solar cell panels for making this solar city. solar cell panels use one of the renewable source of energy that is sunlight.
Solar panels are the product which is used to
generate electricity and helps to save energy. Solar panels are used to generate a portion of your home’s power in order to reduce the dependency on traditional power sources. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- explain solar energy.
- describe ways solar energy is used. - discuss the pros and cons of solar energy CONCEPT
1. A solar panel is a collection of solar cells. Lots
of small solar cells spread over a large area can work together to provide enough power to be useful. The more light that hits a cell, the more electricity it produces.
2. Solar panels, also known as modules, contain
photovoltaic cell made from element transform incoming sunlight into electricity rather than heat. (“Photovoltaic” means electricity from light – photo =light, voltaic = electricity.) How do solar panels work and generate electricity? A standard solar panel consists of a layer of silicon cells, a metal frame, a glass casing and various wiring to allow current to flow from the silicon cells. Silicon (atomic #14 on the periodic table) is a nonmetal with conductive properties that allow it to absorb and convert sunlight into electricity. When light interacts with a silicon cell, it causes electrons to be set into motion, which initiates a flow of electric. This is known as the “photovoltaic effect,” and it describes the general functionality of solar panel technology. The general photovoltaic process, as described above, works through the following steps. 1. The silicon photovoltaic solar cell absorbs solar radiation. 2. When the sun’s rays interact with the silicon cell, electrons begin to move. 3. Moving electrons creates a flow of electric current, captured by nodes and wring in the panel. 4. Wires feed this direct current (DC) electricity to a solar inverter to be converted to alternating current (AC) electricity. How do solar panels work for your home? 1. Solar panels absorb the sun’s energy and convert it to DC electricity. 2. The solar inverter converts DC electricity from your solar panels to AC electricity, which is used by most home appliances. 3. Electricity flows through your home, powering electronic device. 4. Excess electricity produced by solar panels is fed to the electric grid. Why do solar arrays need to be oriented towards the sun? The amount of power available to a solar panel is proportional to the amount of light that reaches it. The more light it gets, The more power it produces. In space, the most important source of light is the Sun. The Sun emits just about the same amount of light in all directions.
When solar panels are pointed right at the Sun
(or aligned with the Sun), then they intercept the most light rays. When the solar panel is out of alignment, it intercepts fewer light rays.
