Plagiarism*

In the case of a thesis, plagiarism includes, but is not limited to:

Using published work without referencing from a book or article or the Internet
o In this case, there is evidence of substantial copying from one source
(words, arrangement of material and ideas are those of the source) or
multiple sources (structure and composition is the student’s own work,
the words are not). The excuses that the book or article was cited in the
bibliography or the sources in question put it better than I could are
unacceptable. The student needs to be told that a bibliography is a list of
sources consulted not copied from and that he or she is expected to use
the sources constructively and demonstrate that he or she has understood
them and been able to use them effectively in his or her work.
o Paraphrasing is suspicious since the student is summarizing someone
else’s ideas as his or her own by just putting it into his or her own words.
However, paraphrasing is a reality and sometimes unavoidable. There are
three key things to remember in this case to ensure that it cannot be
thought to be plagiarism – acknowledge all sources, take care when
taking notes and consult a number of books or articles.

Purchasing modules or software that you had to simulate or build

o If your methodology included developing a simulation then you should
realise that you are not only breaking an agreement but you are also not
improving your own skills which might be helpful to you in the future. If
getting part of the code is unavoidable and you also want to avoid
plagiarism charges then you must clearly cite the sources.

There is light at the end of the tunnel - plagiarism can be avoided:

By making notes after you have read and understood the book or the article

In paraphrasing by attributing the broad ideas or content to the author in question

By using quotations (though in rare cases only) and citing all relevant sources
that you have used

You can always be sure that your work is free of plagiarism if before submitting your
work you test yourself against this declaration:
I certify that this is my own work. The work has not, in whole or in part, been presented
elsewhere for assessment. Where material has been used from other sources it has been
properly acknowledged. If this statement is untrue I acknowledge that I will have
committed plagiarism.
