Island: Gavrinis
ABOUT
The project “Traces” is composed of three phases. In the initial phase of the
project, the sculptor and the organizer of the project, Hüseyin Arda made
preparatory visits to the island during 2008. The following two phases will
take place respectively in April and May 2009. Throughout April, in their
temporary studios, the artists will carry out artistic production. Finally, on the
1st of May 2009, the grand exhibition will be on display on the distinctive
“Open Air Gallery” of the island of Gavrinis.
And finally, turning the project “Traces” into an annual event for
the coming years.

ARTISTS
Hüseyin Arda
The sculptor Hüseyin Arda was born in Eskisehir, Turkey in 1969. In
the early 1990s, right at the time of political and social turmoil in Berlin after
German unification, he became involved in the Artists' Initiative Tacheles,
taking an active role in the Art House project. Since 1992, Arda has been
sculpting with metal and developing urban art projects.
As a well-known urban metal sculptor, Arda carried out several
successful urban art projects like “Silence”, “Anima Ferri”, and “Wörter für
Berlin”. His sculptures have been shown in a number of exhibitions
throughout Germany. Since spring 2008, Arda has been actively organizing
and directing several performances, workshops and exhibitions at his
workplace at Tacheles. At the Arda Metallwerkstatt, based in Berlin, his
exhibitions are drawing more than 300.000 visitors per year. In the course of
the next few years, he is planning to have a series of exhibitions throughout
Europe. Arda frequently appears on TV, radio, and in the print media.
Adnan Kalkancı
The painter Adnan Kalkancı was born in Kars, Turkey, in 1958. He is a
graduate from Ankara Art Academy. His paintings have been shown in Berlin,
Paris, Prague and Warsaw. Last year, in 2008, Kalkancı was involved in an
art exhibition designed by Christies Organization. He is currently working as
one of the artists involved in the project “Anima Ferrea” that has been
organized by Hüseyin Arda. Within Arda Metallwerkstatt, he is also running
a gallery called Mendo, where Kalkancı hosts guest artists from different
countries.
Rob Miller
An Australian wood sculptor, Rob Miller was born in 1970. He graduated from
Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne in Fine Arts and Sculpture. In
Australia he worked with numerous international artists, predominantly from
Zimbabwe, where he was involved with the Chapungu Gallery, which is now in
charge of the prestigious Helen Lempriere Award. In August 2008, he joined
the artist collective “Anima Ferrea”.
