ABSTRACT

The use of coco coir and rice hull as components of a filter media has been widely

studied. This study aimed to determine the effect of aluminum sulfate, coco coir and

carbonized rice hull as filter components in increasing the dissolved oxygen present in

the water.

Rice hull was carbonized using a can, about 25 cm in height and 20 cm in

diameter. The 1.5L plastic bottles were gathered and calibrated according to the thickness

of the filter media. The assembling of the filter media was done by using the top part of

the plastic bottle as container for each filter component and each container were affixed

to the other using a glue stick. This study used Regression and correlation analysis and

ANOVA for the analysis of data. The treatments in this study varies on the thickness of

coco coir and carbonized rice hull, 50mm coco coir and 60mm carbonized rice hull for

treatment 1, 60mm coco coir and 70mm carbonized rice hull for treatment 2 and 70 mm

coco coir and 80 mm carbonized rice hull for treatment 3.

With the results gathered, the study revealed a significant effect of the filter media

on increasing the dissolved oxygen present in water which is an indicator that organic

matter present in the water were decreased. The treatment that did the highest increase in

DO is the treatment 3 from 0.1 mg*s-1(wastewater) to 4.7 mg*s-1(filtered water from T3).
