1. (i) Analyze if the structure above (with roller and pin supports) can be modeled with one
element only. (C3, 6%)
(ii) Analyze the force reaction (in x- and y-direction) of the roller support at the right end of
the structure above. (C3, 6%)
(iii) Using element equation, show the effect of choosing opposite local axis direction to the
truss element stiffness matrix . (C3, 8%)

PART-2

2. A bar structure is made of mild steel by welding Part-1 and Part-2 as shown below. Part-1 is
having cross sectional area of 1.0E-4 m2, while part 2 is 0.5E-4 m2. Young’s Modulus is
200,000 E6 N/m2, with a 20,000 N force applied at the middle of Part-2 (that is 0.2m from
the right end). Obtain the displacement at the welded joint, and the stress of part-1. Using
linear displacement shape function concept, obtain the displacement at a distance of 0.1 m
from the left end. Finally, analyze the displacement of the welded joint if the cross section of
Part-1 is reduced to 0.5E-4 m2 (the same as Part-2).

3. For the two-member truss structure below, find the reaction forces at all supports,
displacement at the point of load application, and stress of the member on the right. Use
cross sectional area of 1.0E-3 m2 and Young’s Modulus of 100,000 MPa. Analyze also
whether the stress will change if material with E=200,000 MPa is used instead.
Note: 1 MPa = 1E6 N/m2= 1,000,000 N/m2 (C4, 40%)
