NIGHT
A VAMPIRE: DARK AGES CAMPAIGN

MATERIAL DE CAMPAÑA
I. THE TRUTH
1.1 ON THE FIRST VAMPIRE (3800 – 3500 BC):

The first vampire, the being that would later be known to modern vampires by the biblical
name of ‘Cain’ would be found in a state of torpor around the year 3800 BC, when a clearly
artificial stone slab was removed by method of the use of pulleys, near the Sumerian
settlement of Uruk.

What would be later known as Sumer was nothing but a loosely independent number of
settlements of a comparative small size in number that had managed to start raising adobe
buildings and had known the forging of bronze during the last millennia. For a series of
meteorological and geological circumstances, the flow of the rivers in the zone was stable,
abundant and not subjected to unpredictable floods during centuries that had allowed the
nomad tribes of the region to slowly settle down and start intensive agrarian exploitation.

With settlement had come advance. With agriculture had come inventions such as early
cuneiform writing (just the ordained pressing of simple signals on clay in established pattern,
first very simple but slowly increasingly complex during a time of 300 years) and bronze
working that started to allow the increased use of tools that actually allowed the very opening
of the cairn to be possible in the first place.

Skirmishes between settlements were uncommon but possible, and a first division of labor
between warriors and farmers had been established, the first need for organized labor. The
system was a matriarchy, and the religion female-centered, even when the organization of
schools of men had been abandoned with just some archaic remains in society.

The cairn would have been discovered probably centuries before, and given it strangeness (the
slab of rock was clearly not of natural origin and not possible to produce with the current
technology) it might have become a religious place of worship. It would only be opened when
the technique and resources to extract it by brute force, and also the religious will to do so.
When the cairn was opened, a single, perfectly preserved corpse was on a single and perfect
obsidian slab. The arranging was perfect, and the walls were also perfectly smooth obsidian
black. With him there were just two artifacts, an unnaturally huge sword, bigger than a man
and thus unwieldable and an armor made from the same material, this one in a size that would
perfectly fit a normal sized man (and indeed the first vampire) but weighing too much for any
man to bear (as indeed, the sword).

It’s difficult to establish if the first vampire did awaken automatically, or the center continued
being a cult center now with the torpored vampire in its center. There were even then magick
practitioners even when their strength was obviously of a very weak nature that might have
sensed the raw essence contained on the supposedly incorruptible corpse. And the first blood
might have produced by those first rituals or by some basic primal research by a practitioner of
the Art.

There were several clear facts in this first creature. It was not of the same ethnic origin than
the Sumerian people that awakened him. He was a male and of tall height, and when he
awakened he had no memory whatsoever of any experience before his awakening. Because
indeed, in less than a generation since his discovery, the first Vampire would be awakened as
blood was poured on his face.

It’s impossible to fathom the circumstances and immediate consequences and events after
such an event. The very story of vampires would have ended if he would have been exposed to
the sunlight or if he would have been attacked with decision. But the fact is that the society
that awakened him did not destroy him.

The first vampire had no memories or experiences about his vampirism condition. It would be
probably a slow process of discovery, not only of his special capabilities, but also of his special
vulnerabilities. It is clear that apart from the higher potential and the increased maximum
blood capacity this first vampire would be not more powerful than a recently embraced
vampire.

It is unknown if he would be reviled and trapped at the beginning or instantly adored as a

supernatural being. There is evidence that he was not of an inherent evil or controlling nature,
as he did not seek to subjugate or destroy those who find him and about one hundred years
after his discovery, he was clearly integrated in Uruk’s religious and military structure in a
subservient role. There is no evidence that this first vampire would not believe the very same
religious stories that the people from Uruk themselves would have told him as he slowly would
have learnt to speak their language.

The expansion and power of the Uruk settlement are clearly attributable to the presence of
the first Vampire. Probably the discovery of Ghoul making would be discovered way earlier
than the way to create more vampires. The first vampire himself, even when he was clearly
revered as a supernatural being, clearly did not seek command, and being still a male, he
would clearly just take control of the male organizations and roles, and remained faithful to
the queen.
I estimate that the healing proprieties of the vampiric blood would be discovered just in some
years, while only the fact that it unnaturally prolonged life and the link it created between
vampire and ghoul would be discovered in all its full extent in at least decades. Probably it was
this discovery what would have decided the first vampire to assume a more direct control, as
with such power at his disposal the human authorities would have certainly wanted to
consume blood from him indefinitely. Still, either for religious taboo of dealing with dead
people the Embrace itself would not be discovered for two centuries.

His name at the time was clearly not Caine, but probably something in the like of Mesh-ki-ang-
gasher.

1.2 THE SECOND AND THIRD GENERATIONS (3500 – 2500 BC):

Unlike it would be believed later, the first childe that the first vampire would produce would
not be the Queen of Enoch, but one of the high ranking military chiefs of the city. In all
likelihood a personal friend of the vampire and a male he would be the one identified later as
the soldier, and probably he was created in a desperate attempt by the first vampire to heal
him as he was mortally injured. The result would have been very surprising for all parties
involved, but the consequences and the clear fact that the newly embraced man was now
clearly of the same nature than the vampire would deeply affect the beliefs and the very fabric
of the society in Uruk.

The second and third members of this second generation were created without a doubt during
the next years If not the next months. There is no doubt than the second one converted would
be the Queen of Enoch, but it’s only speculated that the third vampire was only her royal
selected mate. Still, it was obvious that the first vampire was not willing to produce more
vampires and that his long age had made him not only doubt the local religion but also to
realize that his developing powers put him out of any level of menace at the hands of the local
authority. Once the second generation was created, and such a crisis was forced, finally, the
first vampire took complete and public control of Uruk.

His reign lasted for about a millennium. It was clear that he did not wish vampirism to be freely
extended. He would not sire more children, and he only allowed the second generation to sire
a very limited number of children, and that third generation to sire no child at all. At first, the
power of the first vampire would be terrifying even for the second generation, in the same
way that a new sired vampire would regard a 300 years old vampire, but as centuries would
advance, the balance of power would clearly adjust. It was probably only through personal
allegiance of his first childe and members of the third generation that he would retain full
control as long as he remained ruler of Uruk and the growing empire that he created in the
land of the two rivers. The population flourished and with a secured territory from any
external aggression, with armies of ghouls during the day and of powerful vampires during the
night, only natural barriers and the rudimentary transport methods and logistic techniques did
prevent its influence to reach beyond the region in other starting states such as Egypt or India.
It was clear that the first vampire was wise for the control he retained and how he applied it.
He did not antagonize other powers in the starting world, and he did not tyrannize his people,
by the standards of the time. And he was clearly aware that augmenting the number of
vampires would put a toll in the human population, in the short (blood) and the long run
(dominion). The numbers of the 3rd generation, even later restricted to just 13 members, was
probably about double or triple this number, and there was a clear equilibrium between the
three members of the 2nd generation.

It was impossible to guess how long would such dominion lasted as the history would have
advanced and the Ur Empire would have found other starting countries such as Egypt starting
to interact, but the fact is that in the middle of the 3rd millennium the first vampire left the city.
It was clear that he planned to return, considering the way he left power, distributing it
between the members of the second generation in a balance that could only be precarious.
But he never did. It is a testament to his charisma and wise and measured but personal and
autocratic government how quickly the situation fully deteriorated.

In less than a century the govern of the 2nd generation became factional and in some cases
clearly tyrannical for both the 3rd generation and the human population, and the Ur empire
soon succumbed to infighting between raising vampiric factions.

When the real fight started, it engulfed the city of Ur in a hecatomb of supernatural
dimensions. With vampires that were up to a thousand years old fighting to the final death,
the destruction probably covered the whole capital and its population.

At the end, the center of power of Ur, its capital and most its buildings, armies and in fact
population, had been vanquished, and among the flames only 13 survivors of the 3rd
generation stood. It is unclear if they were the victorious faction or they just decided they had
nothing to fight for, but the fact is that after making a try to rebuild the empire founding a
second capital that only lasted a pair of centuries; they decided to part ways and seek
dominions and experiences away from each other. No 4th generation was created before this
point. It was not clear if they still had obeyed an order from the first vampire or just all the
previous 4th generation members had died in the infighting. It is not clear that diablerie was
discovered in this confrontation, even when the ways of disposing for vampires permanently,
specially fire and sunlight, certainly had. If it had, the 3rd generation members kept the secret
until at least a millennium later when it would be an advantage in wars between clans.

1.3 THE BIRTH OF THE CLANS (2500 - 2000 BC):

When the thirteen 3rd generation members scattered, each one went to start embracing new
childe of their own, starting their own families. It is clear that they did only embrace sparingly,
knowing fully the fates of their own sires at their hands, and the difference between the
youngest of the 3rd generation and the oldest of the 4th was probably at least half a
millennium.
The world around 2500 had already aspiring nations, but not all were defenseless before the
elder vampires. Nations such as Egypt and the far East civilization in China had developed
powerful Magick practitioners that controlled in medium or great measure their nations. The
wilderness and most of the larger areas were only smaller and scattered human tribes lived
were controlled by the Children of the Moon. Still, some of the 3rd generation members
managed to found or control their own nations.

It’s clear that Brujah and his progeny controlled the lands of Syria and Canaan. Ventrue helped
the Assyrians to found their empire and was their god. Tzimisce found a home with the Hittites
and was behind their driving force.

Many other just preferred smaller power bases or just their own sensitivities did not incline
them to temporal power, at least for the moment. And some were not successful, as Set did
not manage to wrestle control of Egypt but for small periods from the first organized Magick
cult. One member in particular, Hassam, was clearly dedicated to fight actively at least against
the efforts for temporal power of the other members of the 3rd generation.

All in all, it is clear that the so called antediluvians were not the unnatural inhuman monsters
that are depicted today. At least certainly not more inhuman than any elder of 500 to 1000
years of age nowadays. They were certainly very human minded yet and as such they acted.
And certainly after a first period of a few centuries, the clans themselves started to fragment
and intermingle, making any unified effort impossible. The antediluvian were certainly
powerhouses, but they still had to rely for extended conquest on human subjects and in their
children who inevitably would grow slowly more and more independent. By the year 1000 BC
while some clans had clear geographical basis, most of them were uniformly extended through
human civilization. And while their personal power was great, it was far from their complete
capabilities to completely control the course of history even of single nations.

Also, vampires of these first generations had slowly found that secrecy and hiding their nature
worked usually in their advantage and only in few cases the vampires ruled openly over the
human population. Also the antediluvian themselves were very wary to embrace child, rather
preferring to just embrace those who considered would be perfectly faithful, and letting those
embrace 5th generation members to build up the bulk of the forces of the clan later, with a
greater gap in power and easier to control or manipulate. That, with the wariness that had
been instilled to them about creating new vampires by Caine. Only later the 4th generation
would be freer to embrace new members and the 5th generation and posterior would start to
embrace more freely and with far less restraint.

1.4 CLAN POLITICS BEFORE THE EMPIRE:

This part plans to examine the history of each of the clan until the very year of the ascent of
Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus Augustus as first emperor of Rome.

Vampires remained restricted to the Mediterranean: Europe, Northern Africa and the Middle
East. The reasons for this are varied. The biggest reason was certainly the very strong presence
in the wilderness of the Children of the Moon of different types. No vampire could survive if he
dared to venture to sub-Saharan Africa or beyond because of the overabundant presence of
this force in this continent, except for a single exception. These also limited greatly the
presence of vampires in the wilder places of deeper Europe and at least certainly greatly
impeded any journey to the Far East. And those who would try to go beyond India at this point
would find a strong presence of already powerful magick practitioners that ended up
exterminating them.

THE WARS FOR THE CRESCENT: 2000 - 500 BC

Clans Brujah, Tzimisce and Ventrue established their power bases in the Middle East and
would be the main actors in vampiric politics for the next two millennia. The Brujah in the
coast of Phoenicia, the Tzimisce in Anatolia and the Ventrue in the land of the two rivers. The
war that ensued for control would span for centuries and would go back and forth, rising and
toppling vampire controlled empires.

The Brujah would be the first to fall against their rivals, to the point that the clan itself would
succumb to vicious infighting and the 4th generation Brujah member Troile would discover (or
at least make resurface) diablerie and devour his own sire, having to flee with the remains of
his clan to a far colony of Phoenicia called Carthage, where he started rebuilding his power
base in a very personal and unique style of govern that openly exposed the vampiric masters
to the human population, in an open ‘social contract’ between them. The tendency during
those two thousand years, though, took the opposite direction as vampires each time became
more secretive and manipulative, either finding it more useful for dominion, or for those who
did not seek temporal power to avoid being hunted by human populations that would feel
menaced by vampires.

The next to fall would be the Tzimisce that after some first successes against the Ventrue
controlled empires, finally fell completely to the Ventrue controlled Persian Empire. In this
open vampiric war the Tzimisce suffered huge losses and were they were forced to pass to the
other side of the sea, the much diminished clan contenting itself with minor Thracian and
Dacian tribes and developing extremely xenophobic tendencies.

The great victor would be the Ventrue clan, which would form during this period, and in the
ancestral memories of the elders the image of being the ruling clan per excellence, also aided
by their dominion of the lands in which the first and second cities stood, and the propaganda
extended by the staunch traditionalist Ventrue who claimed that he wanted to govern as Caine
had intended in the first city. But it was clear in the territories they governed that only Ventrue
descended were treated with vampiric rights for dominion.

The power of the antediluvian and his clan were so great that he dared to attack the magick
controlled Egypt, succeeding where Setites had not for more than two millennia, completely
driving off the mages and forcing the Setites themselves to go underground.

At 500 BC their power was clearly unrivalled, controlling all the ancient sites of civilization
except for India, separated by natural barriers. It was natural that it fixed its next target of
conquest in the nascent Greek cities.

The other clans were not as interested in dominion at this period and their numbers slowly
dispersed with the time. The Assamites were the only clan that during the ages would remain
fully focused and organized, but their very objective to destroy other vampires put them at
odds with the others and soon had to hide themselves from their cousins. Clans such as
Gangrel, Cappadocian, Salubri or Toreador just dispersed completely, living each one on their
own and only bound by common interests or lifestyles. Some clans such as the Ravnos would
have the most population in some particular area such as India, but at the end of this period
they would be some in most of the areas of the known Western world.

The Clan Lasombra would be a late developer. During the first centuries the founder
disappeared into dark Africa. And when everybody would assume he had perished, he would
return centuries later with a single Childe of the 4th generation. Only then he would start to
establish his own power base. Sharing without too many problems in the city states of Greece
and the coast of Anatolia, and finally controlling more exclusively the island of Sicily, even
when at the end of this period could not manage to drive the ascent of Brujah power and
started to fight a slow war in the island.

THE FALL OF VENTRUE AND THE BIRTH OF THE JYHAD: 500 – 300 BC
At the year 500 BC, Ventrue power was unrivalled. It had driven completely its main opponent,
and from the court of Persepolis, the Ventrue antediluvian administered a network of
satrapies that covered all the ancient lands of the known world. By this moment the Ventrue
founder was already about 2500 years old, and had been one of the first to develop a real
powerbase network in the mortal realm. The very success he had relied on the organization of
the satrapies, and the fact that, unlike the Brujah and the Tzimisce , pushed ghoul and
vampires in his organization to aid at great speed cities that were under attack from other
clans. Of course, his rule would be draconian and fierce, but for the ‘king of the hill’ approach
of other clans with similar interests, it was a great advance and the first true vampiric
organization. Only the Brujah retained in the far West a powerful stronghold of their own, and
only the nascent Lasombra power in Sicily and Southern Italy could be said that remained truly
independent. The members of the other clans had to pay homage to the Ventrue satraps, and
even give lip service to the new Ventrue ideology that the Ventrue antediluvian was the
chosen successor of First and the 2nd generation for the kingship of vampires.

Still, the success was not unnoticed by the other clans and other founders. While some had
decided not to care about politics (such as Saulot, Cappadocian and Gangrel ) or just could not
intervene (such as Troile, weaker than other antediluvians and worried only in maintain his
new powerbase and project in Carthage, or Tzimsce who had to retreat north). But the other
started to press back against Ventrue control in greater or lesser measure, fearing and
remembering the final nights of the first and second city that now the Ventrue antediluvian
would wish to be the only remaining 3rd generation member.

The lead of the effort was spearheaded by the clan founders that had found interests and
powerbases in the cities of Greece: the Toreador, Malkavian and Lasombra, and aided greatly
by clans who had been greatly damaged by the Ventrue: the Brujah and the Setite.

With a new sort of looser, but more flexible, varied and resourceful organization, after some
defeats in their cities in Anatolia they resisted the attempts of Ventrue to conquer the cities of
continental Greece and started to push back. The Ventrue organization was too rigid to
withstand an organized assault from so many fronts and slowly they started to fall back, and
finally absorbed in a cataclysmic end game that led the 4th generation leaders of the effort to
finally attack and exterminate the main powerbase of the Ventrue in Babylon, actually using
the armies of Alexander the Great as the main move in this final war. The Ventrue antediluvian
was destroyed and so much of the clan, its strength destroyed for centuries.

The former Ventrue dominions were broken down in pieces, each major city from Greece to
Egypt and the Indian frontier managed by one of the victors or their allies. Some Ventrue still
remained in control of their own cities despite the central collapse, but many were taken and
administered in an independent way. The Setites in particular finally managed a stranglehold
for the country that they had been wishing for Milennia: Egypt.

In more ways than one it would be the end of an era: the era of huge inter-clan wars, where
hundreds of vampires with a clear alligeance would attack unified other groups of similar sizes,
chasing themselves through the world until the complete anhilation or retreat of their
enemies.

Immediately, the formerly allied lords started to squabble over the spoils, and then it was
realized that if anything the Ventrue dominion had got used Vampires to stability and inner
law, harsh and unfair as it was. It was clear that not even one of the third generation was safe,
and with the knowledge of diablerie now widespread, the 3rd and the 4th generation grew
more and more paranoid, starting to govern, with some notable exceptions, from the
shadows, and being very wary to create any new offspring, if any new one at all. In the same
way the elders from 5th generation still upheld a severe control of population in all major cities.

If anything, after the defeat, the clans started to disperse, and even if some retained a very
strong clan policy (such as Assamites, Lasombra, Setites, Tzimisce and Ventrue) the rest started
to care more about their cities and personal allegiances than their clan members. And from the
6th generation and on, it was common in a same big city such as Athens to see several clans co-
existing.

THE RAISE OF ROME AND FALL OF CARTHAGE: 300 – 150 BC

In a way, the situation in the successor states of the Ventrue Empire would be much like the
organization of modern cities. Each city would have a ruler, who would keep the city and his
personal laws because of his personal power. An experiment such as the Ventrue Empire was
thought to be not possible, as no other clan had a leading figure willing or capable, be it for
lack of allegiance or of temporal power, to create such an extended dominion.

The Ventrue themselves were sorely disappointed, and embraced the new style of rulership in
a fervent manner. Other clans such as Brujah, Lasombra were actively led by their 3rd
generation and were holding a mortal territory under their sole control, but they made clear
that they desired no expansion into current cities (the Brujah would soon prove that they
would want to extend into unclaimed territories). Soon, the huge vampiric wars were a thing
of the past, and the new game that was the Jyhad was played in a much more personal
manner, leaving territorial conquests to human puppets, the vampiric lords just fanning the
flames of war just considering the wealth that it would bring to their own cities, what added
population, or just using a human war to destroy a particular city. In the time, a thousand
feuds between particular elders would be created, and alliances and enmities would be forged
for the next centuries.

But an interclan group would feel different. A pair of 4th generation vampires, survivors from
the last part of the huge Ventrue war, would decide to start in a new land, the middle of the
Italian peninsula, a new style of government, more focused in joint government rather than a
single tyrant.

They found the sort of city they were looking for in Rome. A ravaged city they found, freshly
attacked by the Gauls, the previous vampires of the city annihilated by the Ventrue war chief
Tiamat that had claimed the region as hers, after fleeing the Ventrue as she had performed
diablerie in her sire, in a simple campaign of terror and plundering.

These vampires were the Lasombra Sybil, the toreador Beshter and the Malkavian Cybele.
They had seen the last of the Ventrue empire and were decided to form a society that would
be ordained and controlled, while still giving the vampires a certain measure of freedom and
protect them from the excesses of the tyrants. The Ventrue Tiamat was convinced by their
vision but only agreed to join them if she would be considered their leader. They accepted and
they started to build and promote Rome.

The experiment was successful. The other cities would only have a single 4th or 5th generation
vampire leading them, but now a whole group of 4th generations from different clans were
collaborating, and offering safe harbor, as they made the city of Rome conquer and grow, to
more and more Kindred that would accept their laws.
Many others noticed the sudden menace as their influence started to grow and menace the
domains of other established cities and many already predicted, and were right, that this was
the raise of a new Ventrue-like experiment. Still, with the antediluvians fully retreating out of
pure fear and paranoia from the first stage, it was up to the independent lords of the cities to
act against them, and not provoking the same send of inter-clan dread that the Ventrue
Empire had provoked, Rome prospered and expanded through all Italy in just a Century.

The next step for expansion would be Sicily. To everybody’s surprise the Lasombra
antediluvian agreed to accept Roman control over the island with the sole condition that the
castle of Shadow and its immediate region would be solely Lasombra. The Brujah that had
been battling the Lasombra for the control of Sicily would not be as understanding.

The war with Carthage started in the nights, and it was as much a war of dominion as of
ideology. Carthage was all that Rome was not. Where Carthage had just a single clan in charge,
Rome erased clan boundaries. Where Troile was the sole ruler, the roman senate ruled, and
Tiamat only ruled with their approval. Where Carthage was a place where vampires could
reveal into their nature freely, Rome had strict rules about the secrecy of the society.

During the first clash, vampires fought solely for the control of Sicily. After a bitter struggle,
Rome won and the alliance between the Lasombra antediluvian and the Roman Senate was
forged and flourished.

When Carthage seeked to expand and conquer the cities in the iberic peninsula and found new
ones to instill their Brujah control and their own society, Rome reacted, and the conflagration
was as never seen. Two styles of understanding vampiric society would clash and only one
would remain victorious and true for the ages to come.

The fight would last decades and it would be bitter and lethal, but as in the fight against the
Ventrue Empire, the flexibility and variety of the Roman side would won against the more
homogeneous and close style of the Brujah war parties. The initial advantage would be in the
brutal and highly aggressive and physically powerful Brujah side, but slowly the influence and
the better and savvier managed resources at the hands of the Ventrue and the Lasombra
would slowly wear out the resources of Carthage.

One of the consequences of this extended fight is for the first time the indiscriminate embrace
by both parties of great numbers of mortals to be used and sent as cannon fodder after just
some years, many of the 7th or lower generations.

While the Brujah would insist in travelling and trying to attack directly the Roman leaders, the
Roman vampires strangled one by one their enemy’s secondary resources. First controlling and
wiping out the brujah in Hispania and southern Gaul, in Illirya and Sicily. Then, turning with an
incredibly furious attact against the surviving Brujah in the Italian peninsula, who thought they
had the Romans besieged. And only then they would dare to finally attack the Brujah
stronghold.

The war in Africa would be a version of the previous war around the Mediterranean, where the
Roman vampires again would apply the same style: strangle slowly Carthage itself, cutting the
Brujah from wealth and outer contact. While the peace between mortals would be signed, as
the Roman saw no reason to keep involving mortals in their affairs, they started a siege that
would last nearly half a century. Very few Brujah could leave undetected the each time
narrower circle around the city of Carthage, and the Roman centered first their efforts to
completely conquer and force allegiance in those cities in Greece that had favoured or
supported the Brujah in their fight.

At the end, the Roman dominion controlled all the Mediterranean and had conquered the
Greek cities, the surviving leaders of those cities dead or having had to recognize the authority
of the leaders of Rome. And only then the Romans finally attacked the remaining isolated
center. The assault was savage and half of the attacking war party died. But at the end not only
had the Brujah 3rd generation been killed but also most of the 4th and 5th generation Brujah.

1.5 THE EMPIRE:

PAX ROMANA: 150 BC– 400 AD

The triumph of the Roman vampires was absolute, as much as when the Ventrue antediluvian
had established his empire. The style of rule was also innovative and worked greatly for the
time. The head of the Senate would be the Ventrue Tiamat, formerly an outcast of the clan for
diablerizing her sire, but yet it was clear she did not rule without conditions. The heads of the
‘families’, mainly Lasombra, Toreador and Malkavian, but soon Cappadocian, Salubri and
Nosferatu would have a great say in the affairs of the dominion, and the security that the
particular city governors had that the huge vampiric armies of Rome would intervene if any
third party would try to claim their dominion gave stability to the political situation. The
Ventrue would add also the old traditions that worked in their old Empire, enforcing secrecy,
restriction on vampire creation out of times of war and giving the Roman vampiric senate an
aureole of being the true ‘heirs of Caine’ as the old Empire had.

Of course, not many agreed. The Gangrel found the Roman rule constrictive and oppressive.
The Setites and Tzimisce would care about their own regions and just felt territorially menaced
by their own systems, as they still preferred the old style clan-centric rule. The Assamite were
still the permanent outcasts, bogeymen that came from the shadows to strike in other
vampires for unknown reasons. And the Brujah were hunted to the very edges of civilization,
not admitted in any place the Romans had influence. Their very ideals were demonized and
their past was tainted with lies and exaggerations.

There were also other enemies. The powerful Methuselah Mithras still clinged to the older,
stricter ways and slowly managed to unify the old center of his empire, forming a new but
smaller and obviously way less influential Ventrue Empire in the East. And other powerful
Methuselahs of other clans still tried to cling to their millennia held cities on their own.

The Empire did not care. Slowly it started to expand, sure that their way was the best. It would
never be the first in a war of aggression, but rather when one party in a city would announce
that they wanted to submit to the Roman Senate, they would intervene in full force and
convert the city and region to their ways.

Soon it would feel powerful enough to even dare to attack the Stronghold of the Setites, and
to actually manage to defeat them and kill the Setite antediluvian with an ease and in a time
frame that nobody had expected, driving the Setites and turning them in an outcast clan in the
same way they had with the Brujah. They clashed also with Mithras and with the Tzimisce, but
despite their moderate success, other circunstances made conquest impossible or undesired.
At the height of their power, all the main civilized cities in the known world owed allegiance
and protection from the Council of Rome, lead, but not ruled, by Tiamat.

Of course the system was not without flaws. While it allowed a unified front against outer
enemies and allowed their war parties to be way more flexible and powerful thanks to their
variety, it allowed inner intrigue and violence. Tiamat and the heads of the Senate were not
the supposedly Caine appointed chosen. They were first among equals, and thus could be
deposed or replaced while the system would still be going on. Tiamat herself was only
menaced few times during these periods, and indeed the infighting did not even started until
decades had passed after the destruction of Carthage, but soon it would start to get more
serious. The fight for control about one region or other was fought in Rome through intrigues
and assassination, slander and court rather than open fighting. Tiamat and the founding
fathers of Rome preferred not to intervene in the first squabbles, but it was just one century
until factions started to form and there were open challenges to their leadership.

The challenges, with just the outer menace of Mithras, soon just turned to open civil war, and
at the end Tiamat and Sybil emerged in triumph, deciding to undercut the freedom that the
kindred had to control human resources, centralizing it more in a single empire that Tiamat
herself could control directly. Still, many, including the founder Beshter, felt disappointed in
the measure, finding it treason to the original reasons the whole thing had been organized for.
Only twice from there the leadership would be menaced in those four centuries, and both
times Tiamat would stand in triumph.

Still, the triumphs of the Roman Empire augmented the paranoia of the remaining
antediluvian. Some had disappeared during the Ventrue Empire, but at the death in so little
time of 3 of their ranks in the last millennia (Ventrue, Brujah, Set), most of them except
Lasombra and Cappadocian, who had a clear treaty and understanding with Rome, and
Tzimisce who while an Enemy of Rome was protected by his own clan and by tribes and
fortresses the Romans could not conquer before their fall (although it was clear that Tzimisce
was the next target in line for Tiamat and her allies).

If anything this time provoked was the spread and total acceptance of kindred among all
human population. All major cities had a healthy population of vampires and any city with a
population higher than 10000 would at least have a vampiric overseer that had allegiance for
the empire.

THE FALL OF ROME: 400– 500 AD

If something had hold Rome in its most vicious infighting was the fact that the Lasombra Sybil
and the Ventrue Tiamat had always holded their personal alliance for centuries. And by the
year 400 it was clear that a huge rift had opened between them for several issues.
The first issue was natural. The empire had been highly successful, and Tiamat each time had
felt more and more that its glory was just thanks to her. Her position was each time more
powerful and more autocratic, nearly deified in itself, and even Sybil resented from it.

The second issue was Christianity. The Judaic sect had started to expand from Palestine north
to Syria and Greece, and there it had taken the attention of the Lasombra. After knowing
about it orders were issued from Sicily to give maximum support to the new and fresh ideas,
and the new religion caught as wildfire in the lower classes during the first two centuries. And
its target were not just the humans… but the kindred itself as it adapted some of its original
Judaic myths to give a new explanation on the origin of the vampires, its nature as a curse, and
a whole explanation of the events of the first two cities.

The two antediluvians that were at hand and that had known Caine would not only comment
upon it, but were actively promoting the new beliefs, and the first of the 4th generation could
only look at it with scorn and bewilderment, at first. Of course Ontai and Japheth embraced in
public the new ideology and confirmed that the stories of Nod were true, but also soon
Beshter and Samiel also did. But the Ventrue did not. Mithras was in open scorn of such a
story, and did not hesitate to punish those who propagated them in his lands. And Tiamat also
did feel likewise.

What at first was a disagreement soon become a major point of contention, with Sybil and
Beshter fighting Cybele and Tiamat about adopting the religion as the new state religion.
Before anybody knew what happened, there was an open fight, this time with no quarter. Of
course, many would argue that it was Sybil’s own bid for power, or that the old council were
just too afraid or tired of Tiamat’s each time more absolute dominion, and that ideology had
nothing to do with it, but the very truth is that the schism grew harder and wider, and by the
middle of the fifth century Rome was continuously aflame.

Brujah and Gangrel overlords that had taken refuge during the centuries with wild tribes
descended with a vengeance on the once proud empire. City overlords perished after their
cities were besieged either by them, or conquered by another band of vampires from the
neighboring region, a fact that would have sent a reprisal from Rome and swift punishment,
but now went undisturbed.

The empire was soon in flames, the old Council torn with the crudest infighting, old allies
turning in the bitterest enemies.

Some left before it was too late. Besther, one of the founders, left Rome with Antonius (the
youngest Ventrue of the 4th generation) and enticing the Methuselah Tzimisce that he had met
in diplomatic missions to the Tzimisce holdings, to start a new Rome in Constantinople, subtly
preparing it to be the new Capital of the world after what they felt would be Rome’s collapse.

They were not wrong. Tiamat and Sybil destroyed each other, and with them Rome. The
Lasombra from Sicily moved to occupy southern Italy and the old Carthage, and all descended
in a brutal chaos as all the clans started fighting the spoils, each surviving major city turning
into an isolated barony in the hands of a single vampire powerful enough to control it. The
remaining methuselahs fled from Rome or were destroyed, and the 4th generation started to
take note of what their sires had done and started to hide and to prefer pulling strings from
behind the scenes, specially as Tiamat herself got diablerized by her own childe Marius.

All was set for Beshter and his new allies to create their new city and dominion, and they could
not only face Mithras and his Ventrue but also turn the eastern dominions to just flock for
their protection. But the west was clearly lost.

AFTER THE FALL: 500– 600 AD

- THE WEST:
The whole Roman system collapses like a castle of cards. Where there was peace and enforced
stability, all the city lords rose to proclaim full independence. Some for just greed, some to
avenge past deeds, or resentment against the imperial yoke. And some just of fear of the rest,
knowing fully that there would not be any imperial legion coming from Rome to save them.

The Kindred fell without direction, left to their own devices, while bands of Germanic tribes or
mercenaries, mainly led from Brujah, Gangrel and Ventrue were used to seize power all over
Gaul, Hispania, Italy and Africa.

Kingdoms rose and fell in a matter of centuries. Alliances formed and were betrayed in a
matter of years. Slowly, the communication between major cities fell and was discouraged to
better recognize and isolate newcomers and attackers, until the lord of each city turned into
the king of his own hill, paranoid for his unlife and his power.
Only the Toreador managed to build a stable area in the Aquitania where they dared to
collaborate with each other and repel enemies, but at the cost of restricting the other clans,
breaking totally the nature of the past organization. And again Sicily becomes fully an island of
Shadows, the Lasombra claiming the entire island again under their absolute control.

- THE EAST:
When news of the collapse of Rome, and the destruction of Tiamat, Sybil and half the senate
arrived, the triumvirate started to work.

Antonius fully kept the imperial systems, sending in very quick successions strike teams to
those who would swear alliance to them instead of Rome. The terrifying powers of the Dracon
and his tzimisce allies brought a new terror in the enemies of the triumvirate, specially
managed by such an expert strategist as Antonius. Mithras the Ventrue might have thought for
a moment that it was his chance to strike and expand to revive the old Empire, now nearly
forgotten, but he was met by the same and even improved tactics, and actually was defeated
soundly by the new Byzantine management, suffering great losses that he would come to
lament in the next century.

The brilliant victory against the eastern Ventrue convinced all the local eastern overlords to
swear allegiance to the new power… to find themselves forced to adopt invariably a
triumvirate power in each of their cities. Antonius and his allies having decided that leaving a
single ruler per city was a danger, and to keep at least in name three rules for city would either
avoid a revolt like it had in the West, or at least to give them a faction in their favor in case
they would have to retake those cities.

The success was such that at the end of the century Antonius started the capture of the cities
of Southern Italy, fully intent in slowly reclaim the empire and the imperial system.

As part of the new system, also, the Triumvirate decided, despite protests from the Dracon, to
adopt fully Christianity and to propagate and accept the creation myth that it proposed for the
Kindred, and soon all newly created vampires were systematically told such stories, that most
created in the last three centuries already believed as fact.

At the year 600, the advance of the Triumvirate and its style looked unstoppable, even cities in
the far southern coast of Spain falling and surrendering to the war parties of Antonius.

THE RETURN OF THE ASSAMITES: 600– 800 AD

In the beginnings of the VII century, a new power rose in the East and took everybody by
surprise. The clan of the Assamites that had been regarded as mysterious and nearly extinct
only sightings related to murders and destruction suddenly rose from the deserted lands of
Arabia and with the force of a new religion driving their mortal scions, advanced in a tied that
menaced to engulf everything at their wake.

Suddenly armies of well prepared Assamite assassins stroke in perfectly planned coups in the
cities of Syria, Palestine, Persia and Egypt, nearly wiping out all but the most powerful and
lucky vampires. The triumvirate rules of those cities fell nearly without resistance, at most just
managing to escape as they were besieged in their own cities by armies of shadowy assassins
that seemed to know everything about them. Some managed to flee to the north and the
west, some bent their knee to their new masters… most died on the onslaught.

No elder knew where and how the Assamite had massed such a large number of powerful
kindred under the nose of everybody, and only with a huge effort they could stop them. The
Triumvirate was the most successful after the first defeats, protecting the cities of Anatolia but
losing Syria, Palestine and Egypt. Mithras and his Ventrue were not that lucky. Most
slaughtered by the new power and just Mithras and a very few kindred managing to flee to
Europe, seeking haven with old allies and trying to carve a new dominion far from the setting
of his hardest personal defeat.

Antonius and his vampires managed to turn back several attempts in Anatolia and in Greece,
but the Assamites directed their attention west… conquering Africa with ease, invading Sicily
and finally invading Spain, invading the major cities and taking them.

Only through a huge effort the northernmost part of Spain resisted, and the Toreador and
Ventrue dominions in Aquitaine and Frankonia united to collaborate in pushing back and
defeating the attempts of invasion. Only because of the subversion of the Lasombra who had
‘converted’ (and would betray during the next three centuries) that the huge invasion was
stalled and slowly stabilized, the Assamite themselves starting to suffer some infighting
between the followers of the Islam and the followers of the Antediluvian, and the fact that the
European vampires had learnt to defend themselves against the assamite tactics.

It was clear for the West that if they wanted to survive a unified effort at the hands of a single
clan controlled by an antediluvian, they needed again a structure such as the one in
Constantinople or the Romans. But there was still much ill will originated during the age of
turmoil after the fall to produce anything of significance. Many would argue that if the
Assamite that took Hispania had not been too lenient accepting other clans, or if a civil war
had not erupted back in Damascus among the two main factions of the clan, a second push
would have shattered the French and the Italian cities.

Still, even when Antonius and his war parties had stopped the assamite clan, the hard defeats
and the loss of all the previously regained territory shattered his prestige in the Triumvirate.
Not only at the south, but also at the north the Tzimisce dominions had learnt to play the
game and had helped the tribes to found the Bulgarian Empire, which effectively started to
attack the northern frontier. In a wasteful power struggle from the Dracon to prevail over
Antonius not only as the most powerful influence, but also over the love of Beshter, now called
Michael, a deadly struggle begin.

The last of the movements of Antonius in this struggle, and the one that would lead to his
destruction would be his attempt to subvert the religious base that Dracon had established for
Constantinople’s kine and kindred: A mix of his own pagan beliefs with the orthodoxy that
Michael proposed. While Michael remained neutral, a bitter theological conflict erupted, and
with it soon a Civil war that actually managed to make the triumvirate lose any control of the
southern Italian cities, falling at the hands of the each time better established Lasombra.
At the end a full scaled civil war between kindred and kine erupted, and only when Michael
was convinced that things had gone way too far the Toreador intervened and tipped the
balance in favor of the Dracon. A council was held and the older childe of Antonius accepted to
betray his sire. Diablerie was not approved and with the treason Caius controlled the Ventrue
family, finally reestablishing the peace in the capital of the Empire.

Still, much was to be done. Nearly half of the kindred in the city had perished in the civil war.
The frontier with the Assamite was in shambles, and a new effort would be needed to avoid
any future attempts of siege, and also Tzimisce and European Germanic overlords looked at
the Balkans dreaming of carving new domains for themselves and their allies. New kindred had
to be created to turn back the tide and reestablish the glory of the new Eastern Empire.
