For today’s lesson, you’ll get an idea of how to
say the date, week, month, and year in Mandarin.

At the end of the lesson, students should be able

to:
1. identify the date in Mandarin.
2. state the year, month, week, and day.
3. identify the festivals of Malaysia.

èr líng yī wǔ nián
二零一五 年
(Year 2015)
 Years are expressed by placing a numeral
before nián（年）. The number that
represents the year should be read digit by
digit.

Wáng Qiáng nǐ shì nǎ yì nián jìn dàxué de
王 强 ： 你是 哪一年 进大学的？
In which year did you get into the university?

Chén Měili èr líng yī sān nián nǐ ne

陈美丽： 二零一三年。你呢？
In 2013. And you?

Wáng Qiáng èr líng yī yī nián

王 强 ： 二零一一年。
In 2011.

 Days are expressed by placing a numeral
before rì（日）or hào（号）.
 The former is used in the written form, while
the latter appears in the spoken form.
 In Mandarin, dates sequence arrangement are
from year (年nián), month (月yuè) , day (日rì/
号hào). For example:
èr líng yī sì nián bāyuè shíjiǔ rì
二零一四年八月十九日。
(19 August 2014)

This is different from dates in English, where

the year is always placed last.

What’s the date today?

Chén Měili jīntiān shì bāyuè èrshíwǔ hào yě shì wǒ de shēngri

陈美丽 ： 今天 是八月 二十五号，也是我的 生日。
Today is 25 of August. It’s also my birthday.

Wáng Qiáng gōngxǐ nǐ zhù nǐ shēngri kuàile

王 强 ： 恭喜你！祝你 生日快乐。
Congratulations! Happy birthday.

I see. Tomorrow is the National Day of Malaysia.
