Find two quotes that you think explain what the play is about, what ideas

the play addresses. Record these lines, citing Act & scene.

For each quote, discuss the following in a paragraph of 150 – 200 words:

· What is happening in the play in this moment? (Plot)

· Why is this significant? What inferences can we draw from this moment?
How does it deepen our understanding of the character, plot and theme?
(Literary analysis)

“I have doubts... I have such doubts!”

In this moment in the play you see that Sister Aloysius has confessed
to Sister James that she has doubts about what she has done. I have chosen
this quote because I believe this quote shows to the reader that Sister
Aloysius has such stress over this whole situation, possibly feeling guilt for
what she has done. With continuing to press for what she believed in, the
truth was exposed. Sister Aloysius had done the right thing. From this
moment we can see that no matter how strong Sister Aloysius has been
through out the play she is only human and feels all the emotions that you
and I feel. This moment in the play deepens our understanding of Sister
Aloysius because we see that she has her moments of uncertainty. Through
out all that has happened in this play and the skeletons that were brought
out from Father Fylnns closet we can most defiantly see why this quote is
also the last quote in the book. The reoccurring theme of uncertainty in
many aspects of life whether in ourselves the future or the actions of others.

"I want to say to you: doubt can be a bond as powerful and sustaining as
certainty"
In this moment of the play Father Flynn opens up with a powerful
sermon on the topic of doubt and these are his last couple of words before
Amen. I have chosen this quote because not only this quote but this sermon
explains a theme that rings throughout the whole play. The idea of doubt
and how no matter how much doubt you have you must know that you are
not the only one thats lost in this world. One could say that doubt is one of
the most human emotions because it proves weakness in some of the
strongest people. This quote deepens our understanding of the character
because at the end of the play one can go back to see that Father Flynn has
probably doubted himself many times, Giving us insight into who Father
Flynn is. In the end when the truth is exposed we can go back to this quote
and connect it to Sister Aloysius last words in the play about how she has
such doubts. These two quotes are connected because in this sermon Father
Flynn preaches about how we can be bonded under doubt with those who
are also doubtful, an example of someone else who is doubtful is Sister
James.
