Steam filters

for steam systems up to 8.6 bar g

The CSF16 high efficiency steam filter
for better quality steam
The Spirax Sarco CSF16 steam filter is designed to help remove both moisture and solid particles, such as
pipe scale and rust from the steam supply. It is an all austenitic stainless steel unit with a removable
sintered austenitic stainless steel element. A single closure nut allows for ease of maintenance,
while a cleanable element ensures optimum efficiency and prolonged life. The main use of the
CSF16 is to clean up factory or plant steam to reduce levels of contamination,
such as boiler feed chemicals carried over from
the boiler off take, so that the end product
is not adversely affected. Air vent connection.

Available types
Available in a range of
sizes from ¼" to 3", the
CSF16 can be fitted with
either a 1, 5 or 25 micron
absolute rated element. Sintered austenitic
stainless steel element
allows effective cleaning.
While the standard 5 micron
element will remove 95%
of all particles larger than
2 microns, a 1 micron
element will give a filtration
efficiency of greater than
99 % against 0.1 micron Austenitic stainless steel
particles. body for long life.

How the CSF16 works
The most basic method of contaminant removal in fluids is by 'retention' i.e. solids
larger than a hole size in a filter medium are mechanically retained on the upstream
surface or trapped within the hole. This is put to good effect in strainers, however a
strainer screen will only retain some particles, long, thin particles can still pass
through the holes. To overcome this we effectively need a succession of strainer
screens where the screens are staggered.
The majority of the particles are retained on the surface of the filter, but long thin particles can also be captured by the
depth of the filter. This method of retention is called inertial impaction. This is exactly how a sintered metal filter works.
The sintered process provides a suitable medium for such filtration. The sintered filter has a high porosity, more
than 50%, ensuring a high dirt holding capacity and good flow characteristics.

User benefits
• Cleanable element reduces total cost of ownership.
• Complete filter stations available from Spirax Sarco ensures
equipment compatibility.

• Filters conform to FDA 3-A accepted practice number 609-00.

• Effective moisture and particle separation for optimum processing efficiency.
• Compact design for ease of installation and maintenance.
Typical applications
The use of a steam filter to reduce the risk of product or process contamination spans many industries and
applications including:-
• Highly corrosive pure steam for sterilisation of products and equipment in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical
industries.
• Culinary steam for direct cooking of food products and sterilisation of food and beverage containers.
• Clean steam for humidification of clean rooms in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and electronic industries.
• Filtered / pure steam for autoclaves in the health care / pharmaceutical industries.
All CSF16 filters comply with US FDA 3-A accepted practice No 609-00 sanitary standard for the production of
culinary steam where absolute filtration down to 1 micron is required. (With a 1 micron element installed).

Production of culinary grade steam

In some food, dairy and beverage processes, steam is used for the direct heating or cooking of a product, or for
maintaining aseptic conditions in equipment. In these cases, the steam must be of a purity which will not
contaminate the product through odour, taint or undesirable additives.

In order to achieve this, a dry, clean saturated steam supply is required, free from incondensible gases and
filtered to 5 microns or better.

Sterilisers / Autoclaves
The steam supply to sterilisers and autoclaves in the pharmaceutical and
health care industries must be clean in order to prevent spotting or any other
type of contamination. National standards in many countries cover the design
and control of these devices, which in some cases also refer to steam purity
e.g. when factory steam is being used then it must be filtered.
