October 6, 2010 Lesson I The Samarian Woman at the

Well
To Remember: We must worship God in our hearts and according to the Bible

Vocabulary

• worship: honor, reverence, praise, pray, serve

• spirit: heart, mind, soul

Jesus was at a well in Samaria when a woman approached. She was Samaritan, and the
Jews usually did not speak to Samaritans. So she was very surprised when He asked her
to draw Him some water. Jesus answered that if she knew who He was, she would ask
Him for living water. The woman was confused. Jesus didn't have a bucket, how would
He draw water? She asked Him if He was greater than Jacob, who dug the well. (In
actuality, He was, but she didn't know that yet.)

Jesus told the woman that her water would only quench her thirst for a while. He had
water that would quench her thirst forever! The woman like that. She wouldn't have to
carry water every day. She asked how she could get this water. Jesus told her to bring her
husband to see Him. She replied that she had no husband. Jesus said, that's right. You've
been married before, but you are not now.
When the woman realized that Jesus knew all about her life, she thought He was a
prophet. She asked a common religious question about where to worship. Jesus said we
must worship in spirit and in truth; that's more important than the physical place. We
must worship in our heart and do what's right.
John 4:5-15, 19-25
5 Eventually he came to the Samaritan village of Sychar, near the parcel of ground that
Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
6 Jacob's well was there; and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well
about noontime.
water, and Jesus said to her, "Please give me a drink."
9 The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with Samaritans. She
said to Jesus, "You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a
drink?"
10 Jesus replied, "If you only knew the gift God has for you and who I am, you would
ask me, and I would give you living water."
11 "But sir, you don't have a rope or a bucket," she said, "and this is a very deep well.
Where would you get this living water?
12 And besides, are you greater than our ancestor Jacob who gave us this well? How can
you offer better water than he and his sons and his cattle enjoyed?"
13 Jesus replied, "People soon become thirsty again after drinking this water.

19 "Sir," the woman said, "you must be a prophet.

20 So tell me, why is it that you Jews insist that Jerusalem is the only place of worship,
while we Samaritans claim it is here at Mount Gerizim, where our ancestors worshiped?"
21 Jesus replied, "Believe me, the time is coming when it will no longer matter whether
you worship the Father here or in Jerusalem.

22 You Samaritans know so little about the one you worship, while we Jews know all
about him, for salvation comes through the Jews.

October 13 Lesson 2 Jesus Heals a Noble’s Son & A Crippled Man

To Remember: Jesus proved He was from God by healing people
Vocabulary - Faith: to believe, trust
Noble’s Son John 4:46-54
46 He came therefore again unto Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine.
And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.
47 When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto
him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son; for he was at
the point of death.
48 Jesus therefore said unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will in no
wise believe.
49 The nobleman said unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die.
50 Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy son lives. The man believed the word
that Jesus spoke unto him, and he went his way.
51 And as he was now going down, his servants met him, saying, that his son
lived.
52 So he inquired of them the hour when he began to amend. They said therefore
unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.
53 So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said unto him, Thy
son lives: and himself believed, and his whole house.
54 This is again the second sign that Jesus did, having come out of Judaea into
Galilee.
After talking to the woman at the well, Jesus traveled to Cana in Galilee. While He was
there a nobleman whose son was very sick came to him. He asked Jesus twice to come
and heal his son, who was in Capernaum. Jesus told the man that his son would live, and
to go home. The man believed Jesus, without seeing any change, or demanding that Jesus
see his son in person. On his way home, his servants met him on the way to tell him that
the boy was well. The noble asked them what time of day he had improved, and it turned
out to be the same hour Jesus had declared that he was fine. This converted the man’s
house to Christ. His miracle proved He was who He claimed to be.
A Crippled Man John 5:1-9
1 After these things there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the sheep gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew
Bethesda, having five porches.
3 In these lay a multitude of them that were sick, blind, halt, withered, waiting for
the moving of the water.
4 for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool, and
troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling
of the waters stepped in was made whole, with whatsoever disease he was holden.
5 And a certain man was there, who had been thirty and eight years in his
infirmity.
6 When Jesus saw him lying, and knew that he had been now a long time in that
case, he said unto him, Would thou be made whole?

7 The sick man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to
put me into the pool: but while I am coming,
another steps down before me.
8 Jesus said unto him, Arise, take up thy bed, and walk.
9 And straightway the man was made whole, and took up his bed and walked.
Now it was the sabbath on that day.
There was a pool of water in Bethesda that was said to heal men if they dipped in it when
it stirred. Jesus approached a man who had been crippled for 38 years. He asked if the
man would like to be healed? The man said he couldn’t, because he couldn’t get to the
water when it stirred, because no one would help him. Jesus answered, “Rise, take up thy
bed and walk.” And he did.
Now it happened that it was the Sabbath day, and certain Jews told him it was sinful to
carry his bed on the Sabbath. They didn’t understand that a great miracle had happened.
The man told them he’d been healed and told to take his bed and walk away. He didn’t
know who it was that healed him. Later Jesus met him in the temple, and forgave him of
his sins. Then the man knew who it was. He told the Jews it was Jesus, and they sought to
punish Jesus for doing this on a sabbath. They did not understand the meaning of the
miracle, that Jesus was come from God.

October 20 Lesson 3 Nicodemus Comes to Jesus

To Remember: Baptism (being born again) is necessary for salvation

Vocabulary
• Baptism: immersion in water for forgiveness
John 3:1-6; 16
1 After dark one evening, a Jewish religious leader named Nicodemus, a Pharisee,
2 came to speak with Jesus. "Teacher," he said, "we all know that God has sent you to
teach us.
Your miraculous signs are proof enough that God is with you."

16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes

November 10 Lesson 2 Parables: The Pearl of Great Price

To Remember: God's kingdom is worth all that we have
Vocabulary kingdom of heaven: all the saved, Christ's church (and what it stands for -
a right relationship with God)
Scriptures Matthew 13:44-46
44 The kingdom of heaven is like unto a treasure hidden in the field; which a man found,
and hid;
and in his joy he goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.
45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is a merchant seeking goodly
pearls:
46 and having found one pearl of great price, he went and sold all that he had, and bought
it.
Do you have one thing that you like more than all the others? Do you have a best friend?
What are you willing to give up in
order to have that one thing or to be with that friend? In these verses, Jesus describes a
treasure so great, so valuable,
so precious, the men sold everything they had to gain it. They did not value anything of
theirs as much as they valued the
chance to have the treasure or the pearl. Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven with this
valuable treasure.
What Christ has offered us is so great, so valuable, that there is nothing we have that is
worth keeping if it means
we can't be in the kingdom. Think about the treasure in the field. If the man sold his
house, then got the treasure,
he would have the money to build a bigger house. The kingdom of heaven is the same
way. Jesus said:
Matthew 19:29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or
mother or children or fields,
for my name's sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life.
There is nothing we could need that God can not provide for his people. He compares us
to the birds and the flowers.
If he takes care of them, we know he will take care of us, too.
Matthew 6:33 But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all
these things [food, drink, clothing]
will be given to you as well.
Have you ever had a yard sale? It can be difficult to decide how much your old things are
worth.
Or even if you want to sell them at all. In life, we often have to decide how much certain
activities or habits are worth to us.
Should we keep them? Which is most important. Jesus is telling us in this lesson that the
most valuable thing in our life is

our relationship to God. Are we in the kingdom? Will our activities or habits keep us
from staying in the kingdom?
What could possibly be more important than saving our souls and pleasing God?
Matthew 16:26 For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit
their life?
Or what will they give in return for their life? Merchant Seeks a Valuable Pearl"
True or False
The man who bought the pearl did not sell his house.
God will supply all our needs.
The men thought for a long time before deciding to buy the treasures.
We must decide what is truly important in our lives.
We will never have to give up anything for God.
Discussion: What kinds of activities or habits can keep us out of the kingdom? What
kinds of "pearls" should we be seeking in life?

November 17 Lesson 3 Joseph's Coat
Main Points to Remember
1) Bragging can be hurtful to others
2) We must control jealousy, not let it control us

Vocabulary: jealousy: disliking someone because of what they have

Prayer: Father, we thank you for protecting us through the difficult times like Joseph
went through.

Scripture Genesis 37:3-36

3 Now Jacob loved Joseph more than any of his other children because Joseph had been
born to him in his old age.
So one day he gave Joseph a special gift--a beautiful robe.

4 But his brothers hated Joseph because of their father's partiality. They couldn't say a
kind word to him.

5 One night Joseph had a dream and promptly reported the details to his brothers, causing
them to hate him even more.

7 "We were out in the field tying up bundles of grain. My bundle stood up, and then your
bundles all gathered around and bowed low before it!"

9 Then Joseph had another dream and told his brothers about it. "Listen to this dream," he
said. "The sun, moon,
and eleven stars bowed low before me!"
10 This time he told his father as well as his brothers, and his father rebuked him. "What
do you mean?" his father asked.
"Will your mother, your brothers, and I actually come and bow before you?"
11 But while his brothers were jealous of Joseph, his father gave it some thought and
wondered what it all meant.

15 When he arrived there, a man noticed him wandering around the countryside. "What
are you looking for?" he asked.

16 "For my brothers and their flocks," Joseph replied. "Have you seen them?"
20 "Come on, let's kill him and throw him into a deep pit. We can tell our father that a
wild animal has eaten him. Then we'll see what becomes of all his dreams!"

21 But Reuben came to Joseph's rescue. "Let's not kill him," he said.

22 "Why should we shed his blood? Let's just throw him alive into this pit here. That way
he will die without our having to touch him." Reuben was secretly planning to help
Joseph escape, and then he would bring him back to his father.
23 So when Joseph arrived, they pulled off his beautiful robe

water, but it was empty at the time.

27 Let's sell Joseph to those Ishmaelite traders. Let's not be responsible for his death;
after all, he is our brother!" And his brothers agreed.

32 They took the beautiful robe to their father and asked him to identify it. "We found
this in the field," they told him.
"It's Joseph's robe, isn't it?"

True/False
1. Joseph dreamed that he would rule over his brothers.
2. Joseph’s brothers were jealous of him.
3. Jacob treated all his sons the same.
4. All of Joseph’s brothers wanted to kill him.
5. Joseph was sold as a slave.

Memory WorkGenesis 37:3 "Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons,
because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made a richly ornamented robe for
him."Psalm 121:7-8 "The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your
life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore."

Novemember 24 Lesson 4 The Widow's Mite To Remember:

Jesus knows all about us
Vocabulary

• Sacrifice: to give up something valuable or important

• Mite: the Roman coin that was worth the least

Scripture
Mark 12:41-44
41 And he sat down over against the treasury, and beheld how the multitude cast
money into
the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much.
42 And there came a poor widow, and she cast in two mites, which make a farthing.
43 And he called unto him his disciples, and said unto them, Verily I say unto you,
This poor widow cast in more than all they that are casting into the treasury:
44 for they all did cast in of their superfluity; but she of her want did cast in all that
she had, even all her living.
Luke 21:1-4
1 And he looked up, and saw the rich men that were casting their gifts into the
treasury.
2 And he saw a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites.
3 And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, This poor widow cast in more than they all:
4 for all these did of their superfluity cast in unto the gifts; but she of her want did
cast in all the living that she had.
The Jews were instructed to give to the Temple and to the poor as part of their service to
God. (So are we).
One day Jesus sat at the Temple and watched people putting money into the offering
boxes. Some people were rich and gave lots of money.
Some gave money, but were unhappy about it. Then an poor woman, a widow, came up
to the boxes.

The poor woman put two of the smallest coins there were in the offering box. The
disciples with Jesus weren't very impressed,
but Jesus said this woman has given more than any other today. How could that be?
Jesus said it was because it was all she had.

How did the woman think she would buy dinner that night? She trusted in God to provide
for her. She obeyed God's command,
knowing that He would fulfill His promise to care for her in return. We must trust God
the same way. Matt 6:33 says:
"Seek first the kingdom of God and Hid righteousness and all these things (food, clothes,
etc) will be added unto you."

Object Lesson: Distribute pennies to the class, giving each child between two and ten
pennies. Then ask each child to put two of their pennies in a jar for the collection that
day. The students who received only two pennies may complain that other students will
have pennies to keep, but they won't. Explain that while every student put in two pennies,
some put in a greater percentage of their total pennies. Some gave all they had while
some had plenty left. (Optional). Give a quarter to those who gave all they had. Explain
that God always rewards those who sacrifice for him, while those who are greedy may
have to depend on what they can get for themselves.
