1 Introduction

When business organizations are taken into consideration, all business organizations are

consisting of set of individuals who work together as a team to achieve specific

organizational goals. Achieving set objectives refers to the efficiency, effectiveness and

productivity which are largely depend on the employees of the organization. Therefore

study of organizational behaviour or in other words study of human behaviour is very

important for managers in the current context of the business world simply due to the fact

that identifying complex nature of human behaviour helps managers to employee human

resources effectively and efficiently. The influence of individual differences on

organisational behaviour has become significant and remarkable. Therefore organizations

pay much higher emphasis for the process of recruitment and selection process when

hiring new employees. In the current context management pay more emphasis on attitudes

of employees than their qualifications and experiences. That has become essential for any

organization operates today due to the dynamic environment which causes many

challenges. Therefore in order to ensure the development of organisational effectiveness, it

is critical to evaluate the individual differences to discover how those differences affect

individual performance, so to influence organisation’s performance.

Organizations are striving to find right individual for specific jobs by taking individual

differences into account and organisations have expanded their interest to the individual-

organisation fit. Efficient management of people within a diverse environment is becoming

a bigger challenge for all managers. It is obvious that each person in this world is unique

and therefore each individual is differ from others and individual differences are the basis

of diversity. Hence, an effective manager in modern business world is required to be able

to identify individual differences and coordinate individual with organisation’s

requirement in order to sustain in the business world in the long run operation.

1.1 Rationale of selecting the article

As explained above, Individual differences in workplace such as diversity factors,

personality, ability and skills, perception and attitude will affect work behaviour like

productivity, creativity and performance. In the selected article, the study carried out

globally, where 37 countries have participated for the survey on “Ggenerational

differences in work quality characteristics and job satisfaction” elaborate significant

differences of individual based on variables such as the nature of the work, work sector,

social interactions, co-workers, supervision, pay, cultural values, work values, and

personality, age and generational differences. This study covers both individual and

situational factors that affects employees’ performance and work engagement of

employees. Since study carried out globally, research outcome can be used to generalize

for many countries to interpret individual differences on generations. Therefore article

will give in-depth information about how internal & external factors influence employee

performance and how individuals behave differently who represent different generations

in the world. This is common to Sri Lanka context as well
