“Across the snow she followed the distinctive footprints of the

creature. They trailed into the treeline, and with each crunching

step, and with her breath billowing and her knuckles tensed to

white, the further she pulled on the bowstring. The footprints

disappeared into the woods; two large steps and then nothing.

She cocked her head, listening. Snow, sifted by the tree, fell with a

whisper around her. She looked up. The creature had been waiting.”
