Activity: ​ If the Career Fits, Then Explore It!

Grade(s): ​ 9​th​, 10​th​, 11​th​, and 12​th​.

Learning Objective(s) (aligns with competency):

1. ​Students will complete a career inventory to identify at least one career of interest.

2. ​Students will identify their strengths and form a list of their education, current skills, and skills needed to develop for
their career of interest.

3. ​ Students will utilize career information from a variety of resources to identify educational requirements, salary, and
employment outlook for their selected careers.

Materials: ​Assessing Yourself packed that includes the Holland Interest Inventory and interest profile codes,
Self-Exploration worksheet, Do I Have the Skills? worksheet, and Career Research worksheet.

Procedure: 1.​ The school counselor will begin classroom lesson by asking students if they have ever taken a career
inventory. Students will share their thoughts on career assessments and how their interests and skills would translate
into a future career.
2.​ Allow students to discuss their experiences with career reflections and inventories.
3.​ Introduce the Assessing Yourself packet and other three worksheets to students.
4.​ Have students fill out the Self-Exploration worksheet to assess interests, skills, education, and work preferences.
5.​ Students will then complete the Holland Interest Inventory to discover their interest profiles.
6.​ Students will discover their profile by adding the three letters with the highest scores.
7.​ Students will read descriptions for each interest code, and match interest types to career clusters.
8.​ Allow time for students to discuss their interest codes and career cluster results.
9.​ ​Time permitting​ Students will fill out the Do I Have the Skills? And Career Research sheets and discuss their
answers.
10.​ The school counselor will provide students with office hours to discuss their findings and establish post high school
goals.

Plan for Evaluation: How will each of the following be collected?

Process Data: ​Students in each grade will participate in a 50-70-minute classroom lesson during P.E. assembly on
identifying their current and desired skills to develop for their ideal careers.

Perception Data: ​90% of students will identify their skills and strengths.
90% of students will choose at least one career option and explore the required skills and education, salary, and
employment outlook.

Outcome Data: ​Postsecondary enrollment will increase from 53% to 70%.

Follow-Up: ​In a month, the school counselor will conduct another classroom lesson to allow students to build a resume
using the skills they came up with in the previous lesson. Students may also use this opportunity to have the school
counselor assist them with filling out college applications.
