[Taking decisions in science] - The question of how knowledge is produced

takes us back to our starting point in this program: Brian Wynne’s recognition
that science’s purposes are always determined in a social context. Knowledge is
potentially infinite. What we can attend to at a given moment is severely
limited. So there's always a question as to what will count as knowledge in a
given context, and another about who will decide what counts. These questions,
for Brian Wynne, are almost always properly political. That is, they require a
judgment about what is good, a judgment which the scientist is no more
competent to render [decide] than any other citizen. Brian Wynne’s examples at
the moment are drawn from genomics. Contemporary research in genetics has
replaced the image of the all-powerful gene with a picture in which genes
interact with a complex cellular environment. Intervening in this complex
environment inevitably involves decisions about what to attend to and what to
ignore. And this is explicit, he says, in the scientific literature he’s been reading.

David Cayley

Mathematical ideas, Sajay Samuel says, are freely created by the mind. This does
not mean, obviously, that mathematics has no purchase on the world. That
mathematical ideas mysteriously correspond with the cosmos had been known
since antiquity [ancient times]. What was new in the 17th century was the
thought that these timeless forms could be applied to the living, ever-changing
world of earthly nature. And it took a bold [confident] step to get to this idea,
Sajay Samuel thinks, because, during the Middle Ages, mathematical
knowledge, particularly geometry, had been considered god-like [as god].

What You Can Do With Research

So what can we use research to do in order to gain this new knowledge?. Some
of the ways it can be used one to:

1. Categorize. This involves forming a typology of objects, events or concepts,

i.e. a set of names or ‘boxes’ into which these can be sorted. This can be
useful in explaining which ‘things’ belong together and how.

2. Describe. Descriptive research relies on observation as a means of collecting

data. It attempts to examine situations in order to establish what is the
norm, i.e. what can be predicted to happen again under the same
circumstances.

3. Explain. This is a descriptive type of research specifically designed to deal

with complex issues. It aims to move beyond ‘just getting the facts’ in order
to make sense of the myriad [variety] other elements involved, such as
human, political, social, cultural and contextual.

4. Evaluate. This involves making judgments about the quality of objects or

events. Quality can be measured either in an absolute sense or on a
comparative basis. To be useful, the methods of evaluation must be relevant
to the context and intentions of the research.

5. Compare. Two or more contrasting cases can be examined to highlight

differences and similarities between them, leading to a better
understanding of phenomena.

Go to: https://sites.google.com/site/mcenriqueruizdiaz/ Página 11 de 44

Leadership of 100 and 5 Stars -- 04 -- Ed. 2.0

6. Correlate. The relationships between two phenomena are investigated to

see whether and how they influence each other. The relationship might be
just a loose [moveable] link at one extreme or a direct link when one
phenomenon causes another. These are measured as levels of association.

7. Predict. This can sometimes be done in research areas where correlations

are already known. Predictions of possible future behaviour or events are
made on the basis that if there has been a strong relationship between two
or more characteristics or events in the past, then these should exist in
similar circumstances in the future, leading to predictable outcomes
[results].

8. Control. Once you understand an event or situation, you may be able to

find ways to control it. For this you need to know what the cause and effect
relationships are and that you are capable of exerting [employing] control
over the vital ingredients. All of technology relies on [counts on] this ability
to control.

You can combine two or more of these objectives in a research project, with
sometimes one objective needing to be successfully achieved before starting the
next, for example you usually need to be able to explain how something
happens before you can work out [resolve] how to control it.

What Makes People do Research?

This is a fundamentally important question. No person would like to do

research unless there are some motivating factors. Some of the motivations are
the following:

1. to get a research degree (Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)) along with its

benefits like better employment, promotion, increment in salary, etc.

2. to get a research degree and then to get a teaching position in a college or

university or become a scientist in a research institution

3. to get a research position in [… an important country]

4. to solve the unsolved and challenging problems

5. to get joy of doing some creative work

6. to acquire respectability

7. to get recognition

8. curiosity to find out [discover] the unknown facts of an event

9. curiosity to find new things

10. to serve the society by solving social problems.

Some students undertake [agree to] research without any aim possibly because
of not being able to think of anything else to do. Such students can also become
good researchers by motivating themselves toward a respectable goal. As
pointed out [indicates] by Prof. Rajesh Kasturirangan (NIAS, IISc) even if you
work in a company or run a company, a mind inclined towards research would
do better than a mind not trained for it.

Why do we have to manage knowledge?

1. Marketplaces [Markets] are increasingly [progressively] competitive

3. Competitive pressures reduce the size of the work force that holds

Once the KM strategy is defined, the organization will have a road [path] map

The Worry-Buster Formula

One of the very best ways to clear your mind and build your confidence in your
ability to solve the problem is to quickly use the four-part worry-buster formula.
Here it is:

1. Stop and identify the worst possible outcome [result] of the problem or
crisis. Be perfectly honest with yourself and others. Ask, ‘‘What is the
worst thing that can happen in this situation?’’

2. Resolve to accept the worst, whatever it is, should it occur. This action
calms you down [through] and clears your mind. Once you have mentally
decided that you can live with the worst possible outcome, you will stop
worrying.

3. Determine what you would do if the worst possible outcome occurred.

What actions would you take?

4. Begin immediately to improve upon the worst possible outcome. Identify

everything you could do to minimize the damage or reduce your losses.
Focus all your time and attention on achieving the very best outcome you
possibly can.

The entrepreneur - To be successful, the entrepreneur must demonstrate

understanding and insight in three areas. First, the entrepreneur and the top
management team must understand their business. Without a clear
understanding of the business and its environment, they will never be able to
reach a consensus with the investors on the fundamentals [stipulations], let
[authorized] alone the financing. [Second] Entrepreneurs must know their
business well enough to understand the absolute amount of money they need
and when they will need it. They must understand the risks involved and the
cause-and-effect factors so that they can explain and defend their actions to
potential investors. They need to understand the nature of the returns the
business can offer—the sources of these returns, their magnitude, and their
timing. [Third] Next, entrepreneurs must understand financiers and the context
in which they make their decisions. Investors are interested not only in the
amount of money they may make but also in the risk of their investment, the
timing of the returns, the controls to protect their money, and the mechanisms
needed to (1) reinvest if necessary, (2) abandon if prudent, and (3) harvest when
appropriate.

Marc J. Dollinger

Innovation - Uniformity (i.e. if everybody behaves and thinks the same), will
lead to a poor adaptation to changing environmental or market conditions. In
contrast, a large variety of different approaches (i.e. a heterogeneous
population) will imply a large innovation rate. The innovation rate is actually
expected to be proportional to the variance of individual solutions.

Entrepreneurship in education means developing personal qualities and

reform agenda any member country has undertaken in recent years.

On security, Peña Nieto said “we didn’t achieve the objective of restoring peace
and security for all Mexicans in every corner [of the country].”

He added that “to make that desire a reality, a sustained effort for a long period
supported by public resources will be required.”

However, the president sidestepped [evaded] total responsibility for the

security situation, instead blaming high levels of violence on the inability of
municipal and state police forces to combat small criminal gangs [groups] that
emerged after cartel leaders, such as Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, were
captured.

He highlighted that his administration had proposed a reform to have single

command police forces in each state but it didn’t pass Congress.

Peña Nieto described the new accusatory justice system as “the most important
[legal] change in more than a century” although he conceded it was
“perfectible.”

In contrast, a report published by the Washington Post last December said the
system was in turmoil [turbulence].

Turning to social policy achievements, Peña Nieto said that more than two
million people had come out [come to light] of extreme poverty during his six-
year term, adding that if the same rate of poverty eradication continues to be
maintained, no Mexicans would live in extreme poverty by the end of the next
decade.

On education, Peña Nieto defended the highly-controversial reform his

administration implemented, stating that the government sought [required] to
put students at the center of education.

“We planted the most important seed of change in public education in Mexico
in the last 60 years,” he said.

With regard to the economy, Peña Nieto said that financial, telecommunications
and energy reforms are starting to produce results and have opened up new
opportunities, while he also stressed [emphasized] that the trade agreement
reached last week with the United States reduced economic uncertainty
[insecurity].

In addition, he cited the trade agreement with the European Union, the Trans-
Pacific Partnership and the strengthening of trade relations in Latin America as
achievements of his administration along with investment in infrastructure,
tourism and agriculture.

However, a devaluation of the peso of almost 50% during his term and anemic
average economic growth of 2.1% during his first five years in office provided
nothing to brag [talk big] about.

Peña Nieto said that he was leaving “a manageable and declining level of debt”
although government debt as a percentage of gross [heavy] domestic product
(GDP) actually increased during his administration from 33.8% in 2012 to 45.4%
by mid-2018.

The president, who will leave office at the end of November, also congratulated
his successor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who will be sworn [affirmed] in
on December 1 and has pledged [promised] to stamp out [eradicate] corruption
and review or change some of Peña Nieto’s key reforms.

Although he faced historically low approval ratings — resulting in a crushing

defeat for the Institutional Revolutionary Party at the July 1 elections — and led
an administration that was plagued with corruption scandals and record levels
of violence, Peña Nieto charged that he has delivered [produce] on the vast
majority of his public pledges [undertakings].

“When my administration ends, I will have fulfilled 97% of the promises I made
to the public.”

The importance of doing participatory and action research was underscored

to train grassroots [common] women to conduct participatory research where
they could develop skills to critically analyze their existing conditions. This will
facilitate their organizing for collective action.

La Biblia - Palabra y acción.

20 Hijo mío, atiende a mis palabras, | presta atención a mis razones;

21 nunca las pierdas de vista, | guárdalas en tu corazón,

22 pues dan vida a quien las encuentra, | proporcionan salud a su cuerpo.

23 Sobre todo, vigila tus intenciones, | pues de ellas brota la vida.

24 Aparta de tu boca la maledicencia, | aleja la mentira de tus labios;

25 mira siempre de frente, | que no se desvíe tu mirada.

26 Mira dónde pones los pies | y será seguro tu camino;

27 No te desvíes a derecha ni a izquierda, | aparta tus pasos de la maldad.

Know the Project: Books of English, from English 1 to 5, for all

the CBTIS of the United Mexican States.

The Students can do the organization as they like it; but

absolutely, the Responses are written by hand, and the Works
are Presented by Groups with a Maximum of 5 persons.

«I formulated a project for the CBTIS (Technological Industrial and of Services Center of
Bachelor Degree) 107 of Tuxtepec, Oaxaca, México consisting in giving to the Library of this
Institution with five volumes of English language, of my authorship. A book for each semester,
from the first English book to fifth English book (according to the plan of studies in this regard
of the CBTIS). At no cost to the Institution, because this is a donation (in the staff, I solve my
expenses of the project with income of my employment as a professor that I would be in this
CBTIS).
One of the major advantages of this project is to solve the need of the student of
spending in books of English language because the books will be at your complete disposal into
the student community in the Library of the institution.
Afterward, in an immediate subsequent phase of this project is that among the student
community of this CBTIS and all the CBTIS of the United Mexican States will have these 5
volumes of English language by means of a page of Google; read it, neither cost nor restriction
to obtain them.
Well, as a last note, I must say that these books will have the format of 'workbook'.
This, as an intelligent work with foundations and then their respective exercises to resolve, into
a concurrent process». M.C. Enrique Ruiz Díaz.
