Clearance Check for Seattle - Inekon and CAF Vehicles

General Assumptions:

1. Due to measuring off of a pdf to get values for offsets, it is deemed that if there is an
additional 6” clear on top of the dynamic envelope there is a reasonable level of confidence
that there will be no interference between the envelope and the object in question. All
instances where the envelope is within 6” of the object a recommendation will be made to
survey and confirm the offset.
2. Inekon Vehicle static envelope – 1230mm – from document “Trio Type 12 SEA-II”
3. CAF Vehicle Static Envelope – 1225 mm – “City of Seattle Center City Connector Streetcar
Vehicles – Horizontal Curve Negotiation”.
4. All Dynamic Envelopes for Inekon Vehicles obtained from excel spreadsheet “Inekon Calcs
for Track Spacing Memo” – Using Ryan’s conversion from mirrors to cameras
5. Used 2% Values from “Inekon Calcs Spreadsheet” to take worst case scenario
6. All Dynamic Envelopes for CAF obtained from – “City of Seattle Center City Connector
Streetcar Vehicles – Dynamic Envelope”
7. If the distance between curves was greater than 12’ not necessary to check. Vehicles have
the largest clearance at radius 65.62’. The clearance for inswing from Inekon would be 5.81’
and the clearance for outswing from CAF would be 5.75’. Adding these together equals
11.56’. This would be worst case scenario so any distance between curves over this survey is
not recommended.
8. It is recommended that all of the platforms be surveyed as a check to confirm that the
offsets measured from the PDFs are indeed accurate to those in the field even if the
individual item does not recommend survey at that location. The offset here is more crucial
given the requirements of ADA.
Platform 80+00 – South Lake Union Streetcar

Actual Clearances: 4’ – 2” of clearance between the track centerline and the edge of platform.

Assumptions: Vehicle width from centerline to edge of the vehicle for Inekon is 4’- ½” [1230mm].
Vehicle width from centerline to the edge of the vehicle for CAF is 4’- ¼” [1225mm]. (This does not
include cameras or mirrors because not applicable for platform clearances.) Maximum space between
platform and streetcar to meet ADA standards is 3” (76.2mm).

Necessary Clearances: For all platforms need to be between 4’- ½’ and 4’ – 3 ¼”.

4’ – 3 ¼” = 4’ – ¼” + 3”

4’ – ½” =minimum distance to ensure no collisions with the platform and both vehicle types.

Conclusions: 4’ – 2”, the clearance at this platform, is within the 4’- ½’ and 4’ – 3 ¼” range meeting
clearance requirements and ADA requirements. Survey not recommended in this location.
