DRILLED SHAFT FOUNDATION FOR BRIDGES

AXIAL COMPRESSION:
 The factored axial compression resistance for a single shaft is computed as (10.8.3.5):
𝑅 =𝜙 𝑅 +𝜙 𝑅
𝜙 = Resistance factor for tip resistance (Table 10.5.5.2.4-1)
𝑅 = Nominal shaft tip resistance (𝑘𝑖𝑝𝑠)
𝜙 = Resistance factor for side resistance (Table 10.5.5.2.4-1)
𝑅 = Nominal shaft side resistance (𝑘𝑖𝑝𝑠)

 Nominal shaft tip resistance, 𝑅 , is computed as:

𝑅 =𝑞 𝐴
𝑞 = Unit tip resistance (𝑘𝑠𝑓)
𝐴 = Cross-section area of shaft tip (𝑓𝑡. )
= 𝜋𝐷 ⁄4
𝐷 = Diameter of the shaft (𝑓𝑡.)

 Nominal shaft side resistance, 𝑅 , is computed as:

𝑅 =𝑞 𝐴
𝑞 = Unit side resistance (𝑘𝑠𝑓)
𝐴 = Side surface area of shaft (𝑓𝑡. )
= 𝜋𝐷𝐿
𝐿 = Effective length of shaft (𝑓𝑡.)
= Total shaft length minus 5𝑓𝑡. for shafts in cohesive (clay) soils (𝑓𝑡.)
= Total shaft length for shafts in cohesionless (sands) soils (𝑓𝑡.)

 For shafts in COHESIVE (clay) soils, the top 5 𝑓𝑡. of the shaft do not contribute to side
resistance.
 For shaft groups in COHESIVE (clay) soils, the nominal bearing resistance of the shaft
group is the lesser of:
 The sum of the individual nominal resistances of each shaft, or
 The nominal block resistance of the shaft group.
 Group resistance factors are given in Table 10.5.5.2.4-1
 When the resistance is calculated based on individual pile resistance, use
the resistance factors for a single pile.

 For shaft is COHESIONLESS (sands) soils the individual nominal resistance of each shaft
in the group is adjusted by the reduction factor 𝜂 given in Table 10.8.3.6.3-1.
 For intermediate spacings, use linear interpolation to determine the reduction
factor.

UPLIFT RESISTANCE:

 The factored uplift resistance of a SINGLE straight-sided shaft is based on skin

resistance:
𝑅 =𝜙 𝑅
𝜙 = Uplift resistance factor (Table 10.5.5.2.4-1)

 The factored uplift resistance of a belled shaft in cohesive soil, , is computed as:
𝑅 =𝜙 𝑅
𝑅 = Nominal belled shaft uplift resistance (𝑘𝑖𝑝𝑠)
 Nominal belled shaft uplift resistance, 𝑅 , is computed as:
𝑅 =𝑞 𝐴
𝐴 = 𝜋 𝐷 − 𝐷 ⁄4 (𝑓𝑡. )
𝐷 = Diameter of the bell (𝑓𝑡.)
𝐷 = Diameter of the shaft (𝑓𝑡.)
 The factored uplift resistance of a GROUP of shafts is based on skin resistance:
𝑅 =𝜙 𝑅
𝜙 = Group uplift resistance factor (Table 10.5.5.2.4-1)
𝑃 = Group uplift resistance factor (Table 10.5.5.2.4-1)

 Nominal uplift resistance, 𝑅 , is the lesser of:

 The sum of individual pile uplift resistance, and
 The uplift resistance of the pile group considered as a block.
