Welcome to your new semester class in Marine Biology and Oceanography with Ms. Hazel!

I am excited to meet your acquaintance. I look
forward to a semester full of teaching, learning
and some outdoor fun with you all. The study
of marine science is quite vast. In this course
you should expect to gather an understanding
of the aquatic world in which we reside.
We will first study the oceanography aspect of
this course by looking at varied aspects of the
water cycle, weather systems, ocean currents
and much more. By learning about the ocean
first we will understand why it is of utmost
importance to take care of our land as well as
our waterways due to the interconnectedness
of our water world.

I have designed this course to include several
field trips in order for us to have a true hands-
on approach to learning. Hopefully all of you
will be able to attend at least one of the trips
that I have planned. We may or may not be able
to experience real-life animal dissections – this
is dependent upon available resources.

Secondly, we will study the marine aspect of
this course. We will observe marine
environments right in our own backyard (Jones
Beach, Fire Island, and Oyster Bay).
Furthermore, we will use microscopy to study
living creatures that may lurk in freshwater or

All work is collected on a rolling basis unless a
hard deadline is otherwise scheduled.
