ICE Raids North Carolina

The ICE has been holding raids throughout the last week and a half in various parts of
North Carolina (Vasquez). The ICE has been dealing with a lack of cooperation from local
governments (Vasquez). Throughout these raids around 200 illegal immigrants have been
arrested by the ICE (Vasquez). These raids are not expected to end anytime soon with the large
success being seen in the raids (Vasquez). A recent raid in Hendersonville North Carolina has
some people in fear.
There were four men arrested during the quick raid in Hendersonville (DeGrave). Some
believe that they are targeting Hendersonville due to previous success the agency has had in the
area (DeGrave). Many people in the area feel the raids have been unfair and nerve racking due
to the fact they do not drive a marked vehicle (DeGrave). The ICE has also used new tactics in
the raids so that the immigrants won’t able to avoid the incoming raids (DeGrave). Recently
Mayor of Ashville, Esther Manheimer released a statement against these raids, joining 6 other
mayors to do so (DeGrave).
Recently 7 Mayors from North Carolina have released a joint statement against the raids
throughout their state (Baumgartner Vaughan). The letter was written by the mayor of Durham,
Steve Schewel, the letter was then signed by 6 other mayors including that of Ashville Esther
Manheimer (Baumgartner Vaughan). While they cannot actually stop the raids from happening
they hope that the ICE listens to their requests and stops the raids (Baumgartner Vaughan). THey
stated that the raids were disrupting the lives of those around the raids who have no link to the
immigrants other than living close to them (Baumgartner Vaughan). A statement was also
released in which Wendy Jacobs who is part of the Durham County Board stated that she felt that
these raids are not making the area safer which is supposed to be why they are happening
(Baumgartner Vaughan). She went even further to say that the raids were actually making people
less safe (Baumgartner Vaughan). While the mayors and high political officials in the area may
want the raids to stop, ICE doesn’t have to stop and seemingly have no plans to stop anytime
soon.
