ABSTRACT
This article updates the current know ledge on the role of non-protein
nitrogen, especially urea, in the degradation of rumen microorganisms and
their effect on ruminal degradability of forages with a high content in fiber. It
also discusses the effect of sulfuron microbial metabolism in the rumen and its
impact on the digestion of structural carbohydrates, digestible energy supply
and microbial protein synthesis. On the other hand, itrefersto the tick control
on tropical cattle supplied by sulfur. These three areas are closely related to
achother, so supply ing the appropriate and efficient optimization strategy of
using non-protein nitrogen mixed with sulfur, particularly in a complete mineral
mixture, will argely depend the biological and economic benefits for the cattle
production systems in the tropics.
