What is dierent about Spanish Pop? It breathes. politics
Spanish Pop art and new figurative painting of the 1960s derive
of their interest from this fact, and also some of their
je problems. Xs political nature clearly distinguishes
Spanish Pop art from both Anglo-Saxon models American and
British - but also, though pesbaps to a lesser exten, fram the
reception of Pop in continental Europe, Abow al, the establish
ment of a Pop sensibility in Spain needs ta be seen asthe conse
quence of a comples movemen t from the
earlier development of pop in Britain or the United States. 1 will
here attempt to account for some of the distinctive features of
Spanish Pop by reference tothe critical debates surrounding art
prodition in Valencia in the early 1980s. OF pacticular impor
tance to this debate is the work of the proto-Pop printmaking
group Estampa Popular de Valenciaand that of Equipo Crénica,
4 team founded at around the same time by Ratzel Solbes and
Manuel Valdés, who were also members ofthat group.
‘Most obviously when Pop arrived in Spain around 1964, it had
ebsewshore already become a fully-fledged art movement sith a
range of stylistic options and strategies to its name. Put more
bluntly, Pop arrived in Spain prepackaged, rather than grossing
there. Furthermore; its impact was largely limited to a small
part of the Spanish act scene, in particular the young artists of
Valencia «a city that was not traditionally considered tobe the
hotbed of new radicalism. So perhaps it shouldn't come as a
surprise that in 1964, when Robert Rauschenberg received the
sgrana! prize atthe Venice Biennale, one Spanish critic lamented,
‘ve know that many people dislike Spop” art’ and that ‘Marxist
and nostalgic erties have joined forces in defence against the
Jewsish-bourgeois. invasion of an art that represents. North
American soviety”” And the Valencian eritie Vicente Aguilera
Cetnia key player on the Spanish art scene, commented in 1970
that ‘in Spain there have been certain developments mimicking
an imported “pop”, though always in a timid and superficial
fashion. Such disdain suggests that the very critic who had
earlier introduced generations of isolated Spanish artists to the

el “pop” americano fuera un modelo a seguir por el arte de su

barata, poco soisticada eindeseable cultura popular -“law"- de
Estados Unidos, desvelan interrogantesinteresantes si tenemos

hhave the familiar ring of old-world snobbery, defending high
uropcan values agains the cheap, brash and thoroughly unsle-
sirable popular‘low culture of the USA,but they do raise inter-
esting questions ashen they come from team of Spanish pop
artists. How ean their view of pop be reconciled with their prac
tice? Ho, if not by reference wo international models, was the
new paintingin Spain explained and understood?
Inthe carly 1960s, not enly art crities and historians but also,
crucially young artists considered themselves to be ata turning
point, Rafaet Solbes and Manuel Valdés described the mood
that led to the formation of Eguipo Crénica as" cultural and
ideological crisis for both of us. The perspectives of the various
“aronds” didnt satisfy uss instead we felt the need to book fora
new artistic altemative, both on a pessonaf fevel and within the
panorama of Spanish avant-garde art?” ‘The cause of this‘risis
was the end of informalison which had dominated the Spanish
att scene since the midfitties. Depending on where one looks,
this ‘exhaustion’ of one style and ‘need for a new one, we
anchored to the situation in Spain, to European developments or
indeed seen as having clear parallels in America.’ However,
‘was invariably intellectuatised as the product of the intemal
dynamics of art by means of which rival avant-garde move

the succession of isms’ privileged the work of art as an
auonomous aesthetic abject and was hence complicit in its
sienation. Bt it was precisely with the arsval of pop oF new

of art broke down, Pierte Restany, the voice of the Nouveaux
