− The X-Jet measurement can only be started with the compressed air and the vacuum
working.
− The X-Fall measurement can also be started without compressed air and/or vacuum.

3.2 Degree of Protection

− IP20

3.3 Emissions

C4.0025
CAUTION

Possibility of acoustic signals not being heard

Loud dispersing noises during X-Jet measurements
− Possible acoustic alarms and voice communication might not be heard.
• Consider the volume of the dispersing noise during X-Jet measurement
in relation to other acoustic signals in the work environment. Additional
visual signals may be used.

C5.0026
CAUTION

Hearing damage
A high sound level may be generated depending on the type of material, the set
pressure and the duration of the X-Jet measurement
− Excessive noise in terms of level and duration can cause impairments or
permanent damage to hearing.

3.9 Receptacle Volume

The receptacle volume (feed volume) depends on the sample material and on the measurement
mode.
− Feed volume: < 100 mg – 100 g

3.10 Feed Grain Size

The feed grain size depends on the sample material and on the measurement mode. By default,
the following feed grain sizes apply:
− Feed grain size X-Fall (standard): 10 µm – 3 mm
1) 2)

− Feed grain size X-Jet (standard):

3)
1 µm – 1.5 mm
− Feed grain size X-Flow (standard): 1 µm – 600 µm
4)

1)
The lower measurement limit depends on the material properties of the sample
(agglomeration).
2)
The upper measurement limit depends on the particle shape. The standard gravity nozzle
allows for a maximum upper limit of 5 mm for round, compact particles.
3)
The upper measurement limit depends on the particle shape. The standard dispersion nozzle
allows for a maximum upper limit of 3 mm for round, compact particles.
4)
The upper measurement limit depends on the density of the particles. 600 µm is a typical limit
3
for samples with a density of 2.5 g/cm .

14
Technical Data

The measurement range can be extended up to 8 mm with optional dispersing nozzles for X-Jet
and gravity nozzles for X-Fall. Further information are available in Chapter "X-Dry module" and
on the homepage http://www.retsch-technology.com/.

chamber except the mount (KS).
 When prompted by another dialogue box, insert the calibration reticle (KN) into the mount.
 Click [OK] to start the calibration.

By means of a dot pattern on the pane (KN2) of the calibration reticle, the CAMSIZER X2
programme now determines the magnification in pixel per inch for both cameras, respectively.
The newly determined values are compared with the values stored in the configuration file. The
calibration is considered okay, if the difference between the old and new values does not
exceed ± 0.5 %. If the deviation is greater, the adjustment should be optimised.

The result of the calibration is displayed in a dialogue box. Depending on the result, answer the
question of optimising the adjustment as follows:
 Click [No], if the calibration is OK.
 Click [Yes], if the calibration is NOT OK. The CAMSIZER X2 programme now stores the new
values in the configuration file. However, if the deviation turns out to be too high, the service
must be contacted. This is indicated by a corresponding dialogue box.

After the calibration, a calibration record can be printed. A corresponding dialogue box is
displayed.
 Click [No], if no calibration record is to be printed.
 Click [Yes], to print the calibration record. The "Print" window opens.

Finally, the CAMSIZER X2 programme requests the operator to remove the calibration reticle
again.

This Particle Size Analyser of the Retsch Technology GmbH is an opto-electronic laboratory
device for measuring and analysing particle size distributions and particle shape parameters.
The device is suitable for both, dry and wet analysis of various materials in a size range of 1 µm
to 8 mm. Wood fibres, synthetic fibres, plastics powders, food powders and granules, metal and
ore powders, pharmaceutical powders, granules and fine pellets, salt, sand, abrasives (medium-
size and small grit), detergent powders and raw materials, cement, sugar, coffee and many
other substances can be easily and quickly analysed

The Particle Size Analyser of the Retsch Technology GmbH is successfully deployed in almost
all areas of industry and research within the scope of quality control, especially where there are
high demands regarding easy operability, speed, precision and reproducibility.

40
Operating the Device

The device has a modular design and hence, depending on the configuration, allows for the
appropriate measurement method for the sample material:
− Gravity dispersion (X-Dry module with X-Fall cartridge)
− Compressed air dispersion (X-Dry module with X-Jet cartridge)
− Wet dispersion (X-Flow module)

Gravity dispersion:
The gravity dispersion measurement with the X-Fall cartridge inside the X-Dry module is
suitable for dry, free flowing materials with low content of fines. Depending on the selected
gravity nozzle this method is also suitable for coarser particles up to 8 mm. The sample material
is collected in a collecting tray after the measurement.

Compressed air dispersion:

The compressed air dispersion measurement with the X-Jet cartridge inside the X-Dry module is
suitable for dry, free flowing materials, or materials with a high content of fines, which may tend
to agglomerate. Depending on the selected dispersion nozzle this method is also suitable for
coarser particles up to 8 mm. Agglomerates can be dispersed by adjustable positive pressure
without destroying the particles themselves. The sample material is collected in a vacuum
cleaner after the measurement. A cyclone for sample recovery is available optionally.

Wet dispersion:
The wet dispersion measurement with the X-Flow module is suitable for fine materials, which
tend to agglomerate. Agglomerates can be broken up by ultrasonic sound. Furthermore, the wet
dispersion measurement is also suitable for cost-intensive materials as only a small quantity is
needed for the measurement. The dispersant including the sample material is collected in a
collecting vessel after the measurement.

Clean, lime-free water or ethanol is suitable as dispersant. The use of highly flammable
dispersants is permitted. However, in this case please note the additional comments in Chapter
"Wet measurement with highly flammable materials". The X-Flow module is suited to operate
with many dispersing agents, but if in doubt, please contact the service.

6.3 Measurement Methods

6.3.1 X-Fall Measurement Method

Fig. 25: X-Fall measurement principle

The X-Fall measurement method is one of the two possible dry dispersion measurements, in
which the sample material is fed into the hopper and transported via the vibration feed chute to
the sample chamber. The dosage of the material quantity is computer controlled using the
vibration intensity of the chute.

In the X-Fall measurement, the sample material falls from the chute into the stainless steel
hopper of the X-Fall cartridge, and then, accelerated by gravity, through the sample chamber
and the field of view of the cameras. The sample material is collected in the collecting tray of the
X-Dry module. Material loss and contamination are minimal and thus the sample can be reused
after the measurement for further analysis purposes.

45
Operating the Device

6.3.2 X-Jet Measurement Method

Fig. 26: X-Jet measurement principle

The X-Jet measurement method is a dry dispersion measurement using the same sample
supply as the X-Fall measurement method.

In the X-Jet measurement, the sample material is sucked in the stainless steel hopper of the X-
Jet cartridge by means of negative pressure. Subsequently, the sample is accelerated via
controllable compressed air through the dispersion nozzle, during which existing agglomerates
are broken up without destroying the particles themselves. The dispersed particles then fly
through the sample chamber and the field of view of the cameras, and are sucked off behind the
measuring window. The sample material is either collected in a vacuum cleaner, or optionally
deposited by means of a cyclone.

6.3.3 X-Flow Measurement Method

Fig. 27: X-Flow measurement principle

46
Operating the Device

In the wet dispersion measurement of the X-Flow measurement method, the sample material is
dispersed in a dispersant. The optimal dispersion parameters can be set via the pump speed
and the integrated ultrasonic sound.

In the X-Flow measurement, the sample material is either pre-dispersed beforehand in a

separate vessel, or added directly in the dispersing bath to the bubble-free dispersant, and
dispersed by the circulation evenly throughout the system. Existing agglomerates can be broken
up by means of ultrasonic sound. The filling level is continuously monitored during the
measurement by a sensor.

The circulation system is closed during the measurement, i.e. the same particles are
transported through the flow cell and the field of view of the cameras repeatedly and thus
measured several times. The duration of the measurement can be set in the CAMSIZER X2
programme. After the measurement, the sample material is drained together with the dispersant
via the outlet in a collecting vessel.

6.4 Change of Module

C11.0030
CAUTION

Danger of crushing
Improper change of modules
− During the change of modules (or cartridges) falling components can cause
injuries or bruises.
• Remove the compressed air hose, the cartridge, the collecting tray and

The sensor (DB2) permanently monitors the filling level and indicates with an "x" in the status
section (F1.3) whether the upper or lower filling level is reached. If the upper level is exceeded,
the excess dispersant flows off the overflow outlet (DB1). If the lower level falls below the limit,
bubble formation in the dispersant can occur due to the circulation and thus lead to
measurement errors.

6.6.3 Draining
The X-Flow module can only be drained via the software. The solenoid valve in the X-Flow
module is a "normally closed" valve. Therefore, it is closed when currentless and opens only
with applied voltage. If the basic device is switched off or the X-Flow module is separated from
the basic device, the dispersant including the sample material will remain in the module, as long
as no draining has occurred via the software.

54
Operating the Device

NOTICE The X-Flow module should always be drained and flushed when not used for longer
periods of time.

The drain of the X-Flow module is either performed automatically after the measurement or by
manual control.

Automatic drain:
The automatic drain is set in the task file for the wet measurement ( Chapter "X-Flow task
file".

Manual drain:
 Use the main menu function │Extras│X-Flow…│in the software to open the window for
manual control of the X-Flow module. Alternatively, the window can also be accessed by
clicking on the icon.
 Click on [Drain]. The solenoid valve opens for ten seconds, and the pump conveys the entire
dispersant through the outlet out of the circulation system.

Manual partial drain:

 Use the main menu function │Extras│X-Flow…│in the software to open the window for
manual control of the X-Flow module. Alternatively, the window can also be accessed by
clicking on the icon.
 Click on [Partial drain]. The solenoid valve opens for two seconds. During this time, the
dispersant is partly (approx. 200 ml) flowing by gravity through the outlet out of the
circulation system.

After drain or partial drain the solenoid valve closes again.

6.7 Wet Measurement with Highly Flammable Materials

Wet measurements with highly flammable dispersants are permissible with this device when
complying with specific precautionary measures.

When using highly flammable materials as dispersant, such as hexane, isopropanol, ethanol,
petrol, acetone or similar, it is to be assumed that the inside of the circulation system should be
classed as zone 0, i.e. a constantly present explosive mix.

Therefore it is necessary to prevent potentially explosive vapours during the measurement from
escaping from the X-Flow module and from entering areas in which the requisite ignition energy
is present.

It is therefore urgently recommended that the managing operator (employer) using the device
assesses the dangers that exist before using corresponding solvents, taking local conditions
into account, as part of a coherent explosion protection concept. If necessary, supplementary
organisational measures should be recorded in writing in an explosion protection document.

55
Operating the Device

This procedure is regulated in the EU under Articles 118 and 118a of Directive 89/391/EEC.
Please observe comparable provisions in other countries outside the EU.

The following must be verified with respect to the device:

− It is necessary to consider the durability of the hoses and O-rings (FFKM,
perfluoroelastomer), the pump (PTFE, polytetrafluoroethylene) and the dispersing bath
(stainless steel) when selecting the dispersant.
− The lid of the dispersing bath must be closed.
− Please note that the dispersant can heat up by the circulation in the system and the use
of the ultrasonic sound.
− Possible chemical reactions between the sample material and the dispersant must be
clarified in advance.
