Description:

 Studying the music of Brazil with vocabulary words and notes.

Objectives:

 Expanding student’s knowledge on music of a diverse culture like Brazil.


 Introducing students to a new style of music and rhythms.

Standards Met:

 6.8.2 Describe the uses of the elements of music in aural examples representing diverse
genres and cultures.
 6.12.1 Demonstrate extensive knowledge of technical vocabulary of elements of music in
analyzing aural examples.
 6.3.1 Identify simple elements of music
Lesson Introduction:

 Start by handing out the vocabulary list to all the students.


 Once all the sheets are pasted out, catch the student’s attention by asking them what kind
of music they like to listen to?
 Try and get all the students involved in this discussion
 Slowly work in the music of Brazil, ask them what they think about it.

Step-by-Step Procedure:

 Once the class starts the discussion of the music of Brazil and what they think about it, I
will hand out the informational/ fact handout to all the students.
 As a class I will review the notes and ask them if they have questions concerning what
we just talked about.
 After all questions are answered I will play some Brazilian music.
 I will have students write down what they thought of the music and how they felt about it,
followed by a discussion.
 Then I will show them some of the instruments the Brazilians used and types of music
styles by a power point.
 Have a discussion about the instruments and how they are different from the music they
listen to.
 When we are finished with the conversations I will let the students in groups of three or
four work on their vocabulary list together using dictionaries, the informational/ fact
paper and any other sources they need.
 When they complete their vocabulary list, I will pass out the scramble work sheet; where
they will take it home and work on it as homework

Review Notes:

 Make sure that the students have a good understanding about the Brazilian music and
the items we discussed as a class.

Homework/Assessment:

 Scramble work sheet

Evaluation:

 Collect all vocabulary work sheets and make sure definitions are correct.
 Have students return the scramble worksheet the following day and check for accuracy.
