MEC630 FINITE ELEMENT METHOD TEST-2 (90 minutes)

PART-1

1. (i) Analyze whether it is more advantageous modeling the structure above (loaded by a force)
using beam element instead of frame element. (C3, 10%)
(ii) Either frame or bar element can be used to model a structure . After introduction of the
boundary conditions, the structural stiffness matrix of frame based model is 4X4, while if
bar element is used the size is 2X2. Draw the FE model using frame and also FE model
using bar with the loading shown. (C3, 10%)
(iii) A membrane (in-plane) structure in the form of a triangular plate is loaded by a single force
(the direction of the force is up to you) at the middle of one of its edge. Pin-joint supports
are applied at two corners. Construct the simplest Constant Strain Triangle based finite
element model for this structure and state the size of the Structural Stiffness Matrix [K].
(C3, 10%)

PART-2
2. Using frame element, build finite element model for the structure below loaded by an external
moment (10,000N.m) at its right end, and then obtain all displacements at the point where that
moment is applied. Also, obtain the roller force reaction. If the right roller support is replaced
by a pin-joint-support, analyze the change of the displacements at the same loaded point.

A = 1E-3 m2, I = 1E-6 m4, and E = 100,000E6 N/m2. (C4, 40%)

3. Figure below shows a structure made of two different components/elements. The triangular part
behaves in a plane stress manner with t = 0.01m. The 1000 N force is applied at a mid-point of
one of the triangular edge (please see the figure). Material: E = 100,000 MPa, υ = 0.3
(a) Construct the finite element model and
determine the size of [K] after
introducing the boundary conditions.
(b) Based on the FE model set up above, 1000 N
find [B], [B]T, and [D] of the triangular 1m
element that has the pin support at one y

of its node. Be careful with the units. x

node with pin support on it as the i -

node).
(c) Compare the stress change of the
element in (3b), if the mid roller support is taken away . (C4, 30%)
