COURSE OBJECTIVE
Bio-inspired materials are synthetic materials
whose structure, properties or functions mimic
those of natural materials or living matter.
Examples of bio-inspired materials are light-
harvesting photonic materials that mimic
photosynthesis, structural composites that
imitate the structure of nacre, and metal
actuators inspired by the movements of
jellyfish. Nature achieves with a minimum of
material expenditure the efficient design.
The major focus of the workshop is to provide
theoretical foundation and practice using
various case studies that will lead to better
understanding of bio-inspired materials and
their application to various solid mechanics
problems.
The vital role of bio-inspired and bio-
mimicking concepts in the technological
trends towards the sustainability is a key factor
for all type of interdisciplinary research, such
as biomedical, electronics, composites,
ceramics, to name a few.
This workshop is intended for students,
faculty, researchers and others to increase the
awareness on current developments in the
application of bio-inspired materials.

INTERNATIONAL EXPERT
Prof. Arunachalam M. “Raj”
Rajendran serves as Chair and
professor for the Mechanical
Engineering Department at the
University of Mississippi (Ole
Miss), Oxford, Mississippi, USA.
Prior to joining Ole Miss, he served the U.S. Army
Research Office (ARO), RTP, NC as Chief Scientist
for the Engineering Sciences Directorate in 2000-
2008. He has worked in the US Army Research
Laboratory during 1992-2008. While in ARO, Dr.
Rajendran chaired several prestigious technical
panels for Pentagon and Department of Energy.
Currently, Dr. Rajendran is serving in a 9-
member review panel for the International Space
Station (ISS) US National Laboratory (ISS-USNL).
He is also one of the 3 external panel members who
evaluate the in-house basic research program of the
U.S Army’s Corp of Engineers Laboratories.
Dr. Rajendran is a Fellow of the American
Society of Mechanical Engineers (1994), Fellow of
the Society of Engineering Science (2012),
Distinguished Fellow of ICCES, and Associate
Fellow of American Institute for Aeronautics and
Astronautics, and Emeritus Fellow of the U.S. Army
Research Laboratory (2000). He is the receiver of
the Eric Reissner Medal (2007), and Life Time
Achievement award (2011).
He has published over 150 articles, edited 10
books and major conference proceedings, and
chaired over 50 international conferences and
symposiums. Dr. Rajendran also had given invited
talks at over 50 US universities around the world.
Dr. Rajendran obtained his M.Tech
(Aeronautics) from IIT/Kanpur and PhD
(Aeronautics and Astronautics) from the University
of Washington, Seattle, WA, USA.

ACCOMMODATION AND TRAVEL
Registered participants will be provided with free
boarding and lodging facilities on twin sharing
basis in the Visitors Block of the Institute on
first-come-first serve basis. The registration fee
covers registration kit and refreshments. TA and
DA will not be paid.
