Science and Technology III: Chemistry.
OBJECTIVES
With the use of locally-available materials in the community, the Grade 9 students
should be able to:
1. describe the physical and and chemical properties of alkanes;
2. give common examples of of alkanes and mention their uses;
3. perform combustion reaction of alkanes;
alkanes;
4. observe teamwork and cooperation in doing the activities;
5. identify job careers
careers related to the production
production of alkane-based
alkane-based products;
products; and
6. propose solutions to air pollution issues causedcaused by the use of fossil fuels
(alkanes).

2. ENGAGE- 5 mins. [English, Social Studies, Math]
Projector
Show a picture of fractional distillation to the class and let Laptop
the students identify it. Picture of fractional
distillation
Then ask the following questions:
1. What industry makes use of fractional distillation?
2. What common products are obtained in the fractional
distillation?
Students are expected to give fuel products. Ask these
follow up questions:
3. What do vehicles use for them to run?
4. Do you know where the gasoline stations in Laoag
City are located?
5. What are these gasoline stations?
6. Which gasoline station offers the cheapest price for
one Liter of their variety of products?
3. EXPLORE- 20 mins. [English, Math, TLE] MATERIALS
Divide the students into groups of five. Each group has its Projector
own leader, secretary, time-keeper, presenter, and material Laptop
manager. The students will bring-out the materials that were Worksheet
assigned to bring. Likewise, provide the needed laboratory Gasoline
apparatuses. Discuss the objectives and procedure of the kerosene
activities. Further, review safety procedures in the conduct of Paraffin wax (candle)
the experiment. Lubricating grease
Graduated cylinder
Let the students perform the activity and answer the guide Beakers
questions. Do maximum supervision while the students Matchstick
perform the group activity. Watch glass

5. ELABORATE-10 mins. [ICT, Engineering, Social
Studies, Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao, Environmental
Science]
Strengthen the concepts gained by the students in the Projector
activities through lecture-discussion and video-clip Laptop
presentation containing fractional distillation and the other Marker
uses of alkanes. Correct misconceptions, as the need White board
arises.

7. EXTEND-2 mins. [MAPEH, TLE, English, Filipino, ICT,
Social Studies]
Students (in group) will be given the freedom to choose from Laptop
one of the following activities as an output: Video Recorder /

The unified theme for the various activities is “Alkanes:
Revolutionizing Life. Each output shall be evaluated based
on the following criteria:
Creativity – 10 points
Content – 10 points
Clarity of Message – 10 points
Total – 30 points
Students are given time to plan and prepare for their chosen
group activity. Presentation shall be made on an agreed
time.
