When you were born, you were given an important gift by your family. Do you
know what it was ? It was your name ! A name may be given for many reasons. A person
may be named after his parents or relative. There are people who are also named for a
famous person, place or event.
In the past, many people believed that their names were magical. If a person
knew somebody else’s name, that person had power over him. Due to this, people kept
their names secret. Instead of their real names, they used false names.
Most names have a meaning. For example, the English name Thomas means
‘twin’. The Japanese name Ichiko means ‘number one child’. The Arabic name Abdullah
means ‘servant of God’. The East Indian name Dhan means ‘little rice plant’.
In most parts of the world, when a woman marries, she takes her husband’s last

names but that it is not important. The most important thing about a name is, it is a word
that means you wherever you go.
