B. E. (Civil) Examination October-November 2018

BCEL506/ CEL 505/5115: Theory of Structures-I (GS/CBCS)
Time: Three Hours Max. Marks: 70
Note: Attempt all five questions. Part a, b, and c of each question is compulsory and carries 2, 2, and 3
marks respectively. Out of parts d and e (7 marks each) any one of them is to be attempted. Missing data, if
any, may be assumed suitably.
1. a. How is loading on a conjugate beam determined? CO1
b. Compare Moment area method with the conjugate beam method for deflection CO1
computation.
c. Explain second moment area theorem. CO1
d. Determine the slope and defection at point B of the cantilever beam fixed at ‘A’ as CO1
shown in figure 1 by the moment-area method.
e. Use conjugate beam method to determine slope and defection at point B of the CO1
cantilever beam (Figure 1).

2. a. State Maxwell’s theorem of reciprocal deflections. CO2

b. Explain in brief the principle of virtual work as applied to a deformable body. CO2
c. Compare method of real work in computing displacements with the virtual work CO2
method.
d. Use the virtual work method to determine the horizontal and vertical components of CO2
the deflection at joint B of the truss shown in figure 2. EA is constant. Take E=70 GPa
and A = 1000 mm2.
e. Determine the reactions and the force in each member of the truss shown in figure 3. CO3
EA is constant. Use any method.

for left half.
e. Determine the reactions and draw the shear and bending moment diagrams for the CO3
beam shown in figure 6 using the three-moment equation.
