Training Descriptions:
This course aims to provide the participants with a comprehensive knowledge and skills of to work with
different types of mechanical equipment and associated machine components, such as fluid flow
machinery, prime movers and power transmission equipment, with emphasis on physical principles and
clear technical reasoning.

Training Objectives:
By the end of the training, participants will be able to:
 State the working theory of each type of rotating machines
 Describe Fluid flow behavior in the machine.
 Identify the basic components of the machine.
 Understand the duties and requirements of efficient shaft sealing solutions and its application
criteria.
 Point out the major problems and troubleshooting methodology.
 Select the proper maintenance strategy for each failure mode.

DAY ONE:
PRE-TEST
Machine working theory and basic concepts
Physical quantities and measurement units
Basic fluid flow properties and characteristics
Fluid flow machinery: pumps and compressors
Prime movers: Heat engines, Electrical Motors, Hydraulic and pneumatic
DAY TWO:
Power transmission systems overview
Gears and gearboxes
Bearings, Shafts, and Seals
Flexible belt drives
Couplings and Alignment
Bearings.
Anti-friction bearings: types, lifetime, mounting, applications, related problems.
Plain and pad bearings, thrust bearings; operation, maintenance, incidents.
Fits and tolenrances
DAY THREE:
Lubrication
Purpose of lube roles
Types of oil and grease.

Application modes.
Coupling and Alignment.
Types of couplings, related problems.
Different methods of alignment using comparators, tolerances, practical aspects.
DAY FOUR:
Sealing Devices for Pumps and Compressors.
Mechanical pump seals, types, operation, related problems. Installation, geometrical
checks.
Other seals for positive displacement pumps and reciprocating compressors.
Rotors and Shafts.
Balancing: eccentricity, tolerances.
Assembling on shaft: effect on balancing.
Geometrical shaft controls.
DAY FIVE:
Troubleshooting and maintenance
 Internal leakages. Unbalancing. Wear and ruptures, vibration.
 Major failure modes: Fatigue, wear and tear.
 Maintenance strategy
 Oil sample analysis
 Vibration and condition monitoring
 Infra-red thermography
