 Objective:
Training how calculate the moisture content.
Understanding how can we calculate it.
To know the advantage of this experiment.

Theory:

Definition:

Then this experiment uses to calculate the

moisture content in the laboratory by practice and ability to
calculate it.

Uses:

To take good statement when we state to built or to

establish foundation.

To know the amount of saturation in soil.

To find the properates of soil.

Sample Identification:
We need in this experimen amount of wet soil (one
sample).

Equipment:

Container
( Moisture can).
These are available in various size.
Oven with temperature control.( 105°-110°).
This temperature (we should avoid higher temperature)
to save the organic material from burning.

Procedure:
Determine the weight of the empty moisture can plus
it’s cap (W1), and also record the can number.

Place a sample of representative moist soil in the

can. Close the can with it’s cap to avoid loss of moisture.

Determine the combined weight of the closed can

and wet soil (W2).

Remove the cap from the top of the can and place it
on the bottom (of the can).

Put the can in the oven for drying the soil ti a

constant weight. About 24 hours of drying is enough in
most cases.

Determine the combined weight of the dry soil

sample plus the can and it’s cap(W3).

Result & analysis:

Calculation:
weight of water present in a given soil mass
W= .
weight of dry soil
W2 – W3
= . x100% =( Ww/ Wsd)x100%
W3—W1

~W(container) = Wc = 32.51 g
~W(container+soil) = Wc s =128.21 g
~W(container+dry soil) = Wc sd = 119.62 g
~W(water) = Ww =Wc s – Wc sd = 128.21 – 119.62 = 8.59 g.
~W(soil)= Ws = Wc s – Wc = 95.7 g .

~ Wsd = Wc sd – Wc =119.62- 32.51= 87.11g.

~~W(contant) =W (%) = (Ww/Wds)x100% =( 8.59/87.11)x100%
=(9.9 %).

Discussion & Conclusion:

Discuss the result:
We can see that result. It’s very clear with using
mathematical calculation. You can observe when organic
soil ▲ swelling ▲ saturation ▲.

Errors
:
We can see error in weight.

We can see error in drying when ( T ) made very

high then the organic material decrese.

We can see error in weight of cotainer when it not

clean & dry.

importment:
Now We can see the important of water content in
many things : building ,foundation & on the statment to
use it in building…

.
