2. Load Sense Margin Setting

Note: The load sense margin setting has been preset at the factory. Changing the margin setting can
cause issues with the speed and power of the hydraulic system. Although the pump margin can easily
be checked and is a good troubleshooting tool, the margin should only be adjusted if the results of this
test shows settings outside of the acceptable range. Both of the test methods described below are only
for 580SN with heavy lift, 580SN WT, and 590SN models. Do not attempt these methods with other
Case TLB models.
Direct Measurement Method: For users equipped with an electronic pressure measurement device such
as the Case Digital Pressure and Temperature Analyzer Kit (see Bulletin ST04-01, 2004) the pump margin
can be measured directly:

a. Connect a pressure gauge capable of 5000 psi (345 bar) to the diagnostic fitting on the end of
the attenuator hose. The transducer should be connected to Channel 1 of the
instrumentation.
b. Connect a second gauge capable of 5000 psi (345 bar) to the load sense diagnostic fitting at the
side of the heavy lift valve. Connect this transducer cable to Channel 2 of the
instrumentation
c. Set the instrumentation to display the pressure differential between the two channels of data.
d. For machines with mechanical controls, meter the stabilizer control to load the engine and
warm the machine to 120 deg F (50 deg C) when measured at the reservoir. For machines
with pilot controls, warm the machine by holding one function at stall and operating
another function.
e. Once the machine reaches temperature set the throttle to 2000 rpm.
 For pilot control machines: allow the machine to remain at standby. The pump will
regulate to provide flow across the minimum flushing valve at the pump margin. Read
the differential pressure from the pressure analyzer tool. This is the pump margin. The
acceptable range for pump margin is 275-305 psi (19-21 bar).
 For mechanical control machines: Stall a function. Stabilizer, extendahoe, or loader lift
are to be used since these sections are not protected by circuit relief valves that could
cause an incorrect reading. Read the pressure differential from the pressure analyzer
tool. This is the pump margin. The acceptable range for pump margin is 275-305 psi
(19-21 bar).
f. If the load sense margin is not within specification the setting can be adjusted be loosening the
lock nut at the top of the load sense compensator and adjusting the set screw. Tightening
the set screw increases the margin setting and loosening the set screw decreases the pump
margin.

Single Gauge Method: For users with limited instrumentation, the pump margin can be checked using
only a single gauge.

a. For machines with mechanical controls, meter the stabilizer control to load the engine and
warm the machine to 120 deg F (50 deg C) when measured at the reservoir. For machines
with pilot controls, warm the machine by holding one function at stall and operating
another function.
b. Remove the load sense hose tube from the load sense compensator. Plug the open end of the
tube.
c. Provide a drain pan or bucket for the open port at the load sense compensator to drain into. If
desired, a hose may be added to the end open port to direct the flow of oil into the
container.
d. Connect a pressure gauge capable of 500 psi (35 bar) to the end of the attenuator hose.
e. Set the throttle to 2000 rpm. Stabilizer, extendahoe, or loader lift are to be used since these
sections are not protected by circuit relief valves that could cause an incorrect reading. The
pressure displayed on the pressure gauge is the pump margin. The acceptable range for
pump margin is 275-305 psi (19-21 bar).
f. If the load sense margin is not within specification the setting can be adjusted be loosening the
lock nut at the top of the load sense compensator and adjusting the set screw. Tightening
the set screw increases the margin setting and loosening the set screw decreases the pump
margin.

3. Normal and Heavy Lift Pressure Setting

580SN without Heavy Lift Option: For this model, the maximum pressure setting of the machine is
controlled by the pressure compensator at the pump.

a. Connect a gauge capable of 5000 psi (345 bar) to the end of the attenuator hose.
b. For machines with mechanical controls, meter the stabilizer control to load the engine and
warm the machine to 120 deg F (50 deg C) when measured at the reservoir. For machines
with pilot controls, warm the machine by holding one function at stall and operating
another function.
c. Once the machine has reached temperature, stall a single function. Stabilizer, extendahoe, or
loader lift are to be used since these sections are not protected by circuit relief valves that
could cause an incorrect reading. Read the system pressure on the gauge. The acceptable
pressure range for this model is 3400-3500 psi (234 to 341 bar).
d. If the system pressure is not within specification the setting can be adjusted be loosening the
lock nut at the top of the pressure compensator and adjusting the set screw. Tightening the
set screw increases the pressure setting and loosening the set screw decreases the pressure
setting.

580SN with Heavy Lift, 580SN WT, 590SN: For these models the normal system pressure and heavy lift
pressure are controlled by relief valves in the heavy lift valve manifold. Note: If the margin is to be
checked or adjusted, complete that adjustment before setting the system pressure. Adjusing the margin
after setting the system pressure will cause the system pressure settings to change.

installed in machine
Will cause serious performance issues.
a. Connect a gauge capable of 5000 psi (345 bar) to the end of the attenuator hose.
b. For machines with mechanical controls, meter the stabilizer control to load the engine and
warm the machine to 120 deg F (50 deg C) when measured at the reservoir. For machines
with pilot controls, warm the machine by holding one function at stall and operating
another function.
c. Activate the power lift feature and stall a single function. For mechanical control machines
extendahoe or stabilizer are to be used since these sections are not protected by circuit
relief valves that could cause an incorrect reading. For pilot control machines stall
extendahoe. If if extendahoe is not available use backhoe bucket. The stabilizer section is
not to be used on pilot control machines. Read the Power Lift pressure on the gauge. See
the chart below for the acceptable Power Lift pressure range.
d. If the pressure needs to be adjusted, loosen the jamnut on relief valve 2 (RV2) and adjust the set
screw. Tightening the set screw increases the pressure setting and loosening the set screw
decreases the pressure setting.
e. Press the switch to return the machine to normal pressure mode. Stall a single function.
Extendahoe, stabilizer (mechanical controls only) or loader lift are to be used since these
sections are not protected by circuit relief valves that could cause an incorrect reading.
Read the system pressure on the gauge. See the chart below for the acceptable system
pressure range.
f. If the normal system pressure needs to be adjusted, loosen the jamnut on relief valve 1 (RV1)
and adjust the set screw. Tightening the set screw increases the pressure setting and
loosening the set screw decreases the pressure setting.

4. Torque Control Adjustment

Setup: For this testing, the machine will see pressure of at least 3200 psi. An OEM1239 (CAS10280) 75
GPM flowmeter will be used. If the flowmeter is equipped with pipe thread connections, these adapter
fittings will need to be removed and replaced with ORFS connections (p/n 87303844). Also, hoses with a
minimum 4000 psi (275 bar) working pressure will need to be used. It is recommended that the hoses
be made 8 to 12 ft long with #16 female ORFS (1 7/16-12) ends.

580SN, 580SN WT, 590SN with Mechanical Controls

a. Remove the tee from the pressure outlet at the rear of the rear of the pump and install a plug
9847694 in the open end of the tee and tighten.
b. Attach one end of one of the test hoses to the adapter fitting at the pressure outlet of the pump.
The other end of this test hose shoule be connected to the inlet port of the test flowmeter
c. Remove the loader valve return hose from the tee at the rear of the filter. Install a plug in the
end of the return hose and tighten.
d. Connect the end of the second test hose at the open port the loader hose was removed from.
The opposite end of this hose must be connected to the outlet of the service flowmeter.
e. Warm the machine to 120 deg F (50 deg C). To warm the machine start the engine and set the
throttle to 2000 rpm. Adjust the load valve at the service flowmeter to 2500 to 3000 psi.
Allow the machine to run in this condition until the temperature is reached.
f. Stop the engine.
g. Remove the torque control supply tube from the pump.
h. Cap the open adapter fitting at the variable relief valve on the top of the pump using 574342.

f. Remove the plug from the pressure gauge port at the top rear of the pump.
g. Install a tee 84151565 in the gauge port at the top of the pump.
h. Remove the tube that connects the load sense compensator to the heavy lift valve. Cap the
open connection at the heavy lift valve.
i. Connect a hose from the tee at the gauge port of the pump to the open port at the LS
compensator. The hose needs to have #6 ORFS female ends and be rated to 4000 psi (275
bar)
k. Connect a diagnostic fitting 190119A1 at the available port on the gauge port tee.
l. Warm the machine to 120 deg F (50 deg C). To warm the machine start the engine and set the
throttle to 2000 rpm. Adjust the load valve at the service flowmeter to 2500 to 3000 psi.
Allow the machine to run in this condition until the temperature is reached.
m. Stop the engine.
n. Connect a gauge capable of 500 psi (35 bar) to the diagnostic fitting installed at the tee in the
gauge port of the pump.
j. Remove the torque control supply tube from the pump.
k. Cap the open adapter fitting at the variable relief valve.
l. Connect a hose from the open port at the torque control compensator and run into the fill neck
of the hydraulic reservoir.

Checking Torque Control: All models 580SN, 580SN WT, 590SN

a. Unscrew the load valve on the service flowmeter to the lowest setting.
b. Start the engine and set to 2000 rpm.
c. Increase the load on the service flowmeter until the flow has dropped to 5 gpm (19 l/min).
d. Read the pressure on the 500 psi gauge. This is the torque compensator margin setting. The
acceptable range for all models is 245-275 psi (17-19 bar).
e. If the pressure must be adjusted, loosen the locknut on the torque control compensator and
adjust the setscrew. Tightening the set screw increases the pressure setting and loosening
the set screw decreases the pressure setting.
f. Stop the engine
g. After the torque control compensator pressure has been adjusted correctly, remove the hose
that connects the compensator to the hydraulic reservoir. Reinstall the cap on the hydraulic
reservoir.
h. Remove the cap that was installed at the torque control variable relief valve.
i. Re-install the torque control supply tube.
j. IMPORTANT!!! Remove the 500 psi gauge from the diagnostic fitting. The system will be tested
at higher pressures and the gauge will be damaged or destroyed if it is not removed for the
remainder of the test.
k. Start the engine and set to 2000 rpm.
l. Increase the load on the service flowmeter to read 2400 psi on the left gauge. Record the flow
rate on the flowmeter. For the 580SN and 580SN WT, the acceptable range is 33.0-35.7
gpm (125-135 l/min). For the 590SN, the acceptable range is 34.4-37.0 gpm (130-140 l/min).
m. If the correct flow rate is not shown on the flowmeter, the torque control variable relief valve
will need to be adjusted:
i. Remove the plastic cap from the torque control variable relief.
ii. Ensure the small lock nut is tight on the relief.
iii. Loosen the large locknut on the variable relief.
iv. Tighten the set screw to increase the flow on the flowmeter. Loosen the setscrew to
decrease the flow on the flowmeter
v. Retighten the large locknut on the variable relief.
vi. Check the flow on the flowmeter. Note that adjusting the torque control variable relief
may slightly change the pressure at the service flowmeter. Be sure to reset the load
to 2400 psi before checking the flow.
n. Check the temperature of the hydraulic oil in the reservoir. The oil should never be allowed to
rise over 175 deg F (79 deg C). If at any time the oil rises above this temperature, set the
load valve in the service flowmeter to its lowest setting and allow the oil to circulate and
cool before continuing test. This temperature should be checked every 5 minutes while
performing this test.
o. Once the flow at the 2400 psi load level is checked, the flow must be set at a higher level.
Increase the load at the service flowmeter to 3200 psi. The flow on the flowmeter should be
23.8 to 26.4 gpm (90-100 l/min) for the 580SN and 580SN WT and 25.1 to 27.7 gpm (95 to
105 l/min) for the 590SN.
p. If the correct value is not shown on the flowmeter for the higher load case, the torque control
variable relief valve will need to be adjusted (notice that the small locknut is used this time):
i. remove the plastic cap from the torque control variable relief.
ii. ensure the large lock nut is tight on the relief.
iii. loosen the small locknut on the variable relief.
iv. tighten the set screw to increase the flow on the flowmeter. Loosen the setscrew to
decrease the flow on the flowmeter
v. retighten the small locknut on the variable relief.
vi. Check the flow on the flowmeter. Note that adjusting the torque control variable relief
may slightly change the pressure at the service flowmeter. Be sure to reset the load
to 2400 psi before checking the flow.
q. Note that adjusting the set screw on the variable relief with either the large or small locknut will
slightly change the setting of the other. Repeat steps l. through p. making slight
adjsutments until the flow is correct at each load case.
r. Repeat the setup steps in reverse order to return the machine to working condition. Note that
any steps related to the torque control supply tube may be eliminated since the tube was
re-installed on an earlier testing step.
