Sussex Wildlife Trust Receives Major Grant
Sussex Wildlife Trust (SWT), the county’s leading conservation charity, has been awarded a generous grant by Arcadia of
$500,000 to be paid over five years.
The money will be used to support the Trust’s work promoting large-scale conservation projects so that wildlife can thrive in
larger, joined up areas of land. Arcadia has also awarded a similar size grant to Kent Wildlife Trust enabling both
organisations to collaborate on restoring wildlife and habitats on a landscape-scale across the South East.

Record fine for parks dog mess offender

Horticulture Week reports: A man who allowed his dog to defacate in a park without clearing up the mess has been hit with
the largest fine ever issued by Manchester magistrates under dog-control orders.

Go wild with more money for Community Wildlife

It's your chance to go really wild as Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) has teamed up with the Big Lottery Fund (BIG) to double
the money available to Scottish groups to improve and protect the natural environment through BIG's Community Wildlife
funding scheme.
Launched in June this year BIG's Community Wildlife programme had a budget of £250,000 to distribute in Scotland making
grants of £300 to £10,000 to allow community groups to discover, enjoy or protect the local wildlife in their area. Now SNH
has invested a further £250,000 to enable communities across Scotland an even greater chance to celebrate local
biodiversity.

Marsh harriers breed for the first time in Cheshire - Cheshire Wildlife Trust
The marsh harrier – a stunning bird of prey rarer than the golden eagle, has bred in Cheshire for the first time, within
Cheshire Wildlife Trust’s first Living Landscape project area.

Forty years of the Garden Bird Feeding Survey: Feeling blue - BTO
Perhaps our most iconic garden bird, the Blue Tit, is a surprise addition to our list of declining garden visitors. This colourful
acrobat fell from an average weekly count of 5.3 individuals per Garden Bird Feeding Survey (GBFS) garden in the winter of
1970/71 to 3.1 individuals last winter – a downturn of 42%. Fascinatingly, and importantly, this decline appears to have been
limited to gardens since the size of the overall Blue Tit population in the UK has increased over the past 40 years
Starlings, Song Thrushes and House Sparrows numbers have all fallen over the years by 70% or greater whilst Goldfinch
numbers increased as did Long Tailed Tits and woodpigeons.

Ecotherapy: Go wild, stay well, reported by The Ecologist

The ecologist reports on the Ecominds project run by Mind
An average one in four people in the UK will suffer a mental health problem at some point. New research, and a pioneering
therapy project, are proving that nature and the wild outdoors have the power to heal and should be included within a mix of
treatments

Make Your Nature Count, results from 2010 now in. - RSPB
Gardens are fantastic habitats for wildlife, as this year’s Make Your Nature Count results show. The results come from over
69,000 gardens in the UK and were recorded by 92,000 people. Wow!

Forestry Commission records Cumbrian red squirrel reserve numbers

The Forestry Commission has carried out the first ever full survey of the Red Squirrels Reserve at Whinlatter Forest, Dodd
Wood, Wythop and Setmurthy near Keswick as part of efforts to help conservation.
Numbers of red squirrels were counted using 75 traps located within the reserve.
One trap was placed per hectare within the reserve and recordings were made twice a day for two weeks. The red squirrels
would be released and the traps would be moved to different locations until around 600 hectares of Forestry Commission
land in the reserve had been surveyed.

Some 177 quangos 'to be scrapped' by the government – BBC News and Telegraph
Some 177 quangos, or taxpayer-funded public bodies, could be scrapped by the government, a leaked document suggests.
The Daily Telegraph says it shows the Health Protection Agency and the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority are
two due to be abolished.
A further four bodies are said to be facing privatisation, with an additional 129 set to be merged.
The Cabinet Office said the leak was "irresponsible" and it regretted extra uncertainty for employees it caused.
The Telegraph listed the 177 quangos due to be abolished, and said an additional 94 remained under threat of being
scrapped in the future.
Environment Agency, Forestry Commission, Natural England and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew are all on the under review
list. The nine National Park Authorities are on the list 'to be retained' along with the Broads Authority, however, British
Waterways and Council for Rural Communities are on the list to be abolished.

Year of the Bat takes flight – Bat Conservation Trust

Launching in Prague today the Year of Bat 2011-2012 will celebrate the world’s only flying mammals and promote
conservation, research and education.
The Bat Conservation Trust is partnering on this joint campaign, led by the UN’s Convention on the Conservation of Migratory
Species of Wild Animals (CMS) and the Agreement on the Conservation of Populations of European Bats (EUROBATS).
The campaign will focus on the ecological benefits that bats provide, such as pest control and seed dispersal and draw
attention to the world’s 1100 bat species – around half of which are currently at risk.

Beaver match-makers hope for loch-side love – Scottish Wildlife Trust

The Scottish Beaver Trial team has released a new male beaver to partner a lone female as part of the five-year trial
reintroduction of beavers to Knapdale Forest in Mid-Argyll. The male, who was captured in Norway by colleagues at
Telemark University College, brings the number of resident wild beavers in Scotland to 12 (including two recently born kits).

WWT aerial research secures new SPAs for waterbirds

Ground-breaking aerial research conducted by WWT has helped to secure two new EU Special Protection Areas (SPAs) in
Liverpool Bay and the Outer Thames Estuary by demonstrating how important these areas are for red-throated divers and
common scoters.
The new marine SPAs which, between them, span more than half a million hectares, have been added to the previously
designated Carmarthen Bay in Wales, which was also granted protected status following findings published by WWT.
