FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS LAB REPORT

Experiment No: 8
Objective:
Consider a four story building with steel columns. The column is subjected to the loading
shown in figure below. Assuming axial loading.
(a) Determine vertical displacements of the column connection points
(b) Determine the stresses in each portion of the column.
E= 29x1000000 lb/in2 A= 59.1 in2

Procedure:
Discretization:
1. There were 4elements and 5 nodes of the above figure.

Working in ANSYS Mechanical APDL:

2. On ANSYS software, The job name was changed from file<job name as shown below:

3. The directory was changed from file<change directory option as shown below:

Figure 2

4. Analysis type was changed by selecting preferences<structural and then click OK.

Pre Processing Phase:

5. Element type was changed by selecting Preprocessor<Add/Edit/Delete<Link<3D finit stn

6. For defining real constants the given area was used for the corresponding elements. Area
was defined 59.1 in2. It is same for all the elements so it is defined only once

7. The material properties were selected by going to material model and then select
Structural<linear<elastic<isotropic and added Modulus of Elasticity = 29 e 6 and PRXY
value = 0.3.

8. Nodes were created by selecting modeling<create<nodes<in active CS. For Node 1

coordinates were given as X=0,Y=0 Z=0, press apply (Node 1 is created).

Figure 6

Similarly all 5 nodes are created by defining the coordinates as given in the table below.

Nodes Coordinates
1 (0,0,0)
2 (0,180,0)
3 (0,360,0)
4 (0,540,0)
5 (0,720,0)

9. Nodes were joined by going to modelling<create<elements<auto numbered<thru nodes

and pick node 1 and 2, press OK (Nodes 3 and 4are joined) as shown below:

The above step was repeated for joining remaining nodes one by one from 2-3,3-4and 4-5 .
10. Boundary conditions and loads were applied by going to option loads<define
loads<apply<structural<displacement. Pick node 1<Ok<Select DOFs to be
constrained<OK.(Displacements were displayed at node 1in x,y and z directions).

11. Now go to options loads<define loads<apply<structural<Force/moment. Pick node 1 and

then press OK. Now select direction of force= FY and put the value of force/moment = -
60000 lb for node 2 3 and 4. Repeat this procedure for node 5 with force/moment=-70000
lb (Forces were displayed at nodes 2 and 3,4 and 5 in y direction).

RESULTS TABLES:
Joint Deformations: Table 1:
Node No Deformation y-Direction (in):
1 0
2 -0.26256×10-1
3 -0.46210×10-1
4 -0.59863×10-1
5 -0.67215×10-1

Support Reactions: Table 2:

Node No Reaction forces (lb.)

Fx Fy Fz
1 0 250000 0
2 0 0 0
3 0 0 0
4 0 0 0
5 0 0 0
Total 0 250000 0

Axial Stresses in Members: Table 3:

Element Number Axial Stress (lb./in2)
1 -4230.1
2 -3214.9
3 -2199.7
4 -1184.4

Comments:
 Axial stresses were maximum in Element 4 and minimum in Element 1 as element 1 is
fixed and bearing the least amount of stress
 Reaction force is only present at node 1 in Fy direction as only node 1 is fixed
 Deformation are max at node 1 because compressive forces are acting and least
deformation is on node 5 indicated by the negative value of deformation
