TUTORIAL SHEET – 1

PATTERN ALLOWANCES

1- The casting shown in figure (1) is to be made in plain carbon steel using a wooden pattern
assume the shrinkage allowance only. Calculate the dimension of the pattern. Shrinkage
allowance for steel is 21.0 mm/m

Figure (1)

2- For the question no. 1 if master pattern is to be made of aluminium, calculate the dimension
of the wooden pattern, which is to be used for making the aluminium pattern. Shrinkage
allowance for aluminium is 13.0 mm/m
3- For the question no. 1 what will be the pattern dimension if all the surfaces of the casting
need to be machined.
4- Grey cast iron block 200×100×10 mm are to be cast in sand mould. Shrinkage allowance for
pattern making is 1%. Find the ratio of the volume of pattern to that of the casting
5- A casting of dimensions 50×80×20 mm is to be made of steel by casting process. The mould
for this job is made from wooden pattern. Determine the dimensions of the wooden pattern.
Assume machining allowance of 2 mm on each side, shrinkage allowance of 2% and taper
allowance of 1 degree
6- A casting of dimensions 80×40×30 mm is to be made of steel by casting process. The mould
for this job is made from wooden pattern. Determine the dimension of wooden pattern
assuming machining allowance of 3 mm on each side, shaking allowance of 1 mm on length
and width, shrinkage allowance of 3%.
7- While cooling, a cubical casting of side 40mm undergoes 3% , 4% and 5% volume shrinkage
during the liquid state , phase transition and solid state, respectively. Calculate the volume of
metal compensated from the riser?
8- A mould cavity has the shape of a cube, 100 mm on a side. Determine the volume and
dimensions of then final cube after cooling to room temperature if the cast metal is copper.
Assume that the mould is full at the start of the solidification and that shrinkage occurs
uniformly in all direction. For copper, solidification shrinkage is 4.9%, solid contraction during
cooling is 7.5%.
9- Block of size 100× 50× 10 mm with a central spherical cavity of diameter 4 mm are and cast.
The shrinkage allowance for the pattern is 3%. Calculate the ratio of volume of the pattern to
volume of casting.
10- A cubic casting of 50mm side undergoes volumetric solidification shrinkage and volumetric
solid contraction of 4% and 6% respectively. No riser is used. Calculate size of then cube after
solidification and contraction.
