-depth knowledge of Unix led to the development of a fine grained multi-
processor Unix in 1988, three years ahead of Sun and HP.

The Growth Phase:

Along with the swiftly growing software technology industry, HCL, which was
hitherto known as the pioneer in modern computing made the advent into software
development.

HCL's R&D was spun off as HCL Technologies in 1997 to mark their advent into the
software services arena.

The World Phase:

Today, HCL sells more PCs in India than any other brand, runs Northern Ireland's
largest BPO operation, and manages the network for Asia's largest stock exchange
network apart from designing zero visibility landing systems to land the world's
most popular airplane. And this it does across 23 countries and across 360 service
locations in India.

The TIME magazine has referred to HCL as an "intellectual clean room where its
employees could imagine endless possibilities". The fact is, over the last thirty years
that HCL has been operational; the company has stood by its values and core
philosophy.
Fueled by the entrepreneurial zeal of its founders, HCL developed the first
indigenous micro-computer in 1978, at the same time as Apple. Since then, HCL has
had a 3 decade rich history of inventions and innovations. Intrapreneur is the term
that best describes the HCL employees. Ever since HCL entered into an alliance in
1970s, partnerships and HCL have been inseparable. Bonds have been forged with
partners to co - create value. Strong inorganic growth is a testimony to the spirit of
partnerships.

This entrepreneurial and win-win relationship driven culture continues to guide HCL
in all its endeavors.
