Prior knowledge Before completing this lesson students should have an

understanding of:
 Solution as a homogenous mixture
 Components of solution (solute and solvent)
 Solution of different types
General objectives Apply suitable separation techniques based on differences in
properties of the components of mixtures;
At the end of the lesson students should be able to:
Specific objectives
 Define filtration
 Explain the basis on which the method of filtration is
based.
 Define a filtrate
 Draw annotated diagram to illustrate filtration

Engage (10 minutes)
1. Teacher will begin the lesson by discussing with the students the importance of purifying/
separating mixtures in our daily lives (Water Treatment Process).
2. The students will be ask to brainstorm types of mixtures and some examples of each.
Explore (20 minutes)
1. Students will work in teams to observe and separated different materials being mixed
together.
2. Record their observations in a table and discuss them.

Explain (10 Minutes)

3. Students will discuss with the teacher their observations.
4. Students will draw annotated diagram of the separation technique (filtration).

PowerPoint Quiz
Students will be asked questions to expand their knowledge.

Evaluate :
Class Activity
 What is the solid remaining in the filter paper called?
 The liquid which passes through the filter paper is called?
 Give examples of some types of mixture that can be separated by filtration

Homework
1. Identify five (5) types of liquid in liquid mixtures (Homogeneous and
Heterogeneous).
2. Which separation technique can be used to separate the identified mixtures in
question one?
