around 18,39,720 (13 lakhs urban population and remaining is rural population), with a daily
floating population of 4 to 5 lakhs. The Commissionerate area comprises Vijayawada Municipal
Corporation proper and surrounding 179 villages of 9 mandals viz., Ibrahimpatnam, Vijayawada
Rural, Penamaluru, Gannavaram, Unguturu, Kankipadu, Vuyyuru, Thotlavalluru and
Pamidimukkala of Krishna District.

As per the Demographia World Urban Areas:2016 , Vijayawada city is the third most densely
populated in built-up areas of the world with a population density of 31,200 per Sq KM. The Pandit
Nehru Bus Station (PNBS) and Vijayawada Railway Stations are one of the biggest in South
India. Vijayawada City is presently the seat of administration to AP State and it is also the
commercial and trading capital. Vijayawada is also a gate way to Amaravathi, Capital of
AP. Three National Highways viz., 1. NH -16 (Calcutta– Chennai) – 31 Kms 2. NH – 30
(Vijayawada–Jabalpur- Bareilly) – 8.5 Kms 3. NH- 65 (Pune – Machilipatnam) – 34.2 Kms and
four State Highways viz., 1. SH- 110 ( VJA to Nuzvid ) – 14.2 Kms 2. SH- 111(Gudiwada to
Kankipadu ) – 10 Kms 3. SH-15 (Gollapudi Bypass) – 5.44 Kms and 4. SH-45 (Bandar Road to
Vuyyuru town) – 26.267 km pass through the Vijayawada city. Jawahar Auto Nagar (Auto Industry
Hub), the largest in Asia, located in Patamata area of Vijayawada city attracts about 2500 Lorries
every day.

In Vijayawada City total non-transport vehicles are 6,78,004. Out of which four wheelers are
60869 and Two Wheelers are 505424 and remaining are other vehicles . The Transport vehicles
are 94,937 , out of which 27296 are Auto Rickshaws, 19044 are Heavy Goods carriages
(HGV),9664 are Light Goods Carriages (LGV) , 1786 are Medium Goods Carriages (MGV), 5705
are Motor cabs and remaining are other vehicles. The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport
Corporation (APSRTC) runs more than 450 city buses in the city and a total of 2,600
APSRTC buses entering into the PNBS from various routes in the city. About 1700 vehicles ply
for educational institutes in various routes in the city. As three important high ways pass through
the Vijayawada city, about 4000 lorries cross Vijayawada City every day.

Vijayawada city is an important commercial center, educational hub and it has become
functional capital of State of Andhra Pradesh. All these factors made Traffic Management a
challenging Task in Vijayawada city
