West flood canal is a canal in

Jakarta, which is one way of tacking
the floods in Jakarta. The core aspect
of canal flooding is controlling the
flow of water from the upstream river
by regulating the volum of water
entering the city of Jakarta and will
make the burden of the river in the
north more controlled. West flood
canal project from Ciliwung to the
north sea of Jakarta. On October 27,
2018, we conducted observations to
several western canal flood points to
the see the current conditions of the
western canal flooding. Namely in Rawa kepa, Tomang, and Pondok Bandung. Here is our
report.
When in flood canal Tomang, we interviewed a worker who worked as a pump
regulator, his name is Pa Dedy. Pa Dedy has worked as a pump regulator for 5 years. “The
pump is turning on when there are flood and more than 60 cm. The struggle in this canal is
stagnant trash, There are still so many people dump the trash into a river. The trash will make
the pump stuck and can’t pump the water. On area around kelurahan Jatipulo and kelurahan
Tomang used this pump to pumping the water. The pump is work normally but the problem is
only the trash.” Pa Dedy said.
When in flood canal Rawa Kepa, we also interviewed a worker worked as a pump
regulator, his name is Pa Suwardi. Pa Suwardi has worked as a pump regulator for 14 years.
“The pump is turning on when the height of water more than 30 cm, even when cloudy or
drizzle the pump have to turning on for pumping the water to big canal.” Pa Suwardi said.
People who lived around the river critize the pump because there are still frequent floods. But,
he asstered the main task of this pump is to control flood, not for freeing floods. He also said
there are 3 factors causes flooding. The first factor is local rainfall, shipments, and high tide
sea level, these are three factors but if garbage is not the main factor but only inhibits, it only
blocks the flow of water, if the flood factor These are three factors, the main factors of rainfall,
shipments from Bogor and high tides. if it’s already happen, it’s sure to flood. Pa Suwardi said
“My hope as a pump operator and residents of DKI is also at least flooded, the floods in DKI
are getting smaller and smaller, that’s all, if necessary, the flood is lost”.
One important thing is only the awarness of people around the river. People around
the river should know the importance dangerous of flooding and should know how to keep
clean. Because when some place dirty that will many bacterial and viruses. The Goverment
should do more effort to push people keep clean the environment together.
