 Objective:
 To determine thegrain-size distribution of soil.
To paint relation between finer(%) & grain-size.

Theory:
Uniformity coefficient = Cu=(D60/D10).
Coefficient of gradation=Cc=((D30)2/(D60xD10)).

Definition:

This expeirment uses to find propartes of soil

(grain-size). This experiment is very important so it needs

to accuratation.

Uses:

To find the properates of soil.

To find grain-size effect.

To know the percentage of kind of soil ( clay, silt &

gravel).

Sample Identification:
We need in this experiment tools to mix the soil.

Amount of soil & container.

Sieving & amount of water to wash it.

Equipment:

Container
( Moisture can).
These are available in various size.
Tray carrying tle soil and to mix ihe soil on it.
Tooles to mix & take amount of soil.
Sievings & pan.
A Basin to wash the soil.
Oven with temperature control.( 105°-110°).
This temperature (we should avoid higher temperature)
to save the organic material from burning.
A Brush to removed the remaines soil on the
sieving.
Shaker to complete sieving.
A Scale to weight the dry soil.

Procedure:
Take amount of soil by divide the soil to (4) partes
then take one & divide it to (4) partes .(Then continue this
procedure in order to you sure it is mixed).

Then take the amount by divide it to half & weight it

by electronic scale.

Put coarse sieving over the fine sieving to save the

sieving wire.

after that, we should be to wash it by water on the

basin ( you should be sured that clay &silt is removed).

when we sure that soil does’nt have clay &silt , put it

in the oven until it is dryed.

Put it(dry soil) on the sieving & put the cover. Put
there on the shaker to deposition it (dry soil).

after that , weight all amount of soil on all sieving &

write it with there sierving-size.(you should be using the
brush to remove the soils on the sieving).

• Uniformity coefficient = Cu=(D60/D10).

• Coefficient of gradation=Cc=((D30)2/(D60xD10))
• From graph Cu= (0.30/0.098) = 3.1
• Cc= ((0.11)2/(0.30 x 0.098)) = 0.41
Then isn’t coarse graind ( fine graind).

Discussion & Conclusion:

Discuss the result:
We can see now the relation between finer (%) & size of
grain ( minus slope curve).

Errors :
We can see error in weight after or before
experiment.

We can see error in drying when ( T ) made very

high then the organic material decrese.

We can see error in weight of cotainer when it not

clean & dry.

Error in mixed of soil.

Error in wash the soil (it has clay &silt).

importment:

Now We can see the important of know the grain-size in

foundation & structure because of it’s properates.
